The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a Georgia plant turning wood residue into jet fuel is receiving a big chunk of new federal funding to boost production, in the hopes that its products can eventually lower the climate change impact of the airline industry and other sectors.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its Q4 2022 Boxboard report.

Packaging Corporation of America reported fourth quarter 2022 net income of $212 million, or $2.31 per share, and net income of $215 million, or $2.35 per share, excluding special items. Fourth quarter net sales were $1.98 billion in 2022 and $2.04 billion in 2021.

Pulp & Paper
Italian carton board manufacturer Cartiera Pirinoli selected Toscotec for the rebuild of the entire press section of PM1 at its Roccavione site in Northern Italy. The project is planned for the second half of 2023.

Valmet will supply an extensive rebuild for Sappi’s Somerset paper manufacturing facility in Skowhegan, Maine, USA. Previously, Valmet rebuilt the paper machine 1 (PM1) and with its success, Sappi has chosen Valmet again to rebuild the paper machine 2 (PM2).

Arauco on January 20 produced the first bale of eucalyptus kraft pulp by the new production line (Line 3) at Arauco Mill in southern Chile. The construction of the new production line is part of Arauco's MAPA Project, which also includes major improvements to Line 2 and the closure of Line 1 — the last pulp bale of Line 1 was produced on January 3, 2022.

Norske Skog announced that its newsprint mill in Skogn, Norway, will invest around NOK 180 million (USD 18.2 million) — after NOK 40-50 million in grant funding from the NOx fund — in a new thermomechanical pulp production line (TMP) that will replace expensive recycled paper with fresh fibre.

As part of UPM’s water biodiversity work, the company has adopted a new stream water programme that aims to release or restore 500 km of stream waters by 2030. The migratory fish programme launched by UPM in 2016 will be integrated into the stream water programme.

Sofidel, one of the world’s leading paper groups for the production of paper for hygienic and domestic use known particularly in Italy and Europe for its Regina brand, has again this year received Platinum recognition from EcoVadis for its approach to sustainability and therefore confirming its place among the top 1% of companies in its sector worldwide.

Smurfit Kappa has announced a €6 million investment at its Sanguesa paper mill in Spain, which will see the construction and installation of up to 12,000 solar panels on land adjacent to the mill. The solar panels will reduce CO2 emissions by over 3200 metric tons annually and provide significant cost savings.

International Paper’s Rome Mill has announced that regional communications manager Jenna Guzman has been promoted to the IP headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, and welcomes Kelly Trumbo as the new communications manager for the containerboard mill.
