Cascades Inc., Kingsey Falls, Que., Canada, reports that the company's Greenpac Mill LLC group manufactured its first roll of lightweight linerboard this past Monday at its new, ultra-modern containerboard mill in Niagra Falls, N.Y., USA (photo shows mill under construction). Greenpac is a corporation created by Cascades in partnership with the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Jamestown Container, and Containerboard Partners.
From the very beginning of the project in 2011, construction of the mill was entrusted to Norampac, a division of Cascades, and the startup took place on July 15, as planned, under the initial schedule for the project. Norampac is also responsible for the management of Greenpac's operations.
The state-of-the-art mill has created 118 jobs in the region. Considered as the most advanced in its category in North America, Greenpac produces a lightweight linerboard made of 100% recycled fiber, on a 328-in. machine (8.33 meters), with an annual production capacity of 540,000 tons.
"The start-up of this new mill is a proud moment for Cascades. Equipped with the most advanced technology, this machine will enable us to better meet the needs of our customers," said Marc-André Dépin, president and CEO of Norampac. "After two years of intensive construction activity, we are anxious for the opportunity to finally be able to demonstrate the possibilities of the quality products that we will be able to offer," he added.
Greenpac Mill was designed for optimal energy efficiency and with many automated operations. The water is treated and reused to reduce consumption as much as possible. In addition, the water treatment system generates gases that are used for steam production, to dry the paper.
"The Greenpac startup confirms Cascades' long term commitment in the containerboard sector, as well as our willingness to invest for the future," said Alain Lemaire, executive chairman of Cascades' board of directors. "Greenpac is the most important investment in the history of Cascades. It symbolizes the future of this company we founded nearly 50 years ago. Thanks to the audacity and leadership of the Norampac team, we are realizing a major project that will take our company to another level in packaging," Lemaire added.
According to Mario Plourde, president and CEO of Cascades, "in 2011, we announced our intention to orient our investments towards the modernization of our assets. Greenpac is the cornerstone of Norampac's strategic plan which, like the other Cascades groups, works towards providing the company with modern and competitive equipment."
Cascades and Norampac wish to thank all of their employees and suppliers who worked on this important project during the past few years. "Thanks to their efforts, the members of the Greenpac team have greatly contributed to the realization of a dream we have had for a very long time," Dépin noted. "We also want to thank our partners, namely the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Jamestown Container, and Containerboard Partners."
The company also wishes to underline the important contribution of several actors in the carrying out of this project, namely Metso, the State of New York, the Empire State Development, the City of Niagara Falls, The Niagara County Industrial Development Agency, the New York Power Authority, and the New York Department of Environment Conservation.
Now that the mill has successfully passed the crucial startup step, it will enter the ramp-up phase in which it will gradually increase its production until it reaches maximum production capacity. Partners, officials, and the media will be invited to an official opening ceremony which will take place at a later date.

The Newark Group, Cranford, N.J., USA, reports that Newark Recycled Paperboard Solutions' Wisconsin Paperboard Mill has received a Focus on Energy incentive in excess of $75,000 for energy efficiency from the state of Wisconsin. Newark Recycled Paperboard Solutions is a producer and converter of 100% recycled paperboard in the U.S. and Canada.
Utilizing Newark Operations Excellence, the Wisconsin Paperboard Mill set a goal to become as energy-efficient as possible. Newark plant engineers devised a strategy to improve the quality and formation of the paperboard product as well as to improve the tons per day, all while running at current energy levels.
Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's energy efficiency program, along with WE Energies, the state's largest energy provider, showed interest in Newark's sustainability project, especially since the Newark Wisconsin Paperboard Mill is one of the state's largest energy consumers.
"This was a large investment for us," said Chris Chappell, GM of the Newark Wisconsin Paperboard Mill. "Focus on Energy reviewed our paper machine improvement project to achieve energy savings and increased tons per day, agreeing it was an excellent energy efficiency project, and that it could qualify for incentive funding."
Dick Poppe, SVP for Newark Paperboard Mill, said that "receiving the check from Focus on Energy is a great achievement for everyone involved at our Newark Wisconsin Paperboard Mill." He added that "sustainability, both in our products and our facilities, is a major corporate focus. It was quite an accomplishment to be publicly recognized for our efforts."

