UPM has said that Conciliator Leo Suomaa has submitted a proposal for a settlement in the collective labour agreement negotiations between UPM Pulp and the Paperworkers' Union. The conciliator has asked the parties to state their position on the proposal by 14 April 2022 at 10:00 EET.

SCA said that it will invest SEK 150 million in new equipment for treating black liquor at its Munksun paper mill in Pileå, Sweden.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö continues to grow their partnership with Valmet in North America by purchasing a complete Valmet automation solution for their new glass fiber tissue line in Madisonville, Kentucky. The order includes Valmet’s distributed control system (Valmet DNA DCS) with the latest generation user interface, quality control system (Valmet IQ Quality Control System) and a web inspection system (Valmet IQ Web Inspection System).

WestRock Company, a global manufacturer of differentiated paper and packaging solutions, broke ground on a 285,000 square foot expansion at its consumer packaging facility in Claremont. The $47 million investment was bolstered by a performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund and is expected to create 50 new jobs by the end of next year.

There’s a new anti-paper campaign afoot in Hollywood. Called ScriptationNation, it’s a coalition of misinformed celebs who’ve joined with entertainment technology company Scriptation, the maker of a new digital script app, to get Hollywood to go paperless by 2030. The Hollywood Reporter recently reported on the coalition. Two Sides responded with a letter to the editor.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the February 2022 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments increased two percent in February compared to February 2021.

Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc. (NYSE:RYAM) (the “Company "), a global leader of high purity cellulose, announced today a cost surcharge of USD 146 (EUR 133) per metric ton applicable to all shipments of its cellulose specialties and viscose-grade products.

The Altri Group achieved, in 2021, a record in the production of cellulosic fibers, but also a growth in its sales, in a period marked by the high prices of pulp in international markets.

Norske Skog announced that its Bruck paper mill in Styria, Austria, will gradually resume production as energy markets have stabilised to some extent and commercial terms reflecting the current energy situation have been entered into with customers.

Georgia-Pacific has announced that it plans to close its tissue mill on Day Street in Green Bay, Wisconsin over the next 18 months.

Peak Renewables Ltd. announced that they have acquired the Chetwynd Pulp Mill previously owned and operated by Paper Excellence.

Containerboard/Packaging
The PM10 at Laakirchen Papier AG, part of the Heinzel Group, Austria, that was rebuilt by ANDRITZ has become the world’s fastest converted containerboard production machine with speeds of up to 1,420 m/min at a basis weight ranging from 80 to 140 g/m².

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released its February 2022 Packaging Papers & Specialty Packaging Monthly report. According to the report, total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments in February decreased two percent compared to February 2021. They were down two percent when compared to the same two months of 2021.

New Products
AFT is supplying two POMix stock processors to Pratt Industries for the new PM18 board machine in Henderson, Kentucky. The POMix units will deliver uniform top- and bottom-ply stock distribution to the machine headbox.

Outlook Nebraska, manufacturer of nearly 40 tissue and towel products, prioritizes the increase of production capacity to meet customer demand. The addition of a Bretting Manufacturing bander and log saw to Outlook’s multi-fold towel machine will more than double its production capacity. The new equipment paves the way for sales growth and customer retention.

Kruger Products L.P. has entered into a charitable partnership with One Tree Planted Inc. to plant 100,000 trees throughout North America over the next three years, another example of Kruger Products' bold commitment to grow the company while still reducing its environmental footprint through its Reimagine 2030 sustainability initiative.
