KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp., Northbrook, Ill., USA, this week announced that it will open a new corrugated manufacturing facility in Aurora, Ill. The 192,000 sq. ft. facility, located 40 miles west of the city of Chicago, will produce corrugated packaging and will also include a design lab and a technical center. The first phase of construction for the new facility will begin in March.

KapStone expects to invest approximately $8 to $10 million in the first phase. The Aurora location will enhance KapStone's sales coverage in the Midwest, particularly in Chicago and surrounding areas.

Matt Kaplan, KapStone's president, said that "we are excited to establish a corrugated manufacturing facility in the Chicago area, our home territory. We are very optimistic that KapStone will deliver a very high level of service and quality of corrugated products that will enable us to continue to grow our operations."

The site GM will be Katie Wilhelm who has an extensive career in the corrugated industry, predominantly in the Chicago area.

KapStone Paper and Packaging Corp. is a producer of unbleached kraft paper products, linerboard, and shipping containers. The company is the parent company of KapStone Kraft Paper Corp., which operates paper mills in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., North Charleston, S.C., and Cowpens, S.C., as well as 14 additional converting locations in the East.

Wausau Paper, Mosinee, Wis., USA, this week said that it commenced a process last year to identify strategic alternatives for its Paper Segment that will position the company to focus its management efforts on continuing the growth of its highly successful tissue business. In early 2012, Wausau exited its legacy Print & Color business and narrowed the focus of its Paper Segment to specialty products in the food, industrial, and tape markets. Since that time the company retained financial advisors to assist its board of directors in the evaluation of alternatives for the remainder of the Paper Segment.

Wausau recently began the startup phase of a $220 million tissue capacity investment at its Harrodsburg, Ky., site. The project will accelerate growth of its Tissue Segment and further establish its "green leadership" position in away-from-home tissue markets through improved product performance and the introduction of new-to-the-market premium recycled products.

China's demand for coated paper has grown at a fast pace in the past decade. In the next five years, both production and demand will continue to grow, according to a new report by Research and Markets, Dublin, Ireland, titled the Chinese Markets for Coated Paper. The new study examines China's economic trends, investment environment, industry development, supply and demand, industry capacity, industry structure marketing channels, and major industry participants.

China has experienced more than two decades of high economic growth, which has been stimulated by the consecutive increases of industrial output, consumer consumption, and capital investment, the report notes. China's GDP has been growing at 11% per annum.

National industrial output has been advancing at 10.3% annually and will continue to sustain a strong growth into the next decade. The fast-growing middle class is creating an enormous consumer society. As the fastest-growing economy in the world, the emerging market has attracted the attention of investors and corporations around the world for the past two decades.

To deepen the reform of state-owned enterprises is a long-term task and needs great efforts, the report continues. The reform of state-owned economy has witnessed rapid changes in both economic and social aspects. The introduction of foreign advanced technology and capitals will continue to be favored by the Chinese government and business community. New ways will be adopted to utilize foreign investment, including mergers, acquisition, and investment funds and securities investment. China will continue to improve its investment environment in the areas of legal system, intellectual property protection, foreign trade and investment regulation, infrastructure, and financial system.

With global demand for lumber declining in many regions during the summer and fall, log prices continued to trend downward throughout 2012, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly (WRQ), Seattle, Wash., USA. The Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) fell for the fifth consecutive quarter to $81.94/cubic meter. The Index was down only 1.1% from the 2Q/12, which was the smallest quarter-over-quarter decline since world prices started to fall in early 2011. In just 12 months, the GSPI Index has fallen 9.9%, with the biggest price reductions in Europe and Latin America. In North America, prices have been fairly flat for almost two years, according to WRQ.

The biggest log price declines in local currencies occurred in Sweden, Germany, and Poland because sawmills in those countries were running at lower operating rates. Lumber production in the Nordic countries has been lower this year than it was in both 2010 and 2011. During the first nine months of 2012, production was down 2% compared with the same period in 2011. The biggest decline occurred in Sweden during the second and third quarter. In September, production was as much as 15% below the production level the same month in 2011.

Sawlog prices in the Western U.S. have been surprisingly flat for more than a year but there are indications that the log market is changing. In early November, there was increased upward pressure on sawlogs prices from Chinese log buyers that were more active in this market than earlier in the year. Some log buyers were offering $10-$15/cubic meter more for export logs than they did last spring. This new development has not been popular with sawmills producing lumber for the U.S. domestic market. Some industry leaders have commented that they would not be able to pay the new higher prices for logs unless lumber prices increased, WRQ noted.