UPM, Helsinki, Finland, reports that it is one of the first companies and its Changshu site in China the first ever paper mill to receive the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) registration in China. UPM had led the way in open and transparent environmental reporting in 2012 when UPM Fray Bentos pulp mill in Uruguay became the first non-European site ever to achieve the EMAS registration as a result of a pilot project between UPM, EU, Finnish Environmental Institute SYKE, the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, and Inspecta Certification.
"Transparency and openness with stakeholders are an essential part of our corporate responsibility worldwide. The EMAS registration and third-party verified reporting promote continuous improvement. The environmental impacts of pulp and paper production are known, and the industry is working on the whole life cycle to minimize the impacts further," said Kim Poulsen, EVP, Paper Business Group, Business Area Asia Pacific and Corporate Relations and Development.
Daniel Weiss from Adelphi, a project partner in the SWITCH ASIA EMAS Global China project, noted that "we're very pleased UPM has carried out the audit in China and are grateful that they have shared their valuable experience with us on how to implement EMAS Global in China. UPM truly is one of the frontrunners in this regard. EMAS Global China is a cooperation program under the SWITCH-Asia grant, funded by the European Commission. The project aims to promote sustainable production patterns across China by introducing EMAS.
Altogether, UPM's corporate EMAS registration and the respective environmental statement cover a total of 20 pulp and paper mills in Europe, China, and Uruguay. EMAS is a voluntary environmental management system for companies and other organizations to improve, evaluate, and report on their environmental performance on an annual basis.
The UPM EMAS statement includes a corporate part and a mill-supplement part. The corporate report includes group-level information and core indicators on, for example, energy and material efficiency. The mill supplements complement the corporate report by providing local information such as environmental targets and achievements. All data are verified by a third party.
UPM's achievements in providing comprehensive environmental information have been acknowledged by a number of external recognitions and awards. A highlight of 2012 was UPM being selected as the only forestry and paper company worldwide in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) and chosen as Supersector Leader in the Basic Resources sector for 2012-2013.

At this year's Glastonbury Festival in England, held the last week of June, French artist Olivier Grossetête's giant cardboard tower, at more than 18 meters high, was the main feature of the festival's Theatre and Circus area and was built completely from Smurfit Kappa (Ireland) corrugated boxes. Based on the iconic Glastonbury Tor (a hill in Glastonbury, Somerset, England, that features the roofless St. Michael's Tower and forms an iconic part of the local landscape), the tower was constructed with the aid of festival-goers young and old over the whole festival weekend under the instruction of Grossetête.
The tower is a progression of Grossetête's 2012 "roofless" program first seen in Ayrshire at the Burns an' a' that! Festival, and in Glasgow at the Merchant City Festival, that also used Smurfit Kappa boxes. The "roofless" street art towers that Olivier will build in the U.K. will all be rebuilt as part of a cardboard city he is creating in Marseilles in September 2013.
1,600 corrugated boxes were manufactured by Smurfit Kappa Barnstaple from B.C. twin wall, kraft exterior corrugated board, each measuring 480 x 240 x 960 mm. The boxes were supplied to Glasgow based organizers UZ Arts (who presented Grossetête and InSitu, the pan-European network that originally commissioned the project with support from The Arts Council of England).
Grossetête, 30, specializes in monumental sculptures constructed from everyday materials that provoke his audiences to reconsider the complexity and beauty of materials taken out of their intended practical context.
Patrick Sweeney GM of Smurfit Kappa Barnstaple, said that "if rock and roll is king, then corrugated is definitely the castle. The Tor Tower Olivier and the fans built was stunningly beautiful, immensely strong, and in keeping with Glastonbury's sustainable positioning, can of course be recycled in the normal waste recovery stream."

