Almost 40% of K-12 and higher education schools are storing or throwing away textbooks that are dated, damaged, or have otherwise reached the end of their productive life, leaving significant potential to increase book recycling programs across the country, according to a new study by the National Wildlife Federation, Merrifield Va., USA. The report concludes more education about the benefits of textbook recycling is needed to help schools identify options for recycling of unused textbooks. While the report highlights a number of pilot textbook recycling programs being conducted by higher education institutions such as the University of Wyoming, Columbia College, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, there are few K-12 school districts participating in similar efforts.
The positive news is that when books are recycled, the recovered fiber is being put to good re-use – generally in tissue, cardboard, linerboard, boxboard, or insulation, thereby saving virgin resources. The bad news is that not enough books are currently being recycled; however, this is a situation that can be changed – given enough incentive, education, and implementation of proven methods of disposal and processing.
National Wildlife Federation, publisher McGraw-Hill (New York, N.Y.), and publication paper producer NewPage Corp. (Miamisburg, Ohio), entered into a collaborative project to study textbook recycling in the U.S., pilot a recycling project, and develop best practices to increase textbook recycling. This report, "A Research Study on Textbook Recycling in America: Recommendations for Proper Disposal and Repurposing at the End of a Textbook's Useful Life," is based primarily on what currently happens to textbooks at the end of their useful life.
While the original assumption was that recycling books would be relatively easy, the research indicates that it requires discipline, structure, organization, and an outlet and method for disposal and processing of books. Importantly, the report also states that educating the public about the recyclability of books would have a positive effect on changing behavior. The impetus for conducting this research and pilot project was to support McGraw-Hill's sustainability commitment, NewPage Corp's desire to increase recovered fiber in the U.S., and National Wildlife Federation's environmental education and sustainability programs, Eco-Schools USA and Campus Ecology.
The intent of the report is to highlight the lifecycle of textbooks, from production through disposal, and to provide needed information and recommendations to various interested sectors on how they might establish a textbook recycling program at their school, university, or in their community. The report was peer reviewed by industry leaders in book publishing, book manufacturing, paper manufacturing, and recycling.
The full report and additional resources and information are available online.
"This innovative textbook recycling program was a natural fit with National Wildlife Federation's work to promote business and educational practices that are healthy for our environment," said Kevin Coyle, NWF's VP of Education and Training. "It also aligns with our work on sustainably procured paper, which in part relies on an increased supply of recovered fiber. The best practices that were an outcome of this project will be shared with our K-12 schools through NWF's Eco-Schools USA program and with higher education institutions through our Campus Ecology program."
McGraw-Hill has instituted a number of green practices at its distribution centers, including recycling a majority of the paper recovered from old textbooks. NWF's new program will focus on helping individual students, schools, and organizations recycle hardcover books that are outdated or otherwise unsuitable for reuse.
According to Brian Kozlowski, director, sustainable development, NewPage Corp., "the project team identified a number of barriers that currently impede textbook recycling as well as a number of opportunities that can materially increase the recovery and recycling of textbooks at the end of their useful life."

Cascades Tissue Group USA, Waterford, N.Y., this week reported that it has achieved Green Seal Standard, GS-1 re-certification of Sanitary Paper Products for its entire line of Cascades® and North River® away-from-home (AFH) towel and tissue products. As a result, Cascades now possesses the largest offering of Green Seal-certified towel and tissue products throughout North America today. The re-certification encompasses 114 branded products, all made from 100% recycled fiber.
In September 2011, Green Seal made major revisions to its GS-1 standard. The standard was first established more than 20 years ago for products such as bathroom tissue, facial tissue, paper towels, napkins, wipes, and placemats. Overall, it sets the environmental, health, and social requirements for sanitary paper products and comprehensively addresses environmental life-cycle issues spanning raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, and product use and performance.
"Cascades has offered Green Seal-certified paper towels and tissue since 2005," said Dr. Arthur Weissman, president and CEO of Green Seal. "In achieving certification to the revised GS-1 standard, the North River and Cascades products continue to represent leadership in sustainability in this industry."
The revised GS-1 standard provides more stringent criteria such as increasing the amount of post-consumer material required by an average of 25%, monitoring air and wastewater quality, and expanding product performance and packaging requirements. Products must also adhere to strict requirements related to qualities like weight, strength, absorbency, and sheet count and size.
"We're honored to have the most products conforming to GS-1 in the market and commend Green Seal for their detailed, comprehensive approach to ensuring high standards of product performance and environmental quality," said Suzanne Blanchet, President and CEO of Cascades Tissue Group. "Given that these papers are heavily used in North America, and often used just once before being disposed of, it's a valuable certification for everyone."