Softwood sawlog prices across the U.S. South were practically unchanged in the 3Q/12, and, for the most part, average prices have hovered around $60-$62/cubic meter for almost two years. Since log costs can account for up to 70% of the production costs for a sawmill, the continuing stability of log prices combined with the increases in lumber prices has improved profitability for many sawmills. This is good news indeed for sawmills that have gone through some economically tough times these past few years, WRQ pointed out.

Italian paper producer Burgo Group this week announced that it will close Italy's last newsprint mill in Mantua on January 14. According to a report by Euwid Pulp and Paper, Germany, the Group is set to quit newsprint production for good. Production at the Mantua mill, which has been halted several times in past months, reportedly will cease on February 9, affecting some 188 employees, Euwid notes.

Since the closure of the Cartiera Verde Romanello mill in February last year, Mantua has been the only facility producing newsprint in Italy. The mill runs one paper machine with an installed capacity of up to 160,000 metric tpy. The white and colored newsprint is offered in grammages ranging from 42 to 48.8 gsm, Euwid reports.

Clearwater Paper Corp., Spokane, Wash., USA, has published its initial Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report. Clearwater notes that the CSR will serve as a benchmark against which to measure its progress on several key metrics. The report pledges resource investments in strategies and projects that reduce the company's environmental footprint associated with water, air, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and energy.

"Sustainability has been part of our DNA for more than a century," said Linda Massman, president and CEO of Clearwater Paper. "This report formalizes our long-demonstrated commitment to doing business in a way that is good for people, good for the environment, and good for the future of the company."

Specifically, Clearwater Paper's CSR outlines the company's goals to reduce water consumption by 20%, energy consumption by 15%, manufacturing solid waste to landfills by 20%, and greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2017.

"Developing and issuing our first CSR gave us the opportunity to share information about our innovative historical projects as well as define future sustainability expectations," said Marv Lewallen, VP of environmental, energy, and sustainability. "Sharing future CSR's will be an exciting and constructive method in which to show progress against our goals and demonstrate our successes in all aspects of our sustainability efforts."

Most of Clearwater Paper's carbon emissions are related to consumption of purchased energy used to produce paper products at 15 manufacturing locations in the U.S. and Canada. The company produces consumer tissue, away-from-home tissue, parent roll tissue, machine glazed tissue, bleached paperboard, and pulp. It is a supplier of private label tissue to major retailers and wholesale distributors. This includes grocery, drug, mass merchants, and discount stores.

Fabrica De Papel San Francisco, Mexico, is preparing to start up its third Metso (Finland) tissue production line. It will be the world's first tissue line based on the Advantage NTT concept, which enables high bulk and softness properties at the same time as it provides energy savings compared with conventional or structured tissue grades, Metso notes.

"After operating two Metso Advantage DCT tissue machines with good experience, we are now prepared to take the next step for quality to produce tissue products with higher bulk and softness, aiming towards the top end products. The Advantage NTT concept will also bring us a higher production capacity compared with the dry crepe tissue concept," says Dario Palma y Meza Espinoza, director of operations, Fabrica De Papel San Francisco.

The project is proceeding according to plan and the new tissue production line will start up in Mexicali, Mexico, at the end of the second quarter.

Metso's scope of supply included a complete 2.6-meter-wide Advantage NTT tissue machine equipped with an OptiFlo II TIS headbox, a Metso yankee cylinder, an Advantage AirCap yankee hood, sheet control, tail threading equipment, an Advantage WetDust dust management system, and an Advantage SoftReel reel.

The new tissue line will add another 30,000 metric tpy of bathroom tissue, napkin, and towel grades to Fabrica De Papel San Francisco's existing production.

Fabrica De Papel San Francisco already operates two Advantage tissue machines at its Mexicali facility, one of which started up in 2006 and the other in 2009. The company's PM 4 set a then world speed record of 2,160 m/min in 2009 and its PM 5 achieved a record-breaking rapid startup in 2009, reaching a production speed of 2,100 m/min only 12 days after startup.

Fabrica De Papel San Francisco now operates four tissue production lines and converting facilities, delivering tissue products for the Mexican and U.S. markets.

Henan Hulijia Industrial Co., China, has ordered from PMP, Poland, a new Intelli-Tissue® 900 EcoEc line. The new machine, with a double-press configuration, a design speed of 1,200 m/min, and a reel trim of 2.85 meters, will produce virgin fiber-based tissue (52 metric tpd). While producing a premium quality final product, the new tissue machine is characterized by ultra-low media consumption figures. Intelli-Tissue® 900 EcoEc was introduced to the market in March of this year, during the PMP Open House in Changzhou, hosted by PMP Group and the Henan Association.

