 Georgia-Pacific, Atlanta, Ga., USA, maker of Brawny® paper towels, recently surpassed $1.4 million in donations to Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP), Jacksonville, Fla., after the brand's second national donation-matching campaign and largest corporate social responsibility initiative to-date. WWP is a national organization dedicated to fostering the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history.Proceeds raised by the campaign help wounded veterans transition to civilian life through 19 WWP unique programs and services ranging from economic empowerment to mental health care.
"Beyond the products we make, we want to have a strong impact in our communities, which is why we partnered with Wounded Warrior Project," said Lanier Thomas, director of marketing, Brawny paper towels. "With humility, we give a million thanks to WWP and our veterans as we celebrate the true power of humanity's strength."
Brawny brand donations to WWP have come in the form of $500,000 given directly to the organization the past two years plus $250,000 through ongoing retail activation. Additionally, more than $650,000 has been donated $1 at a time when consumers "Liked" the Brawny Towels Facebook page, wrote a note of thanks to veterans on Facebook, or texted "THANKS" to 272969. The brand's custom Facebook tab gives consumers a place to show their support for veterans.
The Brawny brand increased awareness of WWP through custom packaging, social media, in-store point-of-sale, online advertising, as well as on television. In addition, numerous wounded veterans across the nation shared their stories through a variety of live events and media opportunities.
Although this year's donation goal has been met, the Brawny brand is continuing to empower consumers to support the everyday heroes who keep our nation strong. To do so, the brand will continue to match consumer-generated donations through the end of the year. The brand also has plans to deepen its commitment to our nation's injured service members by extending its partnership with WWP into 2014.
"It is our mission to welcome injured heroes back home and assist them and their families through their difficult transitions," said Jonathan Sullivan, EVP of Development for WWP.  E-paper displays like Kindles use such an extremely low amount of power that just brushing your hand across their surfaces could be enough to power them in the future, according to a GigaOM (San Francisco, Calif., USA) article this week by Signe Brewster. A Disney Research team, Brewster reports, has developed flat, flexible power generators that can be incorporated into sheets of paper, plastic, or other common materials, allowing people to generate electricity in novel ways.The team sandwiched materials such as Teflon between sheets of another conductive material. When rubbed, the materials generate an electric current that can power an electronic device.
The article quoted Interaction Group Director Ivan Poupyrev on the potential for this phenomenon. "Though the fundamental principles of operation remain the same, it's possible to build paper generators that respond to a number of different gestures, such as tapping, touching, rubbing, or sliding. We can imagine any number of ways to use this to add sights, sounds, and other interactivity to books and other printed materials inexpensively and without having to worry about power sources."
The devices can be built in less than five minutes, the article notes. A regular printer can be loaded with conductive ink, allowing it to print out the sheets of conductive material. They generate a very low amount of power, which means they are only suited to low-power devices.
"It's very simple, it's flexible, and it's printable using conventional printers," Disney team member Mustafa Karagozler explained in the article. "It's a technology with potential applications we've only begun to explore."

 The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) this past week announced winners of the fourth European Paper Recycling Awards. The LowEnergyFlotation (LEF) from Voith (Germany) was the winner of the "Technology Improvement and R&D" category. The well-attended ceremony took place at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.The LEF is a milestone for an energy-efficient flotation. "This is an innovation that significantly reduces the energy requirements needed to remove printing ink from paper fibers," explains Product Manager Reinhard Bluhm.
The newly developed injectors are at the heart of the LEF. Together with the modified pumps, they enable energy consumption to be reduced by up to 50% in the flotation. Subsequently, paper mills not only save energy but also achieve significant financial savings. The LEF technology has already been applied in more than 10 systems worldwide.
The winner of the second category "Information and Education" was the Alcorcon municipality in Spain. Their project improves paper and board collection by distributing paper bins in all schools in the district. The project aims to increase both the amount of paper collected as well as the environmental awareness among children.
In her speech, ERPC Chairperson Beatrice Klose stressed the role of the recycling awards."The European Paper Recycling Awards recognize innovative approaches to paper recycling, which is a daily act, familiar to all. It is our pleasure to highlight a few of those efforts that merit wider recognition and visibility," she added.