China's hunger for wood was less acute in 2012 than in the previous year. In particular, importation of softwood logs fell substantially from the record levels of 2011. Importation of lumber was also lower in 2012, but the decline was much less than that of logs, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly ( WRQ), Seattle, Wash., USA.
The biggest changes in log and lumber imports between 2011 and 2012 were the sharp decline of Russian log volumes crossing the Chinese border and the reduced lumber shipments from the U.S. to Chinese ports.
During the first four months of 2013, import volumes of both logs and lumber picked up and were 12% and 19% higher, respectively, than in the first quarter of 2012.
The housing sector, a major consumer of imported lumber, has been strong in early 2013, and prices for new houses in 70 cities rose on average by more than 4% in April, up from 3.1% in March, 2013, according to national statistics.
So far this year, the housing construction sector has outperformed better than the manufacturing, trade, investment, and personal consumption sectors. North America is a major supplier of softwood products to China, with the market share for lumber and logs in the first quarter of 2013 accounting for 51% and 23%, respectively. In 2012, Canada and the U.S. exported logs and lumber valued at slightly more than $3 billion, which was down 23% from 2011.
During the first four months of this year, the import value for softwood logs and lumber from North America totaled $940 million, an increase of more than 30% from the same period in 2012. New Zealand's log-exporting companies continue to expand their presence in China. In 2012, New Zealand was the only country that expanded shipments when total Chinese log imports fell by 15%. Russia has for many years been the major log supplier to China, but in the first quarter of 2013, Russia and New Zealand both had a market share of close to 33% after year-over-year shipments were up almost 50% from New Zealand and down by 18% from Russia, WRQ reports.

CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries), Brussels, Belgium, has released its latest European pulp and paper industry statistics, which give a clear picture of the performance of the industry in 2012. These key statistics include data about production, consumption, and the trade of pulp, paper, and raw materials, as well as data concerning energy, environment, and social affairs. The statistics show that European pulp and paper production in 2012 continued to be affected by the economic slowdown that began in mid-2011.
Notably, performance of the European pulp and paper industry remains above other energy-intensive sectors in Europe. The industry is looking for a healthier supply and demand balance and is modernizing its industrial base to remain competitive. The overall output performance of all CEPI member countries during 2012 was similar to that of other major traditional paper producing world regions, such as the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. Only China and Brazil performed better.
CEPI members produced 92.1 million metric tons of paper and board in 2012, which represents a decrease of 1.6% over 2011. The pre-crisis production in 2008 totaled 97.9 million metric tons. Pulp production fell by 1.0% while the output of market pulp increased by 4.3%. Exports of paper and board outside of Europe showed an increase by 5.3% while imports fell by 9.7% compared with 2011. The overall consumption of paper and board in CEPI fell by 3.8% last year. In comparison, the overall GDP in Europe decreased by 0.3% in 2012, but it will recover in 2014 with a 1.4% increase (source: Eurostat – EU27).

Arctic Paper, Poznań, Poland, reportedly is planning to shut down PM 1 at its Mochenwangen paper mill in Germany. According to a report by Euwid Pulp and Paper, Germany, PM 1 is the smallest of the mill's three paper machines and produces mechanical book papers. The shutdown will eliminate 14 of the approximately 200 jobs at Mochenwangen.
Euwid was told by the mill's managing director, Lothar Burchardt, the company had to close down the machine because it needed to restructure the mill's portfolio. Not only is PM 1 the oldest machine, but with a width of 2.40 meters, it is also the least profitable of the production machines and should therefore be permanently shut down as quickly as possible, according to Burchardt. The equipment has been temporarily idled since June 11 and the affected employees have since been on a short-time work scheme with zero hours.
PM 1 can produce 15,000-18,000 metric tpy of mechanical book paper. Arctic Paper Mochenwangen will now produce this grade on the mill's other two paper machines, leading to a reduction in their output of improved newsprint. The two other paper machines have a combined capacity of around 100,000 metric tpy, according to Euwid.
The Mochenwangen mill was founded in 1868 by the Müller family and was bought by the Arctic Paper group in 2008. The mill has a long tradition of producing wood-containing bulky book paper and also produces a significant amount of offset paper as well as wallpaper base and specialty papers such as backer paper. The integrated mill operates a groundwood pulp mill and has a total paper production capacity of a120,000 metric tpy on three paper machines, including PM 1 that is being shut down.