PMP's scope of supply includes the approach flow system and the entire tissue machine, including auxiliary systems such as lubrication, steam, and condensate, mechanical drive, and tissue machine controls. The line will be designed in Europe and manufactured both in China and Poland. Startup is scheduled for the end of this year.

The Ilim Group, Russia, reports that its Koryazhma mill set a new production record on December 31 when its annual output exceeded 1.1 million metric tons. The Koryazhma mill's production for 2012 reached 1,100,831 metric tons, breaking, the mill's previous production record set last year when its output exceeded 1 million metric tons.

By setting a new European record in 2012, Ilim's Koryazhma mill continued its status as the largest producer of pulp and paper products in Europe. Koryazhma is a town in the southeast of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia.

Metso, Finland, reports that it has concluded employee negotiations at its different businesses in Finland, and will reduce a total of 101 jobs. At the start of the negotiations, the reduction need was estimated to be a total of about 160 jobs.

In Automation, 80 jobs will be reduced, 51 of them permanently. At the start of the negotiations, the job reduction need was estimated to be about 120 jobs.

Employee negotiations concerning temporary lay-offs have been conducted in the units serving the pulp industry in Pori, and the temporary lay-offs affecting about 20 people will begin in February. The negotiations concerning potential temporary lay-offs continue in the Power units in Tampere. Additionally, Metso's HR Services unit will reduce six jobs around Finland and temporarily lay-off 18 during 2013.

Additionally, 15 jobs will be reduced at the Mining and Construction's Tampere foundry. According to the negotiation decision valid until September, temporary lay-offs can be implemented in crushing and screening equipment manufacturing and at the foundry only if the work situation so requires.

Metso's overall target of the employee negotiations is an annual savings of approximately EUR 8 million. The cost reductions are estimated to be realized in full during 2013.

Productos Familia SCA, the largest Colombian tissue paper manufacturer, has started up the new Voith Paper TM 7 at its Cajica mill in Columbia, where another Voith Paper machine has been successfully running since 2006. The new TM 7 machine is designed for a speed of 2,000 m/min, with a 3,460 mm paper width at the reel. It increases the mill's production of tissue paper to approximately 40,000 metric tpy.

Voith was responsible for the supply of the tissue machine with basic and detail engineering, dust extraction system, and high-performance hood from Voith Air Systems (designed for reduction of gas consumption). Voith also supplied the approach flow, vacuum system, complete automation—with MCS, DCS, and scanner (QCS), installation supervision, commissioning, and startup.

Productos Familia is a family owned company that is 50% owned by the Sweden-based SCA group. It is a leading supplier of tissue products in Columbia.

International Paper, Memphis, Tenn., USA, and Brazilian corrugated packaging producer Jari Celulose, Embalagens e Papel S.A., a Grupo Orsa company, have finalized the formation of Orsa International Paper Embalagens S.A. The new entity, in which IP will hold a 75% stake, includes three containerboard mills and four box plants, which make up Jari's former industrial packaging assets. Today's closing completes the transaction announced in October 2012.

"International Paper has been in Brazil for more than 50 years and we are excited about this partnership as a platform to enter the corrugated packaging business in this strategic region," said John Faraci, chairman and CEO. "This investment fits our strategy to grow our packaging business globally and allocate capital to opportunities that deliver returns well above our cost of capital."

The value of IP's investment is approximately $470 million.

IP employs some 70,000 people and is strategically located in more than 24 countries serving customers worldwide. The company's net sales for 2011 were $26 billion. Temple-Inland Inc., which was acquired in February 2012, had 2011 net sales of $4 billion.

International Paper, Memphis, Tenn., USA, reports that it has completed a license agreement with Smart Planet Technologies to explore the development of products using EarthCoatingTM, a mineralized barrier coating for paperboard products. The company's coated paperboard division plans to create a line of folding carton and cupstock products within their Everest® and Fortress® grade lines that would improve yield and reduce plastic use while offering the same barrier properties available today. Trial work and pilot testing are scheduled for this quarter.

The EarthCoating mineralized resins are innovative, high performance coatings that contain less plastic than traditional low-density polyethylene coatings. EarthCoating resins are heat-sealable and FDA-compliant for direct food contact.

The Newark Group, Cranford, N.J., USA, this week announced that Newark BCI (historically known as Book Covers Inc.) will now be known as Newark Custom Paperboard. The Newark Custom Paperboard division provides the U.S. and Canada with a large variety of laminated products, including hard-bound trade and educational books, loose-leaf file, puzzle, yearbook, photo-album, game, and other associated products.

