Stora Enso, Helsinki, Finland, this week announced plans to restructure its operations through the permanent shutdown of two newsprint machines in Sweden. The company also plans efficiency improvements in the Printing and Reading customer service and the Building and Living Business Area. These profitability improvement actions are planned to reduce annual costs by EUR 54 million and reduce the number of employees by approximately 600 altogether.

Printing and Reading plans the permanent shutdown of PM 2 at the Hylte Mill in Sweden, which has an annual capacity of 205,000 metric tons of newsprint, and PM 11 at the Kvarnsveden Mill in Sweden, which has an annual capacity of 270,000 metric tons of newsprint, in the second quarter of this year. This represents 3.4% of European newsprint capacity. The plans to shut down capacity are due to continuing structural weakening of newsprint demand in Europe, the company notes.

In addition, Stora Enso plans to create a common platform for all of its Printing and Reading sales desk, order handling, and logistic services in Europe to improve customer service. These processes currently handled at seven customer service centers, mills, and logistic service centers will be centralized into five customer service centers in Finland, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and the U.K. The company plans to establish a separate Logistics Service Center for overseas business in Gothenburg, Sweden, to serve all Stora Enso's business areas.

Building and Living plans to reduce costs, increase productivity, and find sustainable improvement in all operations to overcome continued poor profitability. The plans announced include downsizing of Sollenau Sawmill in Austria, transfer of some production from the high-cost Pfarrkirchen Mill in Germany to the low-cost Zdirec Mill in the Czech Republic, and efficiency improvement actions at Kitee and Honkalahti sawmills in Finland. In addition, Building and Living is planning cost reduction measures in all other units and in sales and general administration, as well as in support functions throughout the whole business area.

Stora Enso will record a restructuring provision and a fixed asset and working capital write-down as non-recurring items related to the restructuring plans described above with a negative impact of approximately EUR 88 million on the operating profit in its first quarter 2013 results.

No decisions regarding closures and employee reductions will be taken until the local co-determination negotiations have concluded. Stora Enso says it will make every effort in co-operation with local communities to help affected personnel find new employment opportunities, and all job openings in other Stora Enso units would be available to those affected

The OpEx Maintenance and Reliability Workshop at TAPPI PaperCon 2013 in Atlanta, Ga., USA, on April 30, will be the third annual OpEx event in a row, and the fourth counting the extra edition at TAPPI's 2012 PEERS Conference in New Orleans last October. This year's OpEx in Atlanta examines the most successful paths today's P&P mills are taking to improve asset reliability. A special highlight for 2013 is a joint session with the Recycled Paper Trade Association (RPTA) that explores Operator Driven Reliability (ODR) from an up-close, mill case-study perspective.

In the joint session with RPTA, Christer Idhammar with IDCON examines what has been tried with ODR, who's succeeded, what's failed, and why—all based on mill case study results. Tony Kenneson-Adams of RockTenn then looks in-depth at how his Solvay recycled containerboard mill in Syracuse, N.Y., set up its ODR program and the pitfalls they experienced along the way. Rounding out the joint OpEx/RPTA session, Jim Davis of Performance Consultants Associates illustrates how to effectively support ODR programs by building "The Perfect Maintenance Storeroom."

The keynote speaker for OpEx 2013 is John Yolton with SKF, a highly respected paper industry reliability expert who will explore "The Continuing Journey to Asset Reliability Improvement." As Yolton notes, "with the NAM pulp and paper market contracting, only the most reliable equipment can provide a competitive advantage. Data demonstrates that there is clearly a return on investment for those ‘best' within the pool of competitors." Yolton's presentation will identify and discuss primary issues associated with the top 3%, e.g., the "best" and the "rest."

The opening keynote session also includes presentations by Bill Wick of American Industrial Metrology on "A Holistic Approach to Paper Machine Alignment" and Dave Cutnaw of SKF on "Maintenance and Asset Reliability Strategies—Developing a Foundation for Success."