The Coalition for Transportation Productivity (CTP), Washington, D.C., USA, a group of 200 shippers and allied associations dedicated to safely and responsibly increasing the federal vehicle weight limit on interstate highways, this past week announced that CTP member International Paper (IP), Memphis, Tenn., testified before a key Congressional panel that the Safe and Efficient Transportation Act would safely modernize federal truck weight requirements by allowing states to grant interstate access to six-axle trucks weighing up to 97,000 lb. According to a report by Trucker.com (Trucker News Service), in prepared testimony before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Panel on 21st Century Freight Transportation, Tom Kadien, SVP of consumer packaging for IP, said that SETA would enhance the safety and productivity of International Paper's truck shipments while minimizing fuel use and impact on the environment.
"Allowing heavier loads to move on safer and more appropriate six-axle trucks will give states the ability to optimize road networks, while allowing trucks to incorporate safer Interstate highways into their routes," Kadien said in his prepared testimony. "Six-axle trucks with weights equal to or more than those allowed by SETA are in wide use by our global competitors in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Heavier trucks are supported by a wide body of research from state, federal, international, and academic institutions."
In his prepared remarks, Kadien also expressed support for the ongoing U.S. Department of Transportation study of more productive truck configurations—including the SETA configuration—and pointed out that SETA is already supported by a full body of research. "We are confident that the team at DOT is developing a balanced report that will support other previous positive safety research on this topic," he said. "We believe that, when the time comes to pass the next highway and surface transportation authorization bill, the record will continue to be clear that SETA should be included. The time to act on sensible and safe truck weight reform is now."
IP is one of the nation's leaders in freight movement, spending approximately $2 billion annually on logistics. SETA would present an opportunity for the company to increase trucking efficiency by 20% for 300,000 of its truck trips each year, while still maintaining safety standards. If, after congressional passage of SETA, the state of Oklahoma opted into the configuration, Kadien said one IP mill could eliminate more than 5,000 annual truck trips.

Recovered paper pricing held steady across bulk and almost all grades at U.S. mills, according to a report earlier this week, October 7, by PPI Pulp & Paper Week, San Francisco, Calif., USA.
While export pricing to China in the last month increased $2- $4 on old corrugated containers (OCC), and $8-10 on mixed paper and old newspapers (ONP), there was enough supply so that U.S. mills paid no across-the-board price hikes on any material as of October 7, vs levels on September 5, PPI Pulp & Paper Week reported. No change was reported for U.S. mills on OCC, ONP, and mixed paper. OCC was $115-$125/ton. Mixed office paper (MOP) was $125-$135/ton in the U.S. East, with a high of $155 in the Northeast/New York section.

Harvests of timber in Europe have remained practically unchanged for three years at around 370 million cubic meters annually, according to the UNECE. A closer look at the timber harvest trends for Central Europe the past 10 years reveals the interesting development that the average annual harvests in the "Central West" region (Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland) were 15% higher in the five years between 2003 through 2007 than between 2008 and 2012. according to the Wood Resource Quarterly (www.woodprices.com) (WRQ), Seattle, Wash., USA. .
During the same period, timber removals in the "Central East" region (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia) increased 4%, and this region now harvests more than the "Central West," a reversal from the historical position when more timber was removed in the western countries, WRQ reports.
Not only has log production fallen in the "Central West" region the past five years, but so has log consumption by the forest industry, which was down on average 9% during the 2008-2012 period, compared with 2003-2007. In the "Central East," log consumption fell only 2% during the same time period.
The log trade flow in Central Europe has changed the past decade with the "Central West" region having become a larger net importer of logs the past five years, compared with the previous five-year period, and the "Central East" region exporting more logs the past few years than prior to this time. The biggest change occurred in Germany, which traditionally had been a net exporter of logs, but became a net importer in 2009. During the first five months of 2013, Germany was a net importer of two million cubic meters of softwood logs, which can be compared with net exportation of 1.6 million cubic meters just five years ago.
Sawlog prices in Germany and the neighboring Czech Republic have followed each other fairly closely the past 15 years, however at different levels, the WRQ points out. In the 1990s, average sawlog prices in the Czech Republic were approximately 60% of the German prices, while during the past few years this level has reached 80%.