Nigerian tissue producer Bel Papyrus Ltd, a member of the Boulos Group of Companies, has started up a new Toscotec (Italy) complete tissue production line at its Lagos, Nigeria, mill. The new Toscotec's line, with an average production of 23,000 metric tpy, includes an AHEAD-1.5S crescent former tissue machine with a single-layer headbox, a single press configuration, a steel yankee dryer (TT SYD-12FT), machine auxiliaries, a stock preparation plant for virgin pulp and for recycled paper (including deinking cells), a 2-loop washer system and a hot dispersion system, and the electrification starting from medium voltage cabinets and control system.
The supply contract also includes a steam generator, air compressors, and a three-unwind stand tissue slitter rewinder TT WIND-P with a calendering station and a jumbo reel wrapping machine. The machine design speed is 1,800 m/min. with a net web width of 2,850 mm. The project has been managed by Toscotec on an EPC (engineering and procurement) basis.
The new line, designed according to the Best Available Technology (BAT) for tissue production, will allow Bel Papyrus to guarantee its own requirements for the existing converting facilities and to consolidate its leading position in the West African tissue market (ECOWAS countries), raising the company's total production capacity above 45,000 metric tpy.
"Besides the long term and successful cooperation between our companies, the decisional factor for choosing Toscotec once again for this challenging project," said Riad Baloukji, managing director of Boulos Group of companies, "was its vocation to provide ‘state-of-the-art' equipment and realize complex ‘turn-key' projects worldwide."
Bel Papyrus' PM 1 (a sloped wire machine) and PM 2 (a MODULO Crescent former) were supplied by Toscotec in 1990 and 2004 respectively.
In addition to the above, Toscotec is currently studying on-site in Nigeria the layout of Paper Mill No. 4, expected to have a capacity of 28,000 metric tpy, and to start production in September 2015, which will further consolidate the position of the Group in tissue supply for the whole West African market, with a foreseen capacity of 75,000 metric tpy.

The Cham Paper Group, Switzerland, will sell its Italian paper mills in Carmignano and Condino to Delfort Group, Traun, Austria, and exit base paper production. Delfort Group produces and distributes specialty papers and has some 1,750 employees at five mills in Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Finland. Closing of the transaction is expected to occur in the fourth quarter of this year.
The transaction value (enterprise value) amounts to approximately EUR 86 million and includes financial liabilities of about EUR 45 million, which are to be taken over by the acquirer. The net purchase price will be paid in cash. As agreed by both parties, further details of the share purchase agreement will not be disclosed.
During the past few months, the board of directors of the Cham Paper Group has been evaluating strategic options which, after the comprehensive restructuring of the past 18 months, bring back sustainable growth to the specialty paper business. Integration of the two complementary Italian mills into the Delfort Group was found to be a promising option, the company said.
The Cham Paper Group activities in Switzerland are not affected by divestment of the Italian mills. Starting this year, industrial activities of the Group in Switzerland have been focused on the finishing (coating technology) of external base paper as well as development, commercial launch, and distribution of high-grade product groups and services. Also, the Group is planning to transform its 'Papieri' site in Cham into a new residential and working area.

Ence Energía y Celulosa, Spain, is participating in the alliance between the Biobased Industries Consortium (BIC)—cross-sector group made up of 48 large and small enterprises—and the European Commission to establish an unprecedented public-private partnership. With an investment of EUR 3,800 million, the purpose of this alliance is to expedite the development of biological-based products in Europe until 2020.
Through this public-private partnership (PPP) between the European Commission and the BIC of industries based on bioeconomy, the partnership aims to drive growth and employment in Europe, especially in rural areas, thanks to the investment in new sustainable forms of economic development.
As Ence explains, bioeconomy most notably offers new concepts such as biorefineries, which are the core of the biological-based economy. In this regard, unlike conventional fossil refineries that use raw materials, a finite fossil resource such as oil, biofineries use renewable and sustainable biomass and waste with possibilities of producing numerous everyday products, such as cellulose, foodstuff, animal feed, chemical products, and fuel.
In addition to replacing oil-based products for their biological-based equivalents, thanks to the intense R&D efforts that are being made, bioeconomy has a high potential for developing new products prepared with renewable raw materials, which take care of the environment and offer functionalities and potential.
To turn this potential into a reality, this PPP will capitalize on the innovation and technological leadership in Europe to offer biological-based solutions on a commercial scale. The sectors will meet to optimize and create new value chains by putting agriculture and the forestry sector in direct contact with consumers. Demonstration and expansion projects will be initiated through the EU member states, which will benefit from the new growth and employment opportunities.
Ence is a producer of eucalyptus pulp and the second largest in terms of sales. The company has more than 1,000 employees and generates more than 11,000 jobs in Spain, of which around 60% are related to forest management and are located in rural areas. Ence has a production capacity of more than 1,300,000 metric tpy of high quality eucalyptus pulp through its plants in Navia (Asturias), Pontevedra, and Huelva.

