Appleton Papers, Appleton, Wis., USA, has changed its name to Appvion Inc. The company notes that the new name reflects its heritage of innovation in applying chemistry to paper and microencapsulation as a means to create value for its customers.
Commenting on the name change, Chairman, President, and CEO Mark Richards said that "Charles Boyd founded our company 106 years ago today (May 13) with the belief that he could add value to paper by applying coatings to it. Since then, company employees have used their ingenuity and ability to adapt their expertise to new opportunities to prove that Mr. Boyd's idea was sound, profitable, and enduring.
"Our company's success has been based on using applied chemistry to increase the performance of paper. More recently, our expertise in microencapsulation has enabled us to partner with companies like Procter & Gamble to enhance the performance and value of a growing range of consumer and industrial products," Richards explained. He added that while producing thermal, carbonless, security, and other specialty coated papers will continue to be an important part of the company's product offering, adopting the name Appvion reflects the company's entry into diverse new markets and makes it clear that paper won't be the only component of the company's future success.
"We are proud of our company's heritage and our deep roots in the Appleton community," Richards emphasized. "We believe our new name appropriately reflects the strengths on which our company was built and the diversification and growth we expect to achieve in the future."
Appvion creates product solutions through its development and use of coating formulations, coating applications and Encapsys® microencapsulation technology. The company produces thermal, carbonless, and security papers, and Encapsys products. Appvion has production facilities in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, employs approximately 1,700 people, and is 100% employee-owned.

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), Ottawa, Ont., Canada, and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) this week announced that nominations are open for this year's Aboriginal Business Leadership Award. The $5,000 award recognizes and celebrates First Nations entrepreneurs for their success in a forest products business that exemplifies business leadership, exceptional environmental and safety performance, and the delivery of high-quality products and services. The recipient must also demonstrate a strong, long-term commitment to the Aboriginal community, particularly in supporting Aboriginal employment.
"We are delighted to once again offer an award to recognize the leadership excellence of an Aboriginal business in the forest products sector," said FPAC President and CEO David Lindsay. "Under Vision2020, we are aiming to refresh our workforce with an additional 60,000 recruits by the end of the decade, and Aboriginals are a key target. We particularly want to encourage Aboriginal businesses that show a long term commitment to Aboriginal employment."
President and CEO of the CCAB JP Gladu noted that "we are in the business of showcasing the leadership and contributions of outstanding Aboriginal business in Canada each and every day. The forest sector continues to contribute to the health and vitality of our Aboriginal communities in so many ways. The business success of our people in this sector is helping to educate all Canadians about our enormous accomplishments and economic potential. The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), Brussels, Belgium, will launch a new method for developing incipient ideas into breakthrough technologies. CEPI's goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of pulp and paper production by no less than 80% from the 1990 level by the year 2050, according to a news release this week by the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.
It is not possible to achieve this goal without new technologies, CEPI noted, estimating that known technologies can only achieve a 50%-60% reduction by 2050. Another aim is to generate substantial new added value for the products and production processes of the sector.
CEPI's model places two teams in competition with each other to discover creative and viable ideas and innovations that could, for example, help reduce the energy consumption of paper manufacturing. The teams consist of corporate experts, researchers, goods suppliers, and other paper and pulp industry players. In addition, they will include representatives of other sectors, as activities will be based on open innovation and the sharing of research findings, with the hope that this will lead to better utilization of research knowledge across different sectors of industry.
"The forest industry is going through a major structural transition and this calls for fresh approaches to the development of operations. Open innovation has produced good results in the ICT sector and now we will see how well it works for the forest industry," said Director Antro Säilä, who heads the Business Environment and Innovation unit of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.
"Paper engineers have traditionally been good at squeezing more performance out of machines and improving productivity through this avenue. In addition to this, we need a new type of approach that looks beyond internal limitations and does not hesitate to take on competent people regardless of whether or not they have a background in the traditional paper industry," Säilä added.
The two competing teams will convene in Helsinki this week to work on ideas and hear about the opportunities of the Finnish bioeconomy. The best breakthrough technology will be published in Brussels as part of the European Paper Week event this November.

