Mondi Paper Bags has acquired the paper bag converting lines from National Bag and Egypt Sack, two subsidiaries of Lafarge Cement Egypt, a major cement producer in the country.

Weyerhaeuser Company announced an agreement to purchase 80,800 acres of high-quality timberlands in North and South Carolina from a fund managed by Campbell Global for approximately $265 million. The acquisition is comprised of highly productive timberlands situated in strong coastal markets and strategically located to deliver immediate synergies with existing Weyerhaeuser timber and mill operations.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the March 2022 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments increased one percent in March compared to March 2021, while U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers increased three percent in March compared to the same month last year.

Pulp & Paper
Toscotec will rebuild the forming and press sections of PM1 at Cartonificio Sandreschi’s paper mill in Villa Basilica, Italy. Cartonificio Sandreschi had previously installed on PM1 several custom-made TT SteelDryers of 2,000 mm diameter to replace its existing cast iron cans.

Valmet will supply a sizing section rebuild to Productora Nacional de Papel in Mexico. In the project, the board machine 1 (BM 1) will be upgraded to improve strength properties and add new coated white-top testliner grades (WTL) to the machine's product portfolio. The start-up of the rebuilt machine is scheduled to take place by the end of 2023.

Containerboard/Packaging
Saica Group has started its production of corrugated packaging in its new plant in Hamilton, Ohio. The Hamilton facility is Saica's first U.S. corrugated plant — a newly-built 360,000 square-foot facility that includes manufacturing, converting and production areas, along with a warehouse and office space.

Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL Group) said that it is investing IDR33.4 trillion (approx. US$70 million) in the construction of a new paper mill in Indonesia.

Cardboard mono-packaging is perfect for a circular economy as it can be fully recycled in the waste paper cycle. However, if cardboard is coated with a polyethylene (PE) barrier layer, its recyclability is reduced.

Georgia-Pacific has officially opened new facilities in McDonough, Georgia and Jonestown, Pennsylvania to produce recyclable paper padded mailers. When combined with the recently added manufacturing capacity of a third production line at the company's Phoenix-area plant, Georgia-Pacific has expanded its recyclable mailer production by 350% to help meet growing demand for more sustainable e-commerce packaging options.

Sustainability
Veolia launches the world's largest biorefinery project producing CO2-neutral bio-methanol from a pulp mill, located in Finland. The project allows to unlock the potential of this alternative source of feedstock for biofuel that is almost completely unexplored to date.