The afternoon OpEx sessions focus on work force structuring and education. In addition to Michael Von Grumbkow of Voith Paper, who will dissect asset management from an OEM perspective, a team from GPAllied will examine new and proven approaches in use by today's pulp and paper mills. David Neikirk will outline how to best implement asset management strategies. Shon Isenhour will present a compendium of best M&R education practices, and Chris Davis and Bobby Allen discuss structuring and managing the Natural Work Team. Also in the afternoon sessions, Dave Mulcahey of SKF will discuss "Sealing Solutions for the Pulp and Paper Industry."

More information about PaperCon 2013 and the OpEx Maintenance and Reliability Workshop, including registration procedures, is available online. Also available online is the 2013 OpEx Workshop program.

For an eight-week period beginning this week and running alongside the NCAA basketball tournament, North American colleges and universities will take part in competition that increases recycling participation by students and staff, while raising awareness about waste reduction programs on campuses. RecycleMania will run through March 30, with the involvement of 523 schools, more than 4.4 million students, and nearly 1 million faculty and staff participating in 47 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. New York has the best representation with 38 colleges participating, followed by Texas and Pennsylvania. The list of institutions taking part is diverse, ranging from Tulane University to Washington State University, to Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania.

Schools compete in 11 categories to see which can recycle the most paper, paperboard/containerboards, cans and bottles, and food waste on a per capita basis, which can produce the least amount of waste, and which recycles the largest percentage of their overall waste stream. In one of two new categories—Game Day: Basketball—schools are challenged to increase their recycling and reduce waste generation at a single home basketball game. A second new category targeting film plastics will call attention to the recyclability of items such as dry cleaning bags, shrink wrap, and shopping bags.

Colleges and universities choose which categories to participate in and have flexibility to compete in the formal rankings or go at their own pace in a less formal "Benchmark" division. Each week schools record how much was recycled or thrown out and the standings are regularly updated.

"RecycleMania's power comes from the way it taps school spirit to motivate students who may not react to a traditional environmental message," according to Bill Rudy, recycling manager at Brigham Young University and president of RecycleMania Inc.

"Promoting recycling and waste reduction to college students is an important step to building and sustaining vibrant communities, both on campuses and beyond," said Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Matt McKenna. "Our organization is thrilled to sponsor and administer the RecycleMania program as part of our effort to engage the future generation of environmental stewards."

The competition is made possible with the sponsorship support of the Alcoa Foundation, the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), The Coca-Cola Company, and SCA.

"Programs like RecycleMania teach and motivate people to recycle and to measure the results of their efforts," said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman. "The paper industry has achieved noteworthy recovery goals for years, but we cannot claim sole responsibility for these results; it is thanks to the millions of individuals who make the choice to recycle every day. Our industry has pledged to exceed 70% recovery of our products for recycling by 2020, and initiatives like RecycleMania will help us get there."

Joseph Russo, VP, sales and marketing, SCA's Away-From-Home Professional Hygiene business in North America, said that "for SCA, our sustainability commitment encompasses everything we do. It drives the value added solutions we create for customers, our daily operations, and the responsible management of our forests in Sweden. Here in North America we use recycled materials to make many of our products, with a focus on efficiency and using environmentally sound processes. Our ongoing participation in RecycleMania is one of the many ways SCA inspires others to join us in our sustainability commitment and establish lifelong recycling habits. We're looking forward to supporting another year of spirited competition between hundreds of universities and colleges across the country."

In 2012, 92 million lb. of recyclables and organic materials were recovered, which prevented the release of nearly 150,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E). This reduction in greenhouse gases is comparable to the annual emissions from more than 25,800 passenger cars, electricity use of more than nearly 16,400 homes, or the burning of nearly 705 railcars' worth of coal.

More information and a complete list of participants are available online.

Market Roundup
Pellet exports from the two primary pellet-producing regions on the North American continent, the U.S. South and British Columbia, continued to increase in the 3Q/12 and reached a new record of 860,000 tons, according to North American Wood Fiber Review (NAWFR), Seattle, Wash., USA, which compiles and publishes pellet trade based on customs data and surveys of pellet exporters each quarter. Shipments in the 3Q/12 were more than 70% higher than the same quarter in 2011. Pellet exports from the U.S. South have skyrocketed the past two years with a quadrupling to 485,000 tons from the 3Q/10 to 3Q/12. Canadian exports also have gone up the past few years, but at a slower pace.