Research and Markets, Dublin, Ireland, this week announced the addition of the Top Five Global Paper and Packaging Companies: Performance, Strategies, and Competitive Analysis report to its offering. Fragmentation of the paper and packaging market, competitive landscape, and corporate and marketing strategies adopted by the paper and packaging companies are factors that have significantly influenced industry dynamics, the report notes. The market reached an estimated revenue of $363 billion in 2011, with 5.2% CAGR during 2007-2011. The industry is expected to reach $463.4 billion in 2017, growing at a 4.2% CAGR.
The competitive landscape of the paper and packaging market has fluctuated over the past five years and affected the top five companies, the report says. The paper and packaging industry is highly fragmented and includes segments such as paper, sanitary, and household, paperboard and packaging, and industrial applications. The Asia Pacific (APAC) region dominates the industry and represents 39% of the global market. A combination of factors such as demographics, economic conditions, and environmental regulations influences market dynamics significantly.
The author found that the market size or revenue, average operating profit, average net profit, and annual growth rate are some of the driving forces of these companies. Buyers' power, the degree of competition, threats from new entrants, and the prevalence of substitutes also affect this market. The top five companies of the global paper and packaging market that are profiled in the report are Kimberly-Clark Corp., International Paper Co., Svenska Cellulosa AB (SCA), Oji Paper Co., and Nippon Paper Group.
This discussion includes a comparative analysis of the subject companies along with their respective company overviews, geographic footprints, financial metrics, market definitions and scope, industry performance, market strategies, corporate cultures, business structure, and SWOT analysis.

Demand for wood pellets in Europe has gone up dramatically the past few years as power companies on the continent have switched from using fossil fuels to renewable energy alternatives. Importation of pellets from North America increased more than 60% from 2011 to 2012 with the U.S. export volumes more than doubling, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review ( NAWFR), Seattle, Wash., USA.
The wood pellet export industry in North America has grown exponentially in a relatively short period of time. The export value has increased from an estimated $40 million in 2004 to almost $400 million in 2012. This fairly new trade development is the result of Europe's quest to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Energy generation from renewable resources has, with varying pace, gone up in all countries in the EU the past decade.
Woody biomass, including wood pellets, is one energy source that has attracted much attention and investments in a number of countries on the European continent. With limited domestic wood raw-material sources, countries such as the U.K., Belgium, and the Netherlands have increasingly relied on the importation of industrial wood pellets to reduce the usage of coal at some of their power utilities. The relatively high costs for wood pellets in Europe have resulted in increased interest in importing pellets from British Columbia and the southern states of the U.S. where wood raw-material costs are lower than in Europe.
A record volume of 3.2 million tons of pellets was exported from North America to Europe in 2012, according to the NAWFR, which compiles and publishes pellet trade volumes based on surveys of pellet exporters and customs data in North America and Europe, each quarter. From the U.S. South, shipments were up more than 100% compared with 2011, while Canadian exports increased 25% year-over-year.
The expansion of pellet production has been particularly noteworthy in the U.S. South where there have been 14 new pellet plants that are either new or planning to expand production in the coming year. Location and capacity of the new plants are reported in the latest issue of NAWFR.