Mercer International Inc., Vancouver, B.C., Canada, reports that, after conducting a comprehensive assessment, its Celgar mill near Castlegar in British Columbia, Canada, intends to reduce its workforce to improve competitiveness with other pulp producers. The planned reduction will affect both hourly and salaried employees. The workforce reduction is expected to involve approximately 85 employees over the next five years, with the majority of employees to be affected over the next 12 months.
This action is being taken to substantially reduce fixed costs by bringing personnel levels more in line with other mills operating safely and productively around the world, Mercer notes. "It is essential for the long term viability and sustainability of the Celgar mill that it maintains a competitive cost structure compared to other producers in the face of ever increasing costs and other challenges. A competitive cost structure is also essential to attract the necessary investment capital required to continue to modernize the mill and participate in growing bio-economy opportunities," says Mercer's President and CEO Jimmy Lee.
The Celgar mill will continue to operate with an annual capacity of approximately 520,000 air-dried metric tons of market northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp and plans to employ approximately 370 employees when the workforce reduction is completed at the end of 2017.
Celgar will take appropriate measures to assist employees affected by the workforce restructuring in accordance with applicable agreements, policies, and legislation, and offer early retirement incentives for senior employees, the company says.
Mercer operates three modern NBSK pulp mills in Germany and Canada with a consolidated annual production capacity of approximately 1.5 million metric tons and currently employs approximately 1,500 people.

Mitsubishi HiTec Paper Europe, a German subsidiary of Mitsubishi Paper Mills Ltd., Japan, says that it takes the protection of the climate and environment seriously. New measures have been taken at the company's Flensburg, Germany, mill that will reduce CO2 emissions by 84%. This has led to the company becoming a new member of the German "Wirtschaft pro Klima" initiative.
The energy management system of ISO 50001 includes energy efficiency projects that form the key aspects of Mitsubishi HiTec Paper's company policy. The introduction of chemical flocculation of wastewater from the coaters before indirect discharge has led to a significant reduction in the specific power consumption from 8.5 to 1.3 kWh/m³ at the Flensburg mill.
Annual savings of 239,000 kWh is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption of 70 average German households. This means the specialty paper producer has reduced CO2 emissions by 84% (source: German electricity mix 2012).
The "Wirtschaft pro Klima" initiative brings together German companies that are actively committed to protecting the climate. A commitment by senior management is the basis. In addition to this, members will have already taken at least one measure by which they have reduced CO2 emissions by 20% or more. They must also intend to take further action in the future, to further reduce CO2 emissions to reach the 2 degree target of the U.N. Climate Change Conference 2010.
The roughly 700 employees at Mitsubishi HiTec Paper Europe produce high-quality thermal papers (thermoscript), digital imaging papers (jetscript), carbonless papers (giroform), and label papers (supercote) at two locations in Bielefeld and Flensburg, Germany.

Locals 92 and 306 of the Communications Energy and Paperworkers (CEP) Union, Ottawa, Ont., Canada, and Resolute Forest Products‘ (Montreal, Que.) reached an agreement for manning Resolute's Fort Frances Division No. 7 paper machine for up to 8-12 weeks starting yesterday, Wednesday, July 17. Resolute had laid off almost 240 staff and unionized employees in Fort Frances, Ont., on February 14 due to curtailment of the kraft mill and one paper machine.
CEP National Representative Stephen Boon said that "we are pleased to see more than 40 CEP members in Fort Frances get recalled for up to two or three months when No. 7 paper machine restarted, but some serious concerns arose due to the temporary nature of this recall. Resolute required the manning to run No. 7 machine, but many of our laid off members have also found part-time and full-time alternate employment since February while waiting to see how the Fort Frances operations might be repositioned over the next year.
Boon added that "we could not agree to force a laid off member to quit a new job to come back to the mill for temporary work and so through ongoing discussions with Resolute, both CEP Locals have now negotiated a recall protocol for manning the No. 7 paper machine that not only confirms all provisions of the contract apply for this re-start, but it also ensures the recall option for our laid off members is voluntary and does not negatively impact their seniority, future recall rights, or severance entitlements.