Beyond the trade statistics tracking the rise of pellet export volumes, another spate of export pellet plant announcements detailed in the NAWFR emphasized the quickly growing trade relations that are being established between European power utilities and U.S. pellet producers. The most striking announcement came in mid-December when Drax, a U.K. power company, stated its intention to build two 450,000-ton pellet plants, one in the state of Louisiana and one in Mississippi. Most other export-oriented pellet plants, while invested in by European utilities, are separate U.S.-based entities, with supply agreements and MOU's defining the business relationship.

The three major European pellet import countries remain the U.K., the Netherlands, and Belgium, while Italy, Denmark, and Sweden are notably involved in pellet imports from North America, but on a much smaller scale. Denmark's Dong Energy utility, however, announced its intentions to switch to woody biomass at three of its coal plants, an action likely to add demand from the U.S. Southeast.

Announced U.S. South pellet export plants increased sharply in the second half of 2012. Export pellet facilities under construction, conversion, or redesigned will add an additional 1.7 million tons of capacity during 2013, as reported by the NAWFR. In addition to these plants that are already under construction, five additional plants have been announced, and if they are actually built on the disclosed sites, they would bring another 2.3 million tons of capacity into play by the end of 2014.

Asia Pulp & Paper Group, Jakarta, Indonesia, this week announced an end to the clearing of natural forest across its entire supply chain in Indonesia, effective immediately. Beginning this past Friday (February 1), all of APP's suppliers suspended natural forest clearance while independent assessments take place to identify areas of high conservation value that will be protected through a long-term management program.

From February 1, High Carbon Stock (HCS) assessments undertaken by The Forest Trust (TFT) will identify all forested areas, enabling APP to ensure that future plantation development does not take place in forests. On Tuesday of this week (February 5), APP announced its new Forest Conservation Policy during the latest quarterly update of its ‘Vision 2020' Sustainability Roadmap that was published in June 2012.

Initially the APP Sustainability Roadmap set out a plan for APP to implement High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) principles and end natural forest clearance across its entire supply chain by 2015. This week's announcement means that objective has been accelerated by almost two years.

APP has said that the HCVF and HCS policies will be applied immediately to any further expansion or development of its business. The Group has encouraged third parties to participate in a monitoring program that ensures these commitments are being implemented.

Teguh Ganda Wijaya, chairman of the APP Group, said that "this is a major commitment and investment from APP Group. We are doing this for the sustainability of our business and for the benefit of society. We hope our stakeholders will support our new policy, help us along the way, and urge other industry players to follow. APP is a world leader in the pulp and paper business, and we will act as leaders are expected to do."

Aida Greenbury, APP managing director for sustainability, noted that "APP has today committed to protect all natural forests across its supply chain as part of its plans to support the government of Indonesia's low carbon development strategy for our economy. Our new Forest Conservation Policy sets our company on course to be a leading world-class paper company solely based on sustainable plantation sources."

APP has also committed to expand its policies on social issues, particularly with respect to the "Free and Prior Informed Consent" of indigenous peoples and local communities where new developments are taking place.

The APP Group of companies is one of the world's largest vertically integrated pulp and paper companies, with an annual combined pulp, paper, and converting products capacity of more than 18 million metric tons. APP-Indonesia and APP-China currently market their products in more than 120 countries across six continents. The majority of APP's production facilities are Chain-of-Custody certified by SVLK, LEI, and PEFC.

Catalyst Paper, Richmond, B.C., Canada, reports that it has completed the U.S. Court approved sale of its Snowflake, Ariz., USA, assets and shares of Apache Railway. The Hackman Capital-led buyer group purchased the assets of the closed Snowflake facility and the shares of Apache Railway for $13,460,000 and other non-monetary consideration. The transaction received local support from the Town of Snowflake and other interests, based on the buying group's intention to continue to operate the Apache Railway as a going concern.