Pulp & Paper
Ahlstrom Corp., Finland, has signed an amendment agreement with EQT, principal owner of Munksjö, related to the proposed combination of Ahlstrom's Label and Processing business area and Munksjö AB, to create Munksjö Oyj. The agreement covers an additional equity investment in Munksjö Oyj and the net debt position of Ahlstrom's Label and Processing business in Europe (LP Europe) and Munksjö AB as of March 31, 2013. It also details consequences of the commitments that Ahlstrom and Munksjö AB have provided to address competitive concerns of the European Commission with respect to the abrasive backings and pre-impregnated decor paper businesses that are part of the planned combination.
The parties have agreed to make an equity investment in Munksjö Oyj totaling approximately EUR 28.5 million, in addition to the previously agreed EUR 100 million. The equity investment will be made by Ahlstrom, EQT, and the shareholders of Munksjö AB. Ahlstrom has increased its original commitment by EUR 16 million to EUR 78.5 million and EQT has increased its original commitment by EUR 1 million to EUR 13.5 million by subscribing and paying for additional new shares in Munksjö Oyj. Munksjö AB's commitment amounts to EUR 11.5 million.
Based on the net debt determination of LP Europe as of this past March 31, Ahlstrom will receive EUR 151.5 million related to a net debt transfer to Munksjö Oyj in connection with the completion of the LP Europe part of the combination. Further, it has been agreed that Munksjö AB's shareholders, based on the net debt determination of Munksjö as of March 31, will receive a net debt related compensation amounting to EUR 11.5 million, which the shareholders intend to use for the equity investment in the new Munksjö Oyj, committed to by Munksjö AB as noted above.
As a result of the commitments that Ahlstrom and Munksjö AB have provided to the European Commission, the parties have agreed that Ahlstrom will purchase back all of the shares in Ahlstrom Osnabrück GmbH in Germany from Munksjö Oyj at an enterprise value of EUR 48 million immediately after the LP Europe completion has occurred. The abrasive backings and pre-impregnated decor paper businesses will then be divested to a third party.
The commitments to the European Commission will affect the expected synergies of the combination of Ahlstrom's Label and Processing business area and Munksjö AB by approximately EUR 5 million annually. Consequently, the combination is expected to create savings for Munksjö Oyj through synergies and efficiency improvements in the range of EUR 20-25 million annually. Of the identified synergies, a run-rate of about 60% is expected to be achieved within 12 months following the LP Europe completion and the rest during the following two years. Total costs to achieve these synergies are estimated to be EUR 10-15 million in cash, of which approximately EUR 6 million is expected to be incurred during the first 12 months and the remainder during the following two years. In addition to the synergies, further annual cost improvements of approximately EUR 10-15 million are expected related to standalone cost savings.
The LP Europe Completion is expected to take place on or before May 27, provided that the relevant competition clearances, e.g. from the European Commission, are obtained prior to that.

Andritz, Graz, Austria, reports that it has received orders from Stora Enso Nymölla AG and Domsjö Fabriker AB, both in Sweden, to modernize a recovery boiler and a sulfite liquor boiler, respectively. Due to the modernizations, the capacity of the two boiler plants will be increased by up to 20%. Both startups are scheduled for this year.
For Stora Enso's liquor recovery boiler in Nymölla, which went into operation in 1971, Andritz will supply the plate-type heat exchangers for pre-heating the combustion air in combination with an economizer to pre-heat the feed water. This technical concept is characterized by a long lifetime of the boiler and lower maintenance effort required; thus scheduled plant shutdowns can be reduced to a minimum and the plant's capacity increased significantly.
The scope of supply for sulfite liquor boiler No. 9 at Domsjö Fabriker, in operation since 1962, includes replacement of the super heater and evaporator heating surfaces, as well as partial replacement of the front and rear walls of the liquor boiler. The new design will improve fouling behavior of the boiler and enhance efficiency by up to 20%. Due to the very short assembly period of 18 days, the mill will have a very brief production shutdown.

The system is expected to lower operating expenses, reduce greenhouse gases, and help retain the existing 452 jobs at the facility.
"Domtar is excited to make this significant investment at our Hawesville facility," said Hawesville Mill GM Steve Henry. "This investment will benefit the environment, our community, and the long-term competitiveness of our facility."
To encourage the investment in Hancock County (where the mill is located), the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved Domtar for tax incentives up to $290,000 through the Kentucky Reinvestment Act (KRA). KRA is designed to assist companies that need to make significant capital investment in Kentucky facilities to remain competitive.

Mondi reports that its South Africa Division is planning to close a newsprint machine at the company's Merebank mill in South Africa. Mondi did not give an exact date for shutting down the machine.
The company noted in an interim management report that the decision to close one of two newsprint machines at the Merebank mill was due to the "ongoing decline in domestic newsprint demand and reorganization within the publishing sector." The one newsprint machine that will continue to operate has a production capacity of 120,000 metric tpy.
In addition to newsprint produced at Merebank by the Mondi Shanduka Newsprint operation, the mill also produces office paper, including the premium South African brand Mondi Rotatrim.

Containerboard/Packaging
Nine Dragons Paper (Holdings), Hong Kong, China, reports that it will, according to the company's estimation of market dynamics, have six production lines begin production in succession over the next three years, including five production lines in China as well as an additional packaging paperboard production line with an annual production capacity of 350,000 metric tons following the construction of Phase II in its Vietnam base. Along with active expansion of overseas markets, such a move is estimated to add more than 2 million metric tpy to its production capacity by then.
According to Chairlady Cheung Yan, given the "exuberant demand" in the regions where Nine Dragon's bases are located, as well as the increasing growth in downstream production capacity, the supply and demand for packaging paperboard products in the market will gradually increase. In view of favorable prospects of the market after 2015, the company is building the five production lines in China and one production line of Phase II in its Vietnam base. This will further strengthen its regional scale, diversifying its product portfolio to exploit its economies of scale in the regions.
Specifically, the company will have six production lines begin production at home and abroad in the next three years. This year, two packaging paperboard production lines with a total annual production capacity of 650,000 metric tons in Fujian Quanzhou will begin production before June. One packaging paperboard production line with a production capacity of 300,000 metric tpy in Sichuan Leshan will begin production before December.
From 2014 to 2015, a production line with a capacity of 350,000 metric tpy of Phase 1 in Liaoning Shenyang base will begin production before February 28, 2014. In the meantime, the second packaging paperboard production line in Shenyang base that was postponed previously will begin production ahead of schedule by the end of 2015, with an annual production capacity of 350,000 metric tons and a total investment of approximately RMB1.2 billion.

Smurfit Kappa, Ireland, has moved up its earlier announced plans to close two existing containerboard machines at its papermaking facility at Townsend Hook in Kent, U.K. and replace them with a single, more modern machine. The company was originally planning to close the two machines in 2014, with the new machine starting up in early 2015.
The company announced earlier this week, however, that the machines would be closing this July. The machines have a combined capacity of 250,000 metric tpy and are expected to close this July after a consultation process with employees, instead of 2014 as originally planned.
"We are bringing forward the closure to extend the training period for our workforce, advance the startup of the new paper machine, and increase the pace of the expected ramp-up. The facility will be rebuilt (using a machine acquired from the Cadidavid liquidator in 2011) into one 250,000 metric tpy, modern, lightweight machine that will be operational by the fourth quarter of 2014 rather than the first quarter of 2015," the company said.

When it comes to cleaning up the next massive crude oil spill, one of the best and most eco-friendly solutions for the job may be low-grade cotton from West Texas, according to a new study conducted by the Nonwovens and Advanced Materials Laboratory at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH), Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, USA. Seshadri Ramkumar, lead author of the study and manager of TIEHH, said he and his colleagues found that low-micronaire cotton – one of the lowest-quality types of cotton – is most effective at picking up oil. A pound of the low-micronaire cotton can pick up more than 30 lb of crude oil, and its natural waxiness helps to repel water.
The new study includes some of the first scientific data on unprocessed raw cotton's use in crude oil spills, and was published in the ACS journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research.
"In this region, about 10% of the cotton grown in West Texas is low micronaire," Ramkumar said. "It doesn't take a dye well, so it gets discounted. However, because low-micronaire cotton is less mature, it shrinks, and you are able to pack more fiber into a given area. The strength here is that the low-micronaire cotton absorbs the most crude oil. The oil is not only stuck to the surface, the oil gets absorbed into the fiber."
Ron Kendall, director emeritus at TIEHH and special assistant to the president, said the Deepwater Horizon disaster emphasized the need for better ways of cleaning up oil spills. "One of the things we realized from Deepwater Horizon is we didn't have the best tools for cleanup, and the technology wasn't right for the booms," Kendall said. "This discovery that low-micronaire cotton, which is the least valuable cotton, can absorb as much crude oil as it does is a breakthrough discovery. It gives us an excellent tool for cleanup of shorelines, animals, and ecologically sensitive areas as well as a new technology for booms that can stop oil sheen moving into wetlands. And it's biodegradable. This is just another added bonus use for low-end West Texas cotton. Now, farmers have a new use for low-end cotton in a very significant way for oil spill cleanup. It's a major discovery from scientific and economic standpoints."
Scientists have done extensive studies on fibers such as barley straw, kapok, and polypropylene wool, Ramkumar said. However, big gaps existed in knowledge about their basic crude oil-uptake mechanisms and no data existed on unprocessed raw cotton. His team decided to fill those gaps with research on the oil sorption properties of low-micronaire cotton.
The cotton fibers take up oil in multiple ways, including both absorption and adsorption in which oil sticks to the outer surface of the cotton fiber.
"Our interest was to see how raw cotton straight from the bale picks up the crude oil as well as determining the governing mechanism behind picking up the crude oil," he said. "We show through sophisticated testing that low-micronaire cotton is much finer and can pick up more crude oil. And crude oil is very different from refined motor oil. It's very dense and releases toxic vapors. It's not as easy to get picked up. In contrast to synthetic sorbents, raw cotton with its high crude oil sorption capacity and positive environmental footprint make it an ecologically friendly sorbent for oil spill cleanups."
Laboratory work using crude oil was performed by graduate student Vinitkumar Singh. Both Cotton Inc. and The CH Foundation contributed funds to this research.

E Ink Holdings, Taiwan, has announced the upcoming release of E Ink Mobius, a new flexible electronic paper display (EPD) technology. E Ink Mobius will be the first flexible display technology that will go into mass production for a large format digital paper product based on flexible Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology developed by Sony.
Mobius uses a TFT technology that will enable the development of much lighter and rugged products. Mobius displays can weigh less than 50% of the weight of an equivalent glass based TFT. This is particularly important for mobile products requiring larger display areas. A 13.3" display weighs approximately 60 grams.
The ruggedness and lightweight characteristics of Mobius are due to the TFT being constructed on a plastic substrate rather than traditional glass. The technology was developed by Sony specifically for use with EPDs in cooperation with E Ink. Sony has now transferred the technology to E Ink for mass production. E Ink will start mass production of the world's first 13.3 flexible EPD display this year.
Founded in 1992 by Taiwan's leading papermaking and printing group YFY, E Ink Holdings Inc. is the pioneer of TFT and ePaper business in Taiwan. Its corporate philosophy aims to deliver revolutionary products, user experiences, and environmental benefits through advanced technology development. This vision has led to its continuous investments in the field of ePaper display as well as its 2008 acquisition of Hydis Technologies, manufacturer of the world's best wide viewing angle LCDs, and its 2009 acquisition of E Ink Corp.

Recyclers and brokers of recovered fiber in Europe, North America, and elsewhere are facing increased hurdles selling into their largest market in China.
In late winter and early spring, shippers of secondary commodities into China have slowly begun to learn about "Operation Green Fence," an effort by Chinese environmental and customs officials to more vigorously inspect (and more willingly reject) what they consider to be sub-par container loads.
Paper Recycling Conference Asia, May 30-31 at the Hongta Hotel in Shanghai, represents an ideal opportunity for packers, merchants, and brokers to get on-the-scene insight into this emerging issue.
In each of the past years, North America alone has sent from 570,000 to 695,000 containers filled with scrap materials to China—with recovered fiber being the largest commodity by volume. Europe has sent a similarly large number of shipments to China. But carrying on with business as usual has not been an option for many in the recovered paper sector since Operation Green Fence was implemented in February 2013.
Numerous representatives from Chinese paper companies, government ministries, and trade associations are on the roster at Paper Recycling Conference Asia. Delegates will be able to find out from them—and have the opportunity to ask—details about the "Green Fence," what it is trying to keep out and how long it will last.
The event is being organized and co-hosted by the Recycling Today Media Group, Smithers Pira, and China TAPI. A full list of conference topics can be found on the webpage.
Register and reserve a hotel room to attend Paper Recycling Conference Asia.

