Marcal Paper Mill to Resume Operations in New Jersey

Rob Baron, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marcal Paper, announced [on Dec. 31] that the company will return to regular papermaking operations in New Jersey sometime in January, less than one year after a 10-alarm fire destroyed its iconic manufacturing facilities and caused the immediate shutdown of the business.

Resolute to acquire Conifex's Three U.S. Sawmills
Resolute Forest Products Inc. (NYSE: RFP) (TSX: RFP) announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Conifex Timber Inc.'s three sawmills in the U.S. South for $163 million plus working capital delivered at closing, which is currently estimated at $7 million. The three sawmills, with combined production capacity of 550 million board feet, are located in Cross City (Florida), and Glenwood and El Dorado (Arkansas).

Business Wire reports that Pixelle Specialty Solutions (“Pixelle”) has promoted Timothy R. Hess to Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mr. Hess will continue to report to Steven J. Klinger, Executive Chairman of Pixelle. Mr. Hess has served as President of Pixelle since 2018, when the company was created through private investment firm Lindsay Goldberg's acquisition of Glatfelter’s Specialty Papers Business Unit.

In Memoriam: TAPPI Fellow Richard Marshall Ludwig
 
   

We honor Richard Marshall Ludwig who was a member of TAPPI since 1954 and TAPPI Fellow since 1990. He passed away on December 19, 2019. We extend our sympathy and condolences to his families, colleagues and friends.

Richard had a proclivity for leadership throughout his career. He was Vice President of Engineering and Logistics at International Paper Co., long-time executive with Hammermill Paper Co., and former chairman of the Membership and Gifts & Bequests Committees of the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation.

Ludwig’s leadership expertise also earned him accolades from TAPPI. He was elected a TAPPI Fellow and is a recipient of the Leadership and Service Award.

Richard Marshall Ludwig will be missed but remembered for his legacy.