"The successful completion of this transaction will assist Catalyst in reducing its interest obligations and improve overall liquidity," said President and CEO Kevin J. Clarke. "With challenging markets and currency impacts to contend with, we are maintaining tight control of spending on all fronts and making the sale of all remaining non-core assets a priority."

Aided by the sale of the Snowflake assets and the sale of inventories and realization of accounts receivable associated with the Snowflake closure, Catalyst has been able to repay substantially all of its cash drawings under its ABL facility, leaving only customary letters of credit and a minimal cash drawing outstanding under the facility at this point in time. Drawings under the ABL facility fluctuate with Catalyst's working capital needs from time to time.

Kelheim Fibres, Bavaria, Germany, reports that it has developed the first viscose fiber with intrinsic water repellent properties. The fiber has been named Olea. In contrast with other methods of creating hydrophobic properties, Kelheim has been able to maintain the typical properties of the viscose fiber by incorporating the hydrophobicity in the fiber matrix itself.

Thanks to incorporation of the additive during the spinning process, the hydrophobic effect is durable and cannot be washed out.

The additive used for the production of Olea fiber is made of renewable materials, like the fiber itself, and so Olea is a fully biodegradable fiber. While viscose fibers are usually known for their excellent liquid absorption capacity, there are also numerous applications that can benefit from Kelheim's hydrophobic Olea fiber.

"Olea is an environmentally friendly alternative for the cover- and back-sheets of hygiene products—for example nappies, sanitary towels, or incontinence pads. To protect the wearer's skin, these sheets need to remain dry while they facilitate the transport of liquid away from the skin," explains Dr. Philipp Wimmer from Kelheim's R&D team. "Beyond that, our Olea fiber offers advantages for both wearer and environment. The former benefits from the comfort, skin-friendliness, and extra softness of our viscose fiber, and the latter from the fact that Olea enables the production of functional nonwovens made of 100% viscose fibers that are therefore completely biodegradable."

In addition, Olea fibers are suitable for demanding hygiene and food applications as the additive is FDA approved. Kelheim's range of viscose specialties now covers the two poles of absorbency performance—from the hydrophobic Olea fiber to viscose fibers with water retention up to more than 400%—and so offers a comprehensive choice for the nonwovens industry.

At the same time, Kelheim Fibres is testing Olea for textile applications. The unique combination of hydrophobic properties and the typical excellent moisture management and wearer comfort of viscose fibers are very promising, especially for sportswear and other functional textile applications, the company says.

Södra Cell, Sweden, reports that it has sold 100,000 metric tons of textile pulp (dissolving pulp) since production began at its Morrum mill in December 2011. This milestone has been reached sooner than planned.

"We had budgeted to produce 50,000 metric tons in 2012. That we reached 100,000 metric tons in January 2013 is a fantastic result," said Dag Benestad, business operations manager for Södra's textile pulp.

It took 12 months to convert line 1 at Mörrum to textile pulp and the company is now looking at converting an additional line to hardwood-based textile pulp, primarily for customers in Europe and Asia.

Today, the main market for dissolving pulp is the textile industry, for example, in the manufacture of viscose. Wood fibers have been used in clothing manufacture since the 1920s. The emerging market in Asia and the increased interest in environmental issues have contributed to an upswing in the production of this type of clothing. Today, 4% - 5% of the world's textile fibers are based on cellulose from wood, corresponding to approximately 4 million metric tons of pulp. The pulp can also be used in the manufacture of cellophane, Wettex cloths, hygiene articles, etc.

The dissolving pulp produced by Södra is called textile pulp since it will be sold further to customers who will dissolve the pulp and produce viscose pulp. In the next phase, yarn will be spun, which will then be used in clothing production.

Södra Cell is the world's third largest market pulp supplier, with a total annual production of more than two million metric tons. Twin Rivers Paper Co., South Portland, Maine, USA, a producer of lightweight specialty packaging, label, and publishing papers, this week announced that it has made significant environmental improvements in recent years. Since 2006, the company has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 76% and now derives 83% of its energy from carbon-neutral sources.

