In a strategic measure to strengthen its competitive position, LEIPA plans to concentrate the production of graphic papers on the technologically more advanced PM4 paper machine and discontinue operation of the older PM1. This decision is part of a comprehensive approach to site optimization, which is also being pursued in Schrobenhausen, albeit with investment volumes adapted to the current market environment.

Price negotiations for brown recycled corrugated case material on the German market entered into the final stretch at the end of February. Although certain corrugated board manufacturers were determined to resist price hikes in light of the weak demand situation, it was becoming apparent in the first week of March that the majority of contracts contained mark-ups, sometimes with small delays in implementation.

Five new 100 percent-recycled containerboard mills are boosting efforts in the United States to reuse old corrugated containers (OCC). OCC prices have eclipsed the 10-year average and could remain elevated as new mills ramp up production and increase demand for the raw material.

Aldi is launching the UK’s first supermarket own-brand paper wine bottles. Using Frugalpac’s Frugal Bottles, which are made from 94% recycled paperboard with a food-grade pouch to contain the wine, the new bottles are fully recyclable and five times lighter than a standard glass bottle. They will be in stores from 18th March – Global Recycling Day.

In partnership with DB Cargo, the first deliveries of wood have now been made to Leuna by rail, establishing and testing the direct rail link to the Leuna operations’ wood yard.