Newark Recycled Paperboard Solutions, Cranford, N.J., USA, this week announced a plan to strengthen its capabilities. Frank Papa, CEO and president, said that "Newark continues its dedicated focus on quality, sustainability, and better ways to service our customers. On the heels of a strong performance last fiscal year, we're making the decision to reinvest in several operations. We strategically developed a plan to improve the utilization of our people and assets and most importantly, provide quality products and services in areas where our customers reside."
As a better mechanism to service Northeast regional and Central Ohio customers, Newark is going to strengthen its capabilities in Franklin, Ohio, and Milwaukee, Wis., and consolidate the Northeast facilities. The Franklin facility currently produces laminated panels, spines, and floor protection products. It will take on a larger footprint as tube and core manufacturing will be added.
As well as doubling the Franklin operations, Newark is increasing converting capabilities at Milwaukee in the area of laminated panels for book and loose-leaf customers. The Greenville, Pa., facility will be consolidated into the Franklin facility.
Newark has several operations in the Northeast. Its Chicopee, Mass., operation will become the primary facility for the Northeast and will continue producing top quality tubes and cores. The Lawrence, Mass., facility will be consolidated into the Chicopee operation.
"It makes economic sense and provides a strong platform to support our valued Newark customers," said Papa. "These changes mark another step in Newark's continued vision to move our manufacturing where we can best serve our customers. Stora Enso Narew in Ostroleka, Poland, has successfully started up its new Voith (Germany) supplied PM 5. Along with installation and startup, various services such as mill consulting and total roll management were part of the delivery.
The DuoFormer Base II installed provides for very good sheet formation, Voith notes, adding that thanks to its proven multilayer technology, the gap former ensures excellent CD basis weight profiles for packaging paper. A highlight of PM 5 is the DuoDry CC installed for the first time. What is special here is that this drying concept effectively reduces curl. The basic idea is a vertically inverted single-tier dryer group that functions as the last group. Substantial thermal energy is saved thanks to this setup.
The VariFlex winder is also part of the delivery. Equipped with an automatic splice system, it was able to process the paper machine's jumbo reel spools at a maximum operating speed of 2,800 m/min in a test run without any problem. The whole capacity of the paper machine can be handled in a safe and effective manner with only one VariFlex winder.
For Stora Enso Narew, it was important to build up a competent team at the location that can operate as independently as possible in the areas of production and maintenance. Through its Mill Consulting Service package, Voith can provide support at this point and continuously train the local team. Stora Enso Narew thus ensures itself a year of quick and direct access to Voith's knowledge and network of experts.
With a wire width of 8,600 mm, PM 5 produces around 455,000 metric tons of testliner and fluting annually in a basis weight range of 65-140 gsm. Its operating speed is 1,600 m/min. The location was taken over by Stora Enso a few years ago and is mainly used for supplying paper to its own group for the production of corrugated board paper.

