The hygiene and health company Essity divests its operations in Russia. Essity has signed an agreement with a buyer and the transaction has now been approved by the Russian authorities. The transaction is expected to be finalized during the second quarter of 2023.

Suzano said it expects to reduce its production volume of market pulp by approximately 4% throughout the year when compared to its nominal production capacity and historical volumes.

Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) and the Government of Saskatchewan released their annual State of Trade report for Saskatchewan. The report notes that the total value of Saskatchewan exports to the world reached a record breaking $52.6 billion in 2022. This marks the highest figure ever recorded in the province's history and 42 per cent higher than the 2021 record of $37 billion.

Pulp & Paper
Valmet will supply a Valmet IQ Web Inspection System for pulp dirt count to Ahlstrom's Aspa mill in Sweden. The dirt measurement will cover the full width of production.

DS Smith, a leading global manufacturer of sustainable containerboard and specialty papers, has commissioned Voith to rebuild its PM 4 at the company’s Viana site in Northern Portugal. Producing around of 400,000 tons of kraftliner and high-performance top kraftliner per year, the mill is a market leader in Southern Europe.

Stora Enso has completed the negotiations concerning the consolidation of its book paper production and the permanent closure of one of the two paper machines at the Anjalankoski site in Finland. The closure will take place during the fourth quarter of 2023.

Containerboard/Packaging
The Cartogal packaging plant located in the town of A Pobra do Caramiñal, in Galicia, Spain, will soon see an increase in size, production and storage capacity after a milestone investment of 11.35 million euros, according to DS Smith.

Recycling Today reports that during a typical global recession, all areas of the economy, such as manufacturing, services, retail, construction and trade, tend to have a downward turn at the same time; but, according to a June 5 report from Jeffrey Kleintop, managing director and chief global investment strategist at Charles Schwab & Co., only manufacturing and trade seem to be in a global recession.

Valmet has developed Valmet Brown Stock Analyzer to complement its online pulp quality analyzer family. The analyzer provides high analysis frequency for digester and brown stock washing control in kraft pulping. It is the most robust Kappa measurement for high yield and brown pulp, designed to measure the coarsest pulp starting from cooking blow line.

UPM announced that Petri Hakanen has been appointed Senior Vice President Technology (CTO), effective 1 August 2023. In his new role, Hakanen will report to Winfried Schaur, Executive Vice President, UPM Biorefining & Technology and lead the company's research & development, new business development as well as the investment management going forward.
