Pulp & Paper
Toscotec will supply a technological upgrade of Paper Prime’s PM1 at their Vila Velha de Rodão mill in Portugal. Planned for mid-2024, the project aims to achieve substantial energy savings and production increase.

Metsä Tissue announced that it has chosen Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire as the site for its planned new state-of-the-art tissue paper mill in the UK.

West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. and Atlas Holdings today announced the signing of a definitive agreement for the sale of West Fraser's Quesnel River Pulp mill in Quesnel, British Columbia and its Slave Lake Pulp mill in Slave Lake, Alberta to Atlas.

The development programme for Metsä Board's white kraftliner mill in Kemi has been completed in parallel with Metsä Fibre's new bioproduct mill. Metsä Board and Metsä Fibre are part of Metsä Group. In addition to increasing the mill’s capacity by 40,000 metric tons per year, the development programme will reduce the mill's energy consumption by 5% and water consumption by around 40% per tonne produced.

DS Smith and Coca-Cola HBC Austria have collaborated to replace plastic handles for 1.5 litre PET soft drink multi-packs with cardboard-based outer packaging.

Prinzhorn Group's Hamburger Containerboard is expanding its existing power plant in Spremberg, Germany, to include a second combustion line producing greater efficiency in steam and electrical energy generation. The project will replace externally produced steam based on lignite and will be a significant step towards energy self-sufficiency.

UPM Specialty Papers now offers a compostable solution for paper-based food stickers. UPM LabelCoatTM and UPM LabelCoatTM Prime label face papers are certified as both industrially and home compostable, helping customers and brand owners meet EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation proposal (PPWR) requirements.

Sustainability
Metsä Fibre’s Kemi bioproduct mill in Finland was successfully started up. The material, environmental and energy efficient mill will not use any fossil fuels, and it will produce two terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable electricity per year. Valmet’s technology and automation contribute to sustainable operation and high-quality end-product.
