Solenis has completed its previously announced acquisition of the paper process chemicals business of Kolb Distribution Ltd. (“Kolb”), a unit of KLK Kolb Group. The deal also includes a long-term supply agreement, in which the KLK Kolb Group will manufacture paper process chemicals exclusively for Solenis.

PulPac announces its first licensee in Japan, expanding Dry Molded Fiber production to Asia. Nippon Molding Co Ltd has ordered its first PulPac Modula from PulPac machine partner TechTribe and aims for a speedy market launch to supply the growing Japanese sustainability market with Dry Molded Fiber products, starting with coffee lids and food trays.

BiOrigin Specialty Products started up PM2 at its Menominee site in Michigan after the successful completion of a wet section rebuild supplied by Toscotec on a turnkey basis. PM2 is a MG (Machine Glazed) machine producing specialty papers including MG grades and flexible packaging products.

Domtar announced that it has entered into an agreement with First Quality Enterprises whereby First Quality will acquire Domtar's Dryden pulp mill in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. The purchase price was not disclosed.

tesa has released its tesa 51344 paper-based tear tape for shipping envelopes and boxes, which aims to improve the recyclability of board and paper waste by negating the need to separate adhesive tapes.

Woamy is a spin-off of Aalto University, Finland, supported by CMPC. It has raised one million euros to develop a recyclable and biodegradable bio-based foam to serve as an alternative to expanded polystyrene plastic.

Packaging Digest reports that consumer demand for more sustainable packaging continues to push the limits of packaging innovation. One of the latest developments comes in the form of a new solution for single-use detergent packs.

Sustainability
Heinzel Group announces the conversion of an idled paper machine at the Steyrermühl mill in Austria for the production of sustainable kraft papers for flexible packaging. Heinzel will take over the Steyrermühl site from UPM on January 1st, 2024, according to an agreement signed in 2022, and will enter the market with a new range of unbleached and bleached kraft papers shortly thereafter.

Kemira and Metsä Group have agreed to jointly develop a new sustainable product or raw material related to the forest industry by 2027. As major industrial players, the two companies are well-positioned to reduce the environmental impacts of the forest industry value chain.