Georgia-Pacific, Atlanta, Ga., USA, this week introduced the newest member of its Angel Soft® family—Angel Soft Facial Tissue. Toyota Material handling, USA Inc. (TMHU), Irvine, Calif., USA, this week unveiled its new 8-Series lift trucks designed to meet applications associated with the pulp and paper industry. The new lift trucks, which offer 8,000 – 15,500 lb lifting capacities, also include a new 12,000 lb standard counterweight, box car and paper roll special option. Powering the new lift trucks is a newly designed 3.7-liter, 4-cylinder engine built by Toyota Industries Corp.
The new 8-Series standard, box car, and paper roll models offer several features specific to the paper handling industry. To meet the paper industry's need for damage-free roll handling with maximum efficiency, factory-installed paper roll clamps are available in a wide range of configurations to handle multiple diameters, weights, and types of paper. To ensure proper operation, a clamp release interlock system built into the control valve works to help prevent accidental activation of the release lever. In addition, an automatic clamp leveling feature allows the operator to quickly level the clamp vertical to the paper roll with the touch of a button.
Toyota's paper roll special model offers a shortened wheelbase, load distance, and right angle stacking. These dimensional changes make the paper roll special lift truck more nimble and compact to maneuver in and out of the tight spots found inside of rail cars and in confined work environments around paper mills. The new 8-Series paper roll special counterweight is built with a cast iron enclosure specially shaped to reduce paper roll contact. This design modification provides a number of lift truck benefits including: better weight distribution, a lower center of gravity, and improved truck stability.
A number of improvements increase the lift truck's cooling performance to keep the engine running at optimal temperatures, including integrating an externally mounted hydraulic oil cooler, increasing the radiator size by 55% to provide a larger cooling surface for heat dissipation, a larger diameter cooling fan, and developing a cast iron rear frame that creates a wind tunnel effect to optimize heat extraction from the engine compartment. Additionally, a new engine protection system works to automatically reduce the engine's output if the coolant temperature rises to potentially damaging levels. Fully stamped steel plate side panels, plate-iron front tire fenders, and water-resistant electrical connectors are all designed to increase productivity when working in adverse weather conditions and corrosive applications. An accumulator option significantly reduces shock loading which, in turn, works to increase the life of mast and attachment components and lower the likelihood of product damage associated with poor warehouse floor conditions, Toyota notes.
The 8-Series' gas engine is 20% more fuel efficient than the previous V6 engine used. Also, in designing the 8-Series lift truck line, ergonomic improvements were made to the floor space, entry step, operator seat, curvilinear overhead guard, and LPG tank bracket. Newly designed operator assist grips accommodate operators of all sizes, while a four-way adjustable full suspension seat with anti-cinch seat belt mechanism allows operators to choose their ideal position to work comfortably. The new lift trucks also feature Toyota's System of Active Stability™ (SAS), which helps reduce the likelihood of lateral and longitudinal tip-overs. In addition, a standard technician programmable travel speed control system allows plant managers to limit the top speed of the truck without reducing performance of the hydraulic functions.

The increase, effective with shipments beginning August 1, is primarily in response to increases in recycled paperboard prices and other external costs, the company notes.
Caraustar is one of North America's largest integrated manufacturers of 100% recycled paperboard and converted paperboard products. It serves the four principal recycled boxboard product end-use markets: tubes and cores; folding cartons; gypsum facing paper; and specialty paperboard products.

IEEE Spectrum author and noted researcher Dr. Andrew Steckl will provide the opening presentation at the upcoming Building Electronics on Paper Workshop, August 6-7 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI., USA. Based at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Steckl revealed the following in the IEEE magazine about paper as a substrate for displays and microfluidic systems:
- With the right set of additives and manufacturing processes, paper can take on a seemingly endless range of properties. It can be made hydrophilic or hydrophobic, porous or watertight, opaque or nearly transparent, delicate or strong, coarse or about as smooth as glass.
- It is possible to fabricate reliable pixels on coated paper with switching times as short as 10 milliseconds - nearly suitable for video. Paper-based displays using electrowetting might be ideal for smart labels on packages that could, for example, show videos about how the product is to be used, or for displays containing vital information for soldiers in the field—that can be rapidly destroyed if necessary.
- Researchers are now trying to develop a general class of paper-based microfluidic systems that can be adapted to make a variety of different tests, for such tasks as monitoring liver function or diagnosing tuberculosis. If done right, these tests could be compact, self-contained, and extremely affordable.

Make plans to attend the 2013 Building Sciences Committee Fall Meeting September 18-20.
The Building Sciences Committee has designed a strong technical program for production managers and engineers to provide firsthand knowledge to improve their fiberglass mat process with practical production-targeted papers.
This year's program will include papers on: Process Variation Reduction, Glass Sizing Basics; Burner Safety and Efficiency; Biological Treatment Case Study, Operator and Mechanical Training to Enhance Operational Effectiveness; IT Systems to Manage Roll Goods and Reduce Waste.
We are pleased that Tim Worms of 3M will return by popular demand to present his updated Roofing Market Overview and Forecast.
The meeting will be held at The Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort in Marco Island, Fla. USA. TAPPI has negotiated a very economical room rate of $109.00 per night per guest. A somewhat lighter coverage is given to 10 other QCS measurements that do not have such a broad installation base. Common issues that impact all sensors are explained, including how sensor performance is measured and reported, the impact of scanning processes, filtering, scanner designs and construction, and sensor calibration and correlation. Statistical methods are covered in depth from discrete one-dimensional variability to multi-dimensional variability. Guidance is provided for using these statistical methods to locate the sources of variability in the paper process.
