Saica has selected the leading full-line supplier Voith to install the OnEfficiency.Strength digital solution. The innovative package for saving starch and consequently reduce CO2 emissions will be used at PM 10 at the El Burgo de Ebro site (Spain) as well as the PM 70 at Nogent-sur-Seine site (France).

The Fedrigoni Group is setting up a 3,000 square metre "Innovation Centre" next to its Verona office in Italy. The investment, which will include a share of public funding through NRRP funds, will be fully operational in the first quarter of 2024.

Metsä Fibre said construction of its Kemi bioproduct mill is progressing on schedule. Mill test run and trials are currently underway, as is installation work.

Pulp & Paper
Italian specialty paper manufacturer Cartiere di Guarcino has started up PM2 at its Guarcino paper mill after a successful rebuild of the forming and press sections supplied by Toscotec. PM2 produces high-quality decor specialty papers.

In mid-June, PM 16 from Chinese paper manufacturer Huawon successfully started up at the Ma'anshan site, Anhui Province, with leading solutions from Voith. With the PM 16, Huawon will produce high-quality, environmentally friendly décor base paper and thus strengthen its market position at home and abroad.

International technology group ANDRITZ has received an order from Mpact Operations (Pty) Ltd. (“Mpact”) to upgrade a pulping line at its Mkhondo Paper Mill in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

UPM has decided to close 485,000 metric tons of graphic paper capacity in Europe. The company permanently closes paper machine 6 at UPM Schongau, Germany, and paper machine 4 at UPM Steyrermühl, Austria. The decision is based on the plans announced in June 2022 and in March 2023.

Pratt Industries officially opened its new $253 million advanced manufacturing box factory in Cedar Hill, Texas, on June 26. At capacity, the 1.1 million square foot plant — one of the largest and most modern of the company's 71 factories spread across 25 US states — will provide 375 full-time, high-paying, green-collar manufacturing jobs. That brings Pratt's total workforce to 11,500.

Avery Dennison, has today introduced four labeling papers made from recycled pulp and alternative fibers aimed at the premium packaging segment including wine and spirits, craft beverages, gourmet food, beauty and fragrances.

Sustainability
Walki Group, through its startup investment initiative Walki Ventures, has invested in Finnish start-up The Paper Lid Company ('TPLC'). TPLC's sustainable paper lid manufacturing site in Masku, Finland, is ready for scaling up production volumes supported by Walki's material conversion and printing capabilities.

Progroup is constructing a new waste-to-energy plant at this site. But more than that: “Strictly speaking, what we are building here is not just a single power plant,” says Maximilian Heindl, Progroup’s Chief Executive Officer, in his opening speech to mark the laying of the foundation stone. “We’re implementing an integrated circular economy concept.”

Sappi Gratkorns goal was to reduce their steam consumption and therefore reduce their annual cost of lowering their environmental impact. In the year 2021, Sappi Gratkorn entered into a sustainability partnership with Heat Management to investigate ways of furthering their eco-effective journey.

Marcus Åsgärde will be the new President of the Södra Wood business area. He most recently served as manager of a sales and operational planning project at Södra, prior Mill Manager of Södra Cell Värö (2020 to 2023) and has extensive experience from several roles and business areas at Södra, including Mill Manager of Södra Wood Värö.

Avery Dennison Corporation announced the promotion of Roberto Martinez Porta to Vice President Sales of Labels and Packaging Materials as part of Materials Group EMENA. He replaces Burak Sahbaz, who has been promoted to VP and General Manager of the Reflective Solutions Division.