Twin Rivers has beneficially reused 93% of its solid process by turning this waste stream into compost, fuel, land applications, and value-added raw materials. The company also has reduced its electrical consumption each year through the installation of variable-speed motors. It installed a system that replaces fresh water with processed water, saving nearly a million gallons of water every day, approximately equivalent to one and a half Olympic size swimming pools. By the end of 2013, the company will complete an initiative to reduce up to 85% of the odor from its Edmundston, N.B., Canada, operations.

"We are tackling environmental projects that minimize our environmental footprint," says Roland Leger, manager of the Edmundston pulp mill. "We are firmly committed to completing the odor-reduction project by the end of 2013."

Twin Rivers notes that environmental responsibility plays a large role in shaping its operations, products, and processes. Its portfolio of sustainable papers is built around fiber certification and recycled content and the company continues to find creative ways for reducing its environmental footprint.

Containerboard/Packaging
Amcor Packaging Pty, Australia, has successfully brought on-steam its Metso (Finland)-supplied complete containerboard production line B9 at the company's Botany mill in Sydney, Australia. The production line was officially opened in an inauguration ceremony this past week.

Managing Director of Amcor Australasia and Packaging Distribution Nigel Garrard said that the investment of more than $500 million has brought world-leading technology to the Australasian market. "This is the most sophisticated recycled papermaking machine in Australasia. It produces high-quality, 100% recycled brown paper that is stronger, more consistent, and has an improved color for our customers," he said.

The new 6.25-m-wide B9 machine, the ninth paper machine to operate at the Botany site, has an annual production capacity of approximately 400,000 metric tons of 100% recycled testliner and fluting grades in the basis weight range of 80 to 200 gsm, from wastepaper collected throughout the Sydney region. The design speed of the machine is 1,600 m/min. The new line replaces three older machines aged 43 to 52 years, reducing water consumption by 26%, energy usage by 34%, and the amount of waste sent to landfill by 75%, according to Gerrard.

Metso's delivery included an OCC (old corrugated containers) pulping line and a complete OptiConcept boardmaking line from headboxes to reel with a stock preparation system, air systems, chemical systems, and a high-capacity winder and a roll handling system. A comprehensive Metso DNA automation package includes process, machine, and quality controls, and machine condition monitoring. The machine itself is 330 meters long and 22 meters high. Reels of paper weigh up to 47 metric tons and measure approximately 5.7 meters in diameter.

Metso's extended scope of supply also included complete mill engineering and electrification and installation and supervision services related to commissioning, testing, and startup. Metso additionally provided training services for the project.

The partnership between Metso and Amcor includes an agreement for the supply of mill maintenance services for the B9 boardmaking line. With the multi-year mill maintenance agreement, Metso assumes full responsibility for the establishment of maintenance operations, mill maintenance services, and the management of improvement projects for the stock and paper production facilities and for the mill utilities at the Botany mill.

Huhtamäki Oyj (Finland) reports that its Huhtamaki Inc. subsidiary, Desoto, Kan., USA, has purchased a manufacturing facility in Batavia, Ohio, USA, to set up a new state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution unit to serve customers in the foodservice and retail industries. The new facility, formerly owned by the Ford Motor Co. and which also houses the University of Cincinnati's UC East Campus, will initially produce paper drink cups and distribute products made throughout the Huhtamaki manufacturing network.

With the purchase, Huhtamaki continues its series of investments in expanding and strengthening its disposable product offering and capability in the U.S. "With this investment, we begin to fully leverage our paperboard packaging expertise and our global foodservice position also in the U.S.," said Jukka Moisio, CEO of Huhtamäki Oyj.

The total investment, including purchase of the site (located 25 miles east of Cincinnati), improvements in infrastructure, and machinery investments to set up capacity, will be approximately $60 million (EUR 45 million) over the next three years. The majority of the investment will take place this year. Huhtamaki plans to begin operations in Batavia during the second half of this year and expects to create approximately 237 jobs by the end of 2016.

