Domtar, Montreal, Que., Canada, this week celebrated the startup of its newly installed 50 MW biofueled steam turbine generator at its Marlboro (Bennettsville) mill in South Carolina. Domtar invested approximately $40 million in 2010 to complete this project. Now fully operational, the new turbine has made the mill more energy efficient.

Domtar has entered into a 15-year agreement with Santee Cooper, South Carolina's state-owned electric company, for the purchase of up to 50 MW of green power. The renewable energy generated by the turbine would be enough to power roughly 31,000 South Carolina homes.

Domtar notes that it has been long committed to sustainable business practices and has implemented energy efficiency programs at all of its facilities to help reduce the impact of its operations on the environment. Since 2002, the company's increased reliance on lower-emitting biomass as a fuel source has resulted in a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity.

Domtar's self-generation of electricity is at approximately 67%, representing a 26% increase since 2002. Its use of renewable energy stands at approximately 74% of total energy use, which represents an 18% increase since 2002.

AkzoNobel, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, reports that it has invested close to EUR 90 million in a new facility being built in Brazil. The plant, operated by the company's Pulp and Paper Chemicals business, Eka Chemicals, will supply the world's largest pulp mill. The agreement – with Eldorado Celulose e Papel – emphasizes the importance of high growth markets to AkzoNobel and will help drive the medium-term strategy of doubling revenue in Brazil to EUR 1.5 billion.

The investment – AkzoNobel's biggest ever in Latin America – is centered on further expanding Eka Chemicals' sustainability focused Chemical Island concept. It will involve supplying, storing, and handling all chemicals for the 1.5 million metric tpy greenfield mill being constructed in the northern part of Três Lagoas City. The mill is expected to come on stream in September 2012.

"This 15-year agreement confirms our intention to accelerate growth and expand our activities in the world's high growth regions," said Rob Frohn, the AkzoNobel board member responsible for Specialty Chemicals. "We are about to make one of the biggest investments in our history, which emphasizes both the importance of Latin America to our growth ambitions and our commitment to the pulp and paper industry."

Pulp and Paper Chemicals General Manager Jan Svärd added that "future demand for pulp and paper chemicals in Latin America is projected to increase substantially over the next 15 years. This agreement therefore represents an exciting opportunity for us to expand our operations in the region."

Svärd further noted that Eka Chemicals will be building a world scale sodium chlorate production unit to supply the projected demands of the Eldorado mill, which has been designed to accommodate three pulp lines. The new Eka Chemicals facility will also supply other key customers in Brazil. Work on the new pulp mill site started in June last year.

Commenting on the agreement, Eldorado President Rogerio D'Alcantara Peres said that "building the world's largest pulp mill requires working with reliable partners who can provide the best technology. AkzoNobel's Chemical Island concept, together with the company's world class expertise and strong commitment to sustainability, meant that they were a natural choice for this major project."

The new facility will expand Eka Chemicals' pulp and paper activities in Brazil, where the business already operates its Chemical Island concept at several mills, as well as running production units in Jacareí, Eunapolis, Três Lagoas, Rio de Janeiro, and Jundiaí.

Kimberly-Clark Corp., Dallas, Texas, USA, announced this week that it plans to restructure its pulping and tissue making businesses, which will involve exiting its integrated pulp manufacturing operations. As part of this effort, K-C will streamline, sale, or close five to six manufacturing facilities around the world. Basically, the company said that it plans to get out of the business of making the pulp used in its paper products, as it copes with rising costs for oil, fiber, and other commodities. The restructuring is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

K-C said that exiting pulp manufacturing should improve its profitability and return on invested capital of its consumer tissue and K-C Professional units. Facilities to be streamlined, sold, or closed include the company's pulp and tissue plant in Everett, Wash., and its two Australian facilities that make pulp and tissue. It will also move some production to lower-cost locations. K-C did not indicate how many jobs might be lost in the overhaul.

The total cost of the restructuring is expected to be $280 to $420 million after tax ($400 to $600 million pre-tax). Cash costs are projected to be 25% to 50% of the total charges. As a result of the restructuring, the company expects that by 2013 annual net sales will decrease by $250 to $300 million and operating profit will increase by at least $75 million. Most of the restructuring will impact the consumer tissue business segment.

At this point in time, K-C expects that $195 to $265 million of the after tax charges ($280 to $380 million pre-tax) will occur in 2011, while benefits from the restructuring in 2011 are expected to be immaterial. In 2011 and 2012 the company will report adjusted results, which will exclude the costs of the restructuring. The company will report on the progress of the restructuring on a quarterly basis or when material developments occur.