Irving Paper, Saint John, N.B., Canada, reports that it has a "new target to beat" in 2013 as it ends 2012 with "record-breaking production." The company says that its team of more than 300 employees pulled together to make 408,214 metric tons of specialty grade paper in 2012.
While production has increased, the company notes, "the Irving team has worked hard to reduce the mill's impact on the environment." Over the past five years, the company has achieved a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions—the equivalent of about 20,000 cars off the road.
Saint John is the province's forestry hub; and Irving Paper points out that it is a significant contributor to the local economy, generating tens of millions of dollars in payroll and purchasing more than $130 million a year in goods and services from New Brunswick suppliers. The mill is also active in the community – including volunteering with the award-winning PALs program at Glen Falls School, revitalizing local playgrounds, and supporting meal programs.

The Rottneros Group, Stockholm, Sweden, says that it will continue to produce groundwood pulp at its Rottneros Mill in Sweden. The initiative to improve the groundwood mill's process has resulted in the mill producing and marketing a new grade with properties that are particularly attractive to board manufacturers, the company explains.
The board of Rottneros announced in May 2012 that it had entered into negotiations concerning the termination of continuous groundwood pulp production at the Rottneros Mill. Negotiations, which were concluded in mid-year, resulted in the organization having to reduce its staff by around 50 posts. Twenty or so employees are now being offered continued work.
Rottneros noted that it plans to produce between 40,000 and 50,000 metric tons of groundwood pulp in 2013, made up of the new board grade as well as current printing paper grades.
Rottneros is an independent producer of market pulp. The group includes the parent company Rottneros AB and its subsidiaries Rottneros Bruk AB and Vallviks Bruk AB, with operations involving the production and sale of market pulp. TAPPI News
Careers, like life, cannot always be defined in black and white terms; rather there are always gray areas, as well as some very colorful ones. Just ask TAPPI member Tom Gencarelli who, just seven years into his career, says he learned very quickly after graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering that being professionally successful wasn't always as straightforward either and was often tied to developing strategic relationships.
It is his membership in TAPPI that Tom says enabled him to meet and network with individuals who were instrumental in rapidly progressing his career. "I really assumed that all technical industries were just about meeting product specifications," he said, "but relationships are still key to success and had I not formed the great relationships I have today with key members like Honghi Tran and Glenn Hanson, I do not think I would be in the position I am today." What Great Leaders Know and Do
By: Ken Blanchard & Mark Miller
- Uses the popular "business fable" format that Ken pioneered
- Explains the five essential practices exhibited by the best leaders and provides practical ideas on how to make these a reality in your life.
At one time or another, everyone in a position of authority-whether in a multinational corporation or a local volunteer group-wonders what the key to great leadership is. And who better to answer that question than the team of Ken Blanchard, whose books on leadership have sold over 20 million copies, and Mark Miller, who worked his way up from line worker to vice president of one of the largest fast-food chains in the country. In The Secret, Blanchard and Miller use the uniquely accessible "business fable" format that Blanchard pioneered to get at the heart of what makes a leader truly able to inspire and motivate people. Debbie Brewster, recently promoted and struggling, finds herself about to lose her job due to poor performance. In an attempt to save her career, she enrolls in a new mentoring program offered by her company. Much to her surprise, Debbie finds her mentor is none other than Jeff Brown, the president of the company. Debbie decides that she is going to ask her new mentor the one question she feels she desperately needs answered: "What is the secret of great leaders?" Jeff's immediate answer-that great leaders serve their followers-completely flummoxes Debbie. Over the next 18 months, Jeff helps Debbie discover and explore five fundamental ways that leaders lead through service.
The Secret puts what Blanchard and Miller have learned about leadership in a form that anyone can easily understand, embrace, and pursue. It is a book that will benefit not only those who read it, but also the organizations they work in an the people who look to them for guidance.