The site is strategically located in Batavia, with excellent rail and highway access and proximity to major foodservice markets. The optimal location of the site will enable Huhtamaki to better serve its U.S. foodservice and retail customers.

"By setting up this world class disposables manufacturing unit in Batavia, we are creating a platform to expand operations as we grow," says Clay Dunn, EVP, North America. "In addition to building a plant with optimal material and workflows, we will be able to optimize the product range in existing manufacturing units. Our initial focus in Batavia will be on paper cups, which are the core of Huhtamaki's global foodservice offering," he noted.

"Today's announcement caps an exciting 18-month period in which we completed three acquisitions and added seven production facilities in the U.S. to expand our ability to offer customers a broad product line and coast-to-coast coverage from 17 North American plants," Dunn added.

"The open space configuration is ideally suited for world-class capability in productivity and material flow," Fred Betzen, VP of operations, Huhtamaki North America, said. "This new facility has the space and infrastructure to meet growing customer needs for additional products and production volume and can be expanded over the next several years."

Huhtamaki Group is a producer of consumer and specialty packaging with 2011 net sales of EUR 2 billion. Foodservice and consumer goods markets are served by approximately 14,000 people in 64 manufacturing units and several sales offices in 31 countries.

SIG Combibloc, Germany, part of the New Zealand based Rank Group, has introduced a bottle made of "cardboard." Known as combidome, the new packaging combines the best features of a carton pack with the best features of a bottle. Combidome looks like a bottle, and thanks to its shape, stability, and smooth pouring action, it is also just as easy to handle. And in addition, combidome offers all of the proven and unrivalled benefits of a carton pack in terms of product protection, environmental, and economic considerations. The entire carton pack—from the base to the dome that gives it its distinctive bottle shape and its name—is manufactured from a paperboard composite.

Markus Boehm, chief market officer (CMO) at SIG Combibloc, notes that "with combidome, we have created a carton pack that offers a new dimension in differentiation and convenience, and brings with it all of the proven environmental benefits of the beverage carton."

The slim, sturdy combidome carton sits very comfortably in the hand. The carton pack consists of two sections: a carton body composed from the base to the dome of paperboard composite, and the screw cap domeTwist. Inside the combidome filling machine, the two components are assembled into the finished carton pack, aseptically filled, and securely sealed. The single-action domeTwist screw cap is positioned in the center of the package's top, and is easy to open. At 28 mm, the inner diameter of the closure is particularly large, ensuring smooth pouring and enabling consumers to drink conveniently straight from the carton pack.

In an initial stage, combidome is designed as a packaging solution for non-carbonated soft drinks. The protective composite structure of the combidome carton is composed primarily of raw paperboard and polymers. At around 75%, paperboard is the main ingredient of this composite structure, and gives the carton stability. The inner polymer layers form a liquid barrier for the beverage; the outer layer keeps moisture out. Added to this is a thin aluminum layer, which protects the product from light, oxygen, and external odors. This means nutrients and vitamins in the aseptically filled beverages are retained for a long time, with absolutely no preservatives—and as long as the carton pack is left unopened, there is no need for refrigeration.

The combidome filling machine (photo below), is capable of filling up to 12,000 carton packs per hour.

Gopal Goyal often notes that it is the connections he made through membership in TAPPI that really helped launch his career. "I kept telling people that I have gotten more out of TAPPI than TAPPI has gotten out of me." Having joined back in 1985 while a graduate student in pursuit of an advanced degree in the pulp and paper field, Gopal attended his first TAPPI pulping conference and was deeply impressed with the depth and breadth of knowledge he found under a single roof.

"You could approach any of these experts and have a technical discussion, which helped me tremendously in focusing my graduate research," he said. That initial meeting led to nearly 30 years of active involvement, including an array of voluntary leadership positions. Since those early days, he has consistently found TAPPI to be a great venue for making connections with leading industry experts and establishing a global network of contacts. He also notes that the active volunteer role he pursues at TAPPI to this day helped him to develop and apply leadership and teambuilding skills at his job.
