ABB has been contracted by machine supplier Voith to deliver drives and electrification to support the build of SCA’s new kraftliner machine PM2 at its Obbola mill in Umeå, Sweden.

Valmet will offer recovery boiler upgrade service to Lee & Man Pulp Manufacturing Limited’s Chongqing mill in China. The project is scheduled to be finished in the second quarter of 2022.

CTI Paper USA announced a new partnership agreement with Milan-based Gruppo Cordenons to supply and serve merchants, converters and brand managers in the U.S. and Canada. The partnership takes effect September 1.

Market Roundup
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released its July 2021 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments increased five percent in July compared to July 2020.

Pulp & Paper
Valmet has received several pulp technology orders from Nine Dragons for their pulp, paper and board greenfield project in Beihai city, Guangxi autonomous region, in China. The order consists of two complete fiberlines, two bleached chemi thermo mechanical pulp (BCTMP) lines, a recovery boiler and DeNOx scrubbers. The deliveries will be done in phases and the start-ups are scheduled for 2023.

Pitkyaranta pulp mill, one of Russia’s largest pulp and paper mills, based in Karelia will significantly increase its output this year, due to the conducted modernization.

Toscotec will supply an AHEAD 2.2L tissue line on a turnkey basis to Vajda Papír at its Dunaföldvár mill, near Budapest, Hungary. The start-up is planned for the first half of 2022.

Containerboard/Packaging
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released its July 2021 Packaging Papers & Specialty Packaging Monthly report. According to the report, total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments in July decreased one percent compared to July 2020.

Thimm has further developed its corrugated cardboard plant in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate with a comprehensive expansion of the corrugator and the installation of a new conveyor system. This investment in Alzey means that F-flute can now be produced for the first time at a German Thimm site.

Fiskeby Board has agreed to acquire Baden Board GmbH, based in Gernsbach, Germany. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Legislative
Oregon will overhaul components of its recycling system and will make packaging producers partially responsible for funding recycling of their products. It’s the second U.S. state to approve such a law.

Global consumption of tissue paper products is expected to grow at roughly 6.5 percent each year in the next five years to reach 52 million tons, according to market research provider RISI. Global production should reach levels of 44 million tons in this year alone — an increase of ten million tons compared to ten years ago.

Developing bio-based chemicals, polymers and products in a sustainable manner allows for substantial new business opportunities.

Case Paper announced the completion of a massive solar panel installation on the roof of their converting and warehouse facility in Chicago, Illinois.

China is currently the largest paper and paperboard consumer in the world. A wide collaboration is needed to promote the use of sustainable tissue and copy papers in the Chinese offices.

Norske Skog announced that Per Ivar Berg (58) has been appointed the new Managing Director at Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS, effective February 1, 2022. He will replace Kjell-Arve Kure, who will leave the company on September 1, 2021. Patrik Axelsson will act as Managing Director of Norske Skog Saugbrugs until Berg takes over.