SIG Combibloc, Brazil, reports that it has begun work on the second stage of a packaging expansion at its plant in Campo Largo, near Curitiba in Brazil's Paraná state. The company's first South American plant, the Campo Largo operation started up in 2011. The current expansion involves an investment of more than EUR 36 million (100 million Brazilian reais) and includes the installation of an extrusion line that will make it possible to laminate unprocessed packaging board for the aseptic carton packs from SIG Combibloc on-site.

The extrusion line will laminate the unprocessed packaging board for the carton packs with a polymer and aluminium coating. The inner polymer layers build a liquid barrier for the product, and the outer layer keeps moisture out. The "razor-thin" aluminum layer protects the food packaged in the carton pack from light, oxygen, and external odors. After the coating has been applied, the packaging material is printed, cut to size, stamped, and sealed.

According to Ricardo Rodriguez, director and GM South America at SIG Combibloc, the company had a 2012 growth rate of 60% over the previous year. "For this reason, we have stepped up a gear on the factory expansion works with a further investment of 100 million Brazilian reais. This means SIG Combibloc has now fully completed the project in the originally announced total amount of 270 million reais."

Brazil is South America's biggest market for long-life foods packaged in carton packs. According to estimates, sales of aseptic carton packs totaled more than 13 billion units in Brazil in 2012. Sales are forecast to continue increasing at a rate of 8% annually up to 2015.

SIG Combibloc, part of the New Zealand-based Rank Group, is one of the world's leading system suppliers of carton packaging and filling machines for beverages and food. In 2011 the company achieved a turnover of EUR 1,450 million. It has some 4,870 employees in 40 countries.

Cascades Tissue Group, Candiac, Que., Canada, this week announced that the Cascades®Antibacterial paper towel is now available for purchase online at Office Depot. The offering makes Office Depot the first national retailer to sell the product, since its launch in the U.S. away-from-home market in October 2012. The Cascades Antibacterial paper towel minimizes hand contamination by killing more than 99.99% of harmful bacteria almost instantly, the company notes.

Since 80% of all infections are transmitted by hand, the lack of proper hand hygiene—namely inadequate hand washing and drying practices—continues to be a consistent, if not deadly, problem, Cascades Tissue explains. The green-colored Cascades Antibacterial paper towel can fit anywhere, doesn't require additional steps, and compensates for people's imperfect hygiene habits without changing the way they wash or dry their hands. When placed in contact with wet hands, the towel releases Benzalkonium Chloride. This active ingredient has been used safely in common products like gel sanitizers, baby wipes, and antiseptic skin solutions since 1935, but is unique to dry paper towels, according to Cascades.

Cascades performed several third-party laboratory tests to ensure the safety and efficacy on the Antibacterial Paper Towel. Microbiologists reported that the towel, when used after washing hands with soap and water, provides a more hygienic result than alcohol-based gels and other hand sanitizers, Cascades points out. While these other products kill bacteria and are useful when there is no water and soap available, they don't remove the organic matter (grease, dirt, blood, etc.) often found on hands, it adds. First cleared by Health Canada, Cascades' paper product now also complies with the regulation and policies of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Menges Roller Co., Wauconda, Ill., USA, has expanded its service offerings to converting companies, now providing precision cylindrical grinding services, as well as chrome plating, noting that the "two services go hand-in-hand." The company explains that chrome-plated rollers (after miles of web have passed over them) often see their chrome get dull or chipped. "Menges will now grind off that old chrome and apply new chrome plating to the roller, delivering a like-new finish," the company says.

For converters, a high-gloss finish on chromed rolls is imperative. Especially in situations where these rollers are in contact with hot plastics, if the chrome is dull, the plastic finish will appear dull and "un-glossy," Menges emphasizes.

The new re-grinding and re-chroming services being offered by Menges will help converters maintain their product quality – but they're also cost-effective repairs, the company continues. "Readers," it adds, "should realize that, most of the time, chromed rollers tend to be expensive chill rolls or heat-transfer rolls (double-shelled and liquid-filled). Replacing these rollers can be quite costly, so converting managers are usually happy to find they can be refinished for a fraction of the cost of replacement."

Few roller companies offer precision cylindrical grinding and re-chroming. However, Menges Roller has invested heavily in computer controlled outside diameter finishing machines that are capable of achieving diameter tolerances within one one-thousandth of an inch. For most converting operations, rollers must have very exact dimensions to function properly, Menges says.

