The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the 63rd Paper Industry Capacity and Fiber Consumption Survey. The report provides detailed data on U.S. paper industry capacity and production compiled by AF&PA’s statistics team.

Market Roundup
Billerud expects the EBITDA for the 2023 second quarter to be SEK 100-200 million. The lower result is mainly due to significantly lower sales volume and revaluation of finished goods inventory. Billerud also announces a raised ambition for its efficiency program and a changed financial reporting structure.

Pulp & Paper
Valmet has received an order for a new recovery boiler and an upgrade of the existing evaporation system for DS Smith Viana pulp and paper mill in Portugal. The delivery projects are scheduled to start up during the first half of 2025.

Norske Skog announced that the newly converted paper machine, PM 3, at Bruck Mill in Styria, Austria, is now producing Strato Testliner and Fluting.

Bracell announced the start of civil works for the largest tissue mill in Latin America. The unit is being built next to Bracell's pulp mill in Lencois Paulista (SP).

The industrial site in Alizay, acquired in June 2022, has been converted by VPK into a sustainable development hub for circular economy. The group invested 200 million euros in the site to convert the existing paper machine into a recycled paper production unit based on carbon-free energy. The site strengthens VPK's position in the French and European markets through higher vertical integration.

Staffordshire-based designer and manufacturer of corrugated packaging, Cardway Cartons Ltd, has boosted production capacity and expanded its offering with the installation of the BOBST EXPERTFOLD 165 at its 55,000 sq ft Alsager facility.

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has partnered with Syntegon, a manufacturer of process and packaging machinery, to develop a recyclable paper packaging solution using recycled fibres for dried foods such as flour, sugar and pasta.

Celebration Packaging has introduced a new range of double-wall hot drink cups made from sustainable bamboo fibre, under its long-established EnviroWare brand.

The Voith Group achieved significant gains in the first six months (October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023) of the current fiscal year 2022/23 despite a market environment that continues to be challenging. Voith increased both its sales and EBIT in all Group Divisions.

As part of Sappi Europe's full scale decarbonisation roadmap, Gratkorn mill in Graz, Austria, is expanding the share of biomass to be used as an energy source, further driving the move away from fossil fuels as part of the mill's contribution to the European roadmap.

Metsä Tissue announced that it will become a shareholder of "Modellfabrik Papier in Düren," in Germany, effective July 1, 2023. Founded in 2020, Modellfabrik is a society for research and development for sustainable paper technologies.

Progroup’s PM2 paper mill has again been awarded the European Union’s EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) certificate. This once again certifies that the company makes an effective contribution to protecting the environment that far exceeds what is required by law.

Brandon Hall has been the new Director Consumer at Optima subsidiary Optima Machinery Corporation in Green Bay, WI since mid-June. Optima is thus strengthening its sales of filling and packaging equipment for the consumer goods market in North America and taking account of the positive growth in the Consumer business unit.
