Voith delivered effective commissioning trainings for the November 2022 start-up of the world’s largest kraftliner machine, SCA’s PM 2 in Obbola, Sweden. Thanks to Voith's PapermakingAcademy and comprehensive documentation, the SCA team was optimally prepared for operation of its new state-of-the-art facility.

Valmet will supply consistency measurements to Norske Skog's Golbey mill in France. The new measurements will be implemented in the new stock preparation unit and replace the aged ones from Golbey's PM 1, which is currently being converted from the production of newsprint to the production of recycled containerboard.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, will initiate change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs for its paperboard and BCTMP (bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp) mills in Finland. The negotiations involve a total of 1,100 employees at the Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele and Äänekoski mills.

Tex Year Group recently established a new factory in Poland in a joint venture with Minima Technology, Taiwan's largest compostable tableware and food packaging manufacturer. It will be the 9th factory of Tex Year's worldwide deployment.

The Fedrigoni Group, one of the world’s leading players in premium labels and self-adhesive materials, specialty papers for luxury packaging and other creative solutions, closed 2022 by exceeding the EUR 2 billion proforma turnover threshold: 2.21 billion compared to 1.6 in 2021 (+37%), distributed between Italy (504 million, +44%), the rest of Europe (1,054 million, +36%) and the rest of the world (653 million, +31%), with a proforma Ebitda of 3401 million (+54% compared to 2021) and investments of approximately 80 million (over 60 in 2021).

Pulp & Paper
Toscotec will supply two TT SYD MG Steel Yankee Dryers for Machine Glazed paper to the Indian paper manufacturer Chandpur Enterprises Ltd. at their paper manufacturing facility near New Delhi in Uttar Pradesh. The MG dryers will replace the two local steel cylinders installed on their PM1 and PM2 that produce MG Paper in the basis weight range from 40 to 70 gsm. The start-up of the two dryers is scheduled for mid-2024.

SCA inaugurated its new pulp mill at its Ortviken industrial site in Sundsvall, Sweden. Berit Högman, Governor of Västernorrland County, gave a ceremonial speech, while Swedish professional woodchopper and logging sportsman Ferry Svan performed a "ribbon cutting" by sawing through a log.

Cascades has announced the permanent shutdown of paper machine number 2 at its Niagara Falls, New York mill, which had been temporarily shut down since November 2022.

Liansheng Pulp & Paper (Zhangzhou) Co., Ltd. has successfully started up two ANDRITZ tissue machines including stock preparation and automation systems at its mill in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, China.

Containerboard/Packaging
Two warehouses with a total footprint of almost 700,000 square feet, both owned by The Kraft Group, opened for business on Shrewsbury Street on Thursday.

Norske Skog Bruck announces successful commercial orders of the containerboard grades Testliner 3 and Fluting. This represents the introduction of 210,000 metric tons of competitive containerboard capacity to meet the growing demand for renewable and re-usable packaging. The production is based 100% on recycled fibre and will use steam from the waste-to-energy plant, which opened in April 2022.

Trinseo (NYSE: TSE) and RWDC Industries LLC announced a partnership to further the development of sustainably advantaged paper and board packaging solutions by bringing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) dispersion technology to target markets.

Based on many years of experience in cleaner technology, Voith introduces the AdaptClean rebuild kit, the latest optimization option within its BlueLine product range. The AdaptClean technology enables a quick and easy conversion of existing low consistency cleaners from a diameter of 105 mm.

Sustainability
The leading full-line supplier Voith, in collaboration with its customer Visy, a global packaging and resource recovery company, held a two-day workshop on decarbonization in papermaking last week in Melbourne. This event was supported by Appita, the leading Australasian pulp and paper technical association.