Orient Paper, Hebei, China, a producer and distributor of diversified paper products, reported this week that it will replace two old steam boilers that were removed this past July with two new energy efficient units. Replacement of the old boilers was required by the Baoding City Environmental Protection Agency, in connection with the government's approval of the company's pending new 360,000 metric tpy corrugating medium paper production line.

Zhenyong Liu, chairman and CEO of Orient Paper, said that "with the installation of the new boilers, we have now resumed full production on our corrugating medium paper and offset printing paper lines. We continue to see growing market demand for paper products in China and tightening regional supply conditions resulting from government-mandated closures of regional paper mills."

With installation of the two new boilers completed, the company also announced that the same independent third-party appraisal firm has been retained to complete the production capacity checks and the formal, independent valuation appraisal on the operating production lines previously affected by the removal of the old boilers, including one production line of corrugating medium paper and two production lines of offset printing paper.

Orient Paper, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Shengde Holdings Inc., controls and operates Baoding Shengde Paper Co., and Hebei Baoding Orient Paper (HBOP) Milling Co. Founded in 1996, HBOP is engaged in the production and distribution of products such as corrugating medium, offset papers, and other paper and packaging-related products in China. The company uses recycled paper as its primary raw material. Baoding Shengde, founded in June 2009, and located in Baoding, produces digital photo paper.

Containerboard/Packaging
Demand for green packaging in the U.S., comprised of recycled content, reusable, and degradable packaging, is projected to increase 3.9% yearly to $41.7 billion in 2014, consuming 58 billion lb of material, according to a new report titled Green Packaging, released this past week by the Fredonia Group, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Growth will outpace overall packaging demand but will remain relatively moderate due to the maturity of many products and the large existing presence of recycled content packaging in paperboard and metal packaging. The fastest gains, the report notes, are anticipated for degradable packaging and plastic recycled content packaging.

Degradable packaging is forecast to expand 13.6 % annually to $685 million in 2014, driven by price competitiveness with conventional resins, capacity expansions, and rising demand for environmentally friendly manufactured goods. Advances will also be based on enhanced performance properties resulting from blending and other modifications, initiatives by brand owners to improve the environmental footprint of their packaging, and legislative bans on polystyrene foam foodservice disposables in some parts of the country. Preventing faster advances will be the maturity of some product types (e.g., ring carriers, loose-fill), the lack of consumer composting networks in most areas of the U.S., and competition from emerging green packaging materials such as non-biodegradable bioplastics.

Recycled content packaging constitutes the vast majority of green packaging and demand is forecast to increase 3.6% annually to $37.3 billion in 2014. Gains will be supported by increased collection activity and processing capacity, coupled with greater use of recycled content packaging by firms seeking to demonstrate environmental responsibility and differentiate their products. Robust growth is anticipated for plastic recycled content packaging based on more concerted collection efforts and expanded processing capacity, especially for food-contact approved resin grades.

Reusable packaging demand is expected to post above-average growth through 2014, improving from the 2004-2009 pace based on a rebound in manufacturing activity from a weak base in 2009. Demand for reusable plastic containers and intermediate bulk containers will benefit from an upswing in manufacturing activity and inroads into lower capacity packaging types such as drums, pails, and shipping sacks.

"We've been fans of RPTA for a long time and are excited to have our RPTA friends join us at PaperCon," said Larry N. Montague, president and CEO of TAPPI. "Recycled paperboard is an important market segment and the information shared by co-locating our two meetings will only benefit the industry."

PaperCon is North America's largest pulp and paper conference, bringing together industry leaders, technical experts, and manufacturing professionals from around the world. In 2011, the theme is "Rethink Paper: Lean and Green," highlighting new ways to improve efficiency, use less water, fiber and air, and achieve operational excellence. The unique program of peer-reviewed papers and invited speakers will attract CEOs, mill managers, superintendents, scientists and engineers from around the world.

PaperCon brings together members with decades of experience in leading, producing and advancing technology for the pulp and paper industry as well as a strong history of more than 90 years in organizing key industry educational programs, conferences and exhibits. PaperCon combines TAPPI's expertise in papermaking, coating, and leadership/management topics with information from producers, government and academic entities, technology suppliers, consumers and associations in multiple industries looking for more cost effective and profitable ways of doing business. New for 2011, special forums are planned on tissue making, sustainability and maintenance.
