Saudi Arabia’s Middle East Paper Company (MEPCO) has commissioned full-line supplier Voith with the construction of an entire production line for recycled containerboard at its Jeddah mill. The state-of-the-art and highly efficient line will achieve an annual production volume of up to 450,000 tons of high-quality Testliner and Corrugated Medium in the basis weight range of 70 to 140 gsm.

The BC Council of Forest Industries' (COFI) President and CEO, Linda Coady, made the following statement in response to ongoing mill closures and curtailments in British Columbia, Canada:

Canfor Pulp Products announced that it will indefinitely curtail one production line at its Northwood facility in Prince George, British Columbia due to the decline in availability of economic fibre in the northern BC region. The curtailment will result in the reduction of approximately 300,000 metric tons of market kraft pulp annually.

Supremex, a North American manufacturer and marketer of envelopes and a growing provider of paper-based packaging solutions, on May 1 announced the acquisition of the assets of Forest Envelope Group. Founded over 40 years ago, Forest Envelope is a regional leader in specialty envelope manufacturing and lithography located in Bolingbrook, Illinois, in the Greater Chicago area.

Sappi reported second quarter fiscal 2024 results. Commenting on the group's results, Sappi Chief Executive Officer Steve Binnie said, "Within the context of subdued underlying market conditions due to the challenging macroeconomic environment I am pleased that the group delivered EBITDA of US$183 million, which was 10% above the prior year."

Mativ Holdings reported earnings results for the three months ended March 31, 2024. On November 30, 2023, Mativ completed the sale of its Engineered Papers business. Financial results for continuing operations exclude Engineered Papers in all periods.

ANDRITZ has become the market leader in systems for the removal of chlorides and potassium from the kraft recovery cycle, components which often reduce recovery boiler efficiency in terms of fouling or corrosion. Pulp giant Suzano recently started up an Ash ReCrystallization (ARC) chloride removal plant at its Aracruz unit in Brazil.

The PulpEye analyzer RedEye measures liquor properties online during the cooking process as well as in the chemical recovery cycle. MoRe Research, a subsidiary of RISE Sweden, has purchased a RedEye analyzer for continuous monitoring of the cooking process in the unique pilot digester. At the same time also PulpEye's new colour meter was installed.

The Irish Times reports that Smurfit Kappa said demand for its cardboard boxes grew in the first quarter, as the industry recovers from a brief downturn and the company presses ahead with its plans to merge with US rival WestRock to form a paper packaging giant with about $35 billion (€32.6bn) of annual sales.