Stora Enso, Helsinki, Finland, reports that its Barcelona Mill in Spain is bringing a new linerboard to market. The 230 gsm Ecoboard Plus can be used as the liner (surface) of e- or f-sized microflute board. Suitable end uses for packages made of this type of multi-layer board are numerous, ranging from bag-in-box wine packages to durable boxes for toys or different electric or electronic devices.

Ecoboard Plus is the fourth board brand from Barcelona Mill along with three Triplex brands that are available in a number of different grammages. It will be produced to serve especially the Southern and Western European market.

"Our new board has already been tested by a few customers, and the results are promising. Ecoboard Plus has a higher brightness and whiteness than other boards produced at Barcelona Mill, and it is a truly sustainable alternative for packaging. Market needs forced us to rethink and develop this high quality product, which complies with our mission to be an environmentally friendly board producer," said Juan Torras, sales director of Stora Enso for Spain and Portugal.

Caraustar Industries Inc., Atlanta, Ga., USA, this week announced a price increase of $25 per ton on all uncoated recycled paperboard grades. The increase becomes effective starting with shipments on February 15. The increase is in response to increasing costs, including raw materials, energy, transportation, labor, and benefits, the company noted.

Caraustar is one of North America's largest integrated producers of 100% recycled paperboard and converted paperboard products. The company serves the four principal recycled boxboard product end-use markets: tubes and cores, folding cartons, gypsum facing paper, and specialty paperboard products.

Sonoco, Hartsville, S.C., USA, also will raise the price for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) products by $25 per ton, effective for shipments in the U.S. and Canada beginning February 11. "This price increase is necessary to recover continued inflationary pressure from non-fiber-related costs, including chemicals, energy, freight, repair materials, labor, and other expenses," said Marty Pignone, VP, Primary Materials Group, North America. .

Sonoco is one of the largest producers of uncoated recycled paperboard in the U.S. and Canada, producing more than 1 million tons annually from 13 mills.

Darin Dodd has been appointed VP of commercial sales for Appleton Coated LLC, Combined Locks, Wis., USA. Dodd brings more than 20 years of paper sales and management experience to his role, including 17 years with Appleton Coated. During his time with the company, he held key national sales and management roles. Prior to Appleton Coated, he was with Westvaco Corp.

"His experience and deep understanding of our commercial business and customers make him an excellent choice to lead the sales organization in this segment," said Sandra Van Ert, Appleton Coated's president and CEO.

He has previously held executive roles in industrial manufacturing companies, responsible for billion dollar supply chain organizations, and most recently served in the position of global VP of operations and supply chain management with Atkore International, a divestiture of Tyco International.

Prior to joining Atkore, Pinto was president and CEO at Clyde Union LLC, which supplies engineered industrial pump systems to the oil and gas, nuclear power, and water industries globally. In addition, he spent 20-plus years in progressive roles within Textron Inc., a multi-industry business serving the aerospace, automotive, financial, and industrial markets. His positions included VP and GM as well as VP of Integrated Supply Chain.

Careers, like life, cannot always be defined in black and white terms; rather there are always gray areas, as well as some very colorful ones. Just ask TAPPI member Tom Gencarelli who, just seven years into his career, says he learned very quickly after graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering that being professionally successful wasn't always as straightforward either and was often tied to developing strategic relationships.
 
It is his membership in TAPPI that Tom says enabled him to meet and network with individuals who were instrumental in rapidly progressing his career. "I really assumed that all technical industries were just about meeting product specifications," he said, "but relationships are still key to success and had I not formed the great relationships I have today with key members like Honghi Tran and Glenn Hanson, I do not think I would be in the position I am today." Glenn M. Lundin was a TAPPI member for 30 years, starting in 1979. He attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated in 1967 with a B.S. degree in Physics. He obtained his post graduate degree from the University of Southern California in 1971 before returning to Green Bay, Wis., where he worked as a senior pulp and chemical engineer for American Can Co. beginning in 1975.

From 1971-1975, Lundin worked for Procter & Gamble as pulp mill production supervisor. In 1990 he was appointed by Hymac Ltd. to be regional sales manager for it's central area before working for Royal Ten Cate. His wife Judith, to whom he was married for 44 years, said that he loved being a part of the paper business.

The International Mechanical Pulping Conference, sponsored by PI, TAPPI, PAPTAC, SPCI and PTF, will be held on June 3-5, 2014, in Helsinki, Finland.  IMPC 2014 is a major part of PulPaper, one of the world's most premier pulp and paper exhibitions, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of PI, the Paper Engineers' Association.

The Conference Program Committee invites you to submit papers on the following topics:
