Containerboard production decreased 1% compared to Jan. 2018. The mtm avg. daily production compared to Dec. 2018 was 3.5% lower. Containerboard operating rate was 93.1%, 1.8% lower than the same month last year. Production for export was 16.6% lower than Jan. 2018, dropping below 400 thousand short tons for the first time since June 2017.

Production stability observed in Europe contrasts with the reduced global paper and board production. Growth of 0.6% in 2018 compared to 2017, to 417 million metric tons according to very first estimates. This reduction was mainly driven by China, whose production decreased by close to 4%.

Total boxboard monthly production increased 4.1% when compared to Jan. 2018. The total boxboard operating rate was 96.8% for Jan. Total Solid Bleached Boxboard and Liner production was up 10% ytd; Recycled Boxboard production rose 2.1% ytd; and Unbleached Kraft and Gypsum declined 1.3% ytd.

Valmet's delivery includes a log infeed conveyor with de-icing, hydrostatically supported debarking drum and state-of-the-art horizontal feed chipper. According to the poll, more people support Northern Pulp’s plan for a new wastewater (effluent) treatment facility than oppose it. 36% support, 21% neither support or oppose, 27% oppose, 16% don't know. 76% said the economic impact of Northern Pulp’s closure would be very negative. The new facility will ensure that no wastewater ever leaves the property.

The Chinese papermaker ordered E-WIND® P100 Paper Rewinders, highly developed in terms of design, that will have a paper width of 7960 mm and will guarantee a maximum production speed of 2500 mpm (design speed). They will be able to accommodate large reels on the unwinder, with diameters up to 3800 mm and weighing about 65 metric tons.

Nine Dragons / ND Paper provided a brief update on the project to re-start the mill. While this is a relatively small step, it still represents an important stage as package boiler #5 was fired up and began releasing steam to mark the first major machine activity at the mill since it was idled in 2015.

Most of the participants stated that they would prefer paperboard because of its recyclability but commented that they wanted to see the product better. Based upon the overall findings, the participants were willing to pay more for the paperboard carton than the plastic box, which demonstrates that consumers are now actively looking for alternatives to plastic.
