Port of HaminaKotka Ltd and Steveco Oy have jointly constructed a world-class pulp terminal in the new D-area in the western part of the Mussalo Harbour in Kotka. The Port of HaminaKotka has invested almost 40 million euros in the infrastructure of the expansion area of approx. 30 hectares, and Steveco has built a modern pulp terminal of 20,000 m² for the sea transport of UPM’s Kaukaa and Kymi pulp mills to be focused at Mussalo.

A new report cited those as examples of how the pulp and paper industry that helped build Wisconsin – and became an issue in last year’s elections for governor and the Legislature – has remade itself.
 
GE Signs Multiyear Services Agreement with Sappi
GE announced an order for a multiyear services agreement with Sappi, the global provider of sustainable woodfibre products and solutions. GE will provide long-term maintenance services and performance upgrades on a 42-megawatt gas turbine supplied by another equipment manufacturer, powering Sappi’s industrial process. GE’s solution will allow Sappi to reduce its costs through a maintenance interval extension and performance benefits.

U.S. Printing-Writing paper Shipments Decreased in September 2019
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the September 2019 Printing-Writing Monthly report on October 16. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased seven percent in September compared to September 2018. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased five percent in September compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels remained essentially flat (-0.5%) when compared to August 2019.
 
American Forest & Paper Association Releases September 2019 Boxboard Monthly Report
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the September 2019 Boxboard Monthly report on October 18. Total Boxboard production in September decreased three percent compared to September 2018. It was down one percent when compared to the same nine months of 2018. The boxboard operating rate was 91.1 percent, down 2.2 points from September 2018 and down 1.3 points year-to-date.

Valmet will supply a coated board machine for Graphic Packaging International’s (GPI) mill in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the United States. With this investment in the latest coated board technology, GPI is committing to sustainable packaging with exceptional product quality and cost competitiveness for producing coated recycled board (CRB) grades. The start-up of the machine is scheduled for the first half of 2022.