The existence of cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibrils has been known for several decades, yet recent advances in science, particularly in the field of nanotechnology, have revealed that these materials contain unique physical properties, particularly high strength properties. Researchers have been studying how these materials can improve paper properties and will present their latest finding this June 24-27 in Stockholm, Sweden, at TAPPI's 8th Annual International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials at the KTH Royal Institute of Stockholm.
The program for this year's event has been released, and one session will focus on using cellulose nanofibers for improving retention and increasing strength in paper. Researchers from Aalto University in Finland will report on improved flocculation of both precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and kaolin with the addition of certain cellulose nanomaterials. Researchers from Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS) in Heidenau, Germany, will report on the importance of adding fillers, celluloses, and compounding agents in the right order to achieve the best results. Researchers from VTT in Finland will report on ways to increase the strength of paper by using filler particles coated with nanoscale calcium silicate hydrate (CS) structures.
New reports at the conference will present some exciting advances for both within the pulp and paper industry and beyond. The technical program features cellulose nanomaterials in a variety of applications, including:
- Unique and Thin-Film Composites
- Filler and Coating Applications for Different Paper Grades
- Improved Barrier Properties for Packaging Applications
- Cellulose Nanomaterials as Films and Carriers in Medical Applications
- Nanopaper and Iridescent Colored Cellulose Films.
With more than 80 technical presentations, five keynote presentations, and 50 poster presentations, this year's conference is packed with the latest applications of renewable nanomaterials.
Watch for additional updates from TAPPI on how nanotechnology, and cellulose nanomaterials in particular, can be a transformative technology for the pulp and paper industry.
The 8th Annual International Conference on Nanotechnolgy for Renewable Materials is hosted by TAPPI's International Nanotechnology Division, which strives to collectively advance the responsible and sustainable production and use of renewable nanomaterials. More information is available online.

Are you ready to go further, faster in your safety career? The Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) class can take you there.
The COSS Class is Unique
Not only will you learn how to read and understand the OSHA 1910 and 1926 CFRs and help your company avoid OSHA citations that cost millions of dollars, but more importantly, by learning how to work safely on a job site, you can teach your company how to lower fatalities and near misses. Almost 47% of COSS graduates responding to our survey indicate that, since taking COSS, their company's injury rate and/or OSHA recordables have decreased by as much as 25% and others attest to as much as a 100% decrease!
Request a Course Outline & Syllabus for more information.
The class also addresses the psychology of safety, the true cost of an accident, hazard recognition, how to start up a health and safety program, behavior based safety, system safety, and much more!
What Will You Receive?
Upon successfully completing the class, you will obtain your national Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) designation, your OSHA 10-hr. card of completion in construction, and your OSHA 10-hr. card of completion in general industry.
National Program Recognitions
COSS is currently one of only 37 programs in the world recongnized and accredited by the American Petroleum Institute (API). In addition, the certifying body for construction education for colleges, universties and technical/trade schools, American Council for Construction Education (ACCE), has also recongnized our program. COSS is the only non-degree program to receive this national endorsement. Lastly, COSS has been established as a mandatory course for students in the Construction Management Program at Louisiana State University.
Program Content
The program consists of 40 hr. of hands on, face-to-face learning, which is delivered by an Authorized OSHA outreach trainer in both construction and general industry. Case studies and workshops are used extensively to bring learning objectives into focus. Guest speaker from areas such as OSHA and other governmental agencies are used to enhance the learning experience. Student presentations, daily quizzes, practical reviews, and a comprehensive final exam will allow you to demonstrate your competency.
Prerequisites
The only prerequisite for the COSS class is you must have a high school diploma or equivalent. In each class, we tend to have a mix of non-experienced, first time safety persons, as well as safety professionals who have been in the safety field for 20+ years. But, we have learned that regardless of the numbers of years of experience you have in safety, everyone leaves the COSS class with a wealth of knowledge!