Eurovast, Italy, has ordered from Toscotec, Italy, a new tissue line for its Cartiera della Basilica Lugliano-Bagni di Lucca (LU) mill. The new machine will have a maximum production capacity of more than 30.000 metric tpy and a width at the winder of 2,800 mm. It will start up in the first quarter of 2014.
Eurovast, managed by the Romano family and headed by entrepreneur Vincenzo Romano, has been active in the tissue market since the early 1990s. The company currently has a production capacity of more than 70,000 metric tpy, with a total plant surface area of 36,000 square meters (three paper production plants and two processing plants located in the Lucca region in Bagni di Lucca, Villa Basilica, Lanciole, Capannori, and Borgo a Mozzano).
The company introduced its Rotolotto® brand to the market in 1994. Rotolotto is the first single roll tissue (typical of the industrial sector) for domestic use. For Eurovast, this product was the driving force for growth and expansion that continues today with a complete range that includes the Fior di Carta® and Fior di Carta Lifestyle® brands.
The new Toscotec line includes a MODULO plus crescent former in double press configuration and a steel yankee dryer TT SYD-3200MM with a maximum speed of 1,500 m/min. The machine will be installed at the existing site following dismantling of the existing machine. Engineering services, assembly supervision, commissioning, and startup will be handled by Toscotec.
Eurovast notes that the new investment will ensure continuation of the growth process that begun in 2007, allowing the company to adopt new papermaking systems aimed at improved paper quality. For example, the purchase in 2008 and 2011 of new machinery for the paper transformation-converting plant led to an improvement in product quality and aesthetics.

Honeywell, Morris Township, N.J., USA, announced yesterday that it has been selected to provide the process control system for a new pulp mill under construction in the Chita region of southeast Russia—the first greenfield pulp mill to be built in Russia in 35 years. Built and operated by Russian North Star Pulp Industrial Complex LLC, but wholly owned by Chinese firm Heilongjiang Xingbang International Resources Investment Co., the new pulp mill will use Honeywell's Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS) to run plant operations.
The new mill will have an annual capacity of 230,000 metric tons of unbleached market pulp when fully operational. Startup is expected in mid-2015.
The entire output of the mill will be exported to China to meet the growing demand for paper goods there, including construction material, packaging, and other products. Consumption of paper-based goods in China continues to rise at a rate of around 10% a year and is expected to reach 115 million metric tons in 2015. The new pulp mill project is one result of efforts for greater cooperation between Russia's Chita region and the neighboring Heilonhjiang province of China.
"Having efficient control systems in place helps improve production performance several times over, so we put a great emphasis on choosing the right ones. Honeywell's Experion PKS fully meets our requirements in terms of energy efficiency, reliability, and safety," said Yang Guangwen, chief engineer and vice general manager, North Star Pulp Industrial Complex. "In addition, Honeywell has offices in Siberia and in China, which will make our collaboration easier."
Honeywell's Experion® PKS will be installed in all of the mill's major process areas including wood preparation, pulping, and drying, as well as the chemical recovery and combined heat and power plant.
"Honeywell has the innovative technologies and the depth of experience in the pulp and paper industry to meet North Star Pulp Industrial Complex's need for a highly productive and efficient pulp mill," said Jarmo Kosunen, program director for Honeywell Process Solutions. "Our technology will manage every main process in the mill, improving productivity, process reliability, and helping to prevent unplanned shutdowns."

Metsä Tissue, part of Metsä Group, Finland, this past week inaugurated its renewed paper mill in Krapkowice, Poland. The EUR 55 million-plus investment program was started three years ago and is the largest in Metsä Tissue's history. The investment includes two new state-of-the-art tissue paper machines, a new away-from-home product converting line, as well as extending the converting and warehousing to new, logistically effective facilities. The investment increases the mill's tissue production capacity up to 85,000 metric tpy and converting capacity up to 50,000 metric tpy.
"The renewed Krapkowice mill is the most modern tissue facility in Europe. This investment is strategically important to Metsä Group as it strengthens our market position and competitiveness in the Polish tissue market. Today's consumers want sustainably manufactured, high-quality hygiene products. Our Polish mill meets these expectations extremely well," said Kari Jordan, president and CEO, Metsä Group.
"Metsä Tissue is seeking strong growth in Poland and nearby markets where the demand for new tissue products is increasing significantly. With this large scale investment, Metsä Tissue can enhance its productivity and energy efficiency in tissue production to a world-class level," said Mika Joukio, CEO, Metsä Tissue.
By utilizing the best available technology, Metsä Tissue has reduced the mill's carbon dioxide emissions by 60%, NOx emissions by more than 50%, and has virtually eliminated SOx emissions. Due to the major improvements in water usage and treatment, the amount of waste water has been reduced by 42%.
The Krapkowice mill produces Metsä Tissue's top brands—Lambi, Mola, and Katrin—for both consumer and away-from-home markets. The mill uses both virgin and recycled fiber. Metsä Tissue has applied for environmental labels, such as the EU Flower and the Nordic Eco-label, for all of the mill's products. Metsä Tissue has been operating in Poland since 1997 and has some 250 employees

Due to excess capacity in the coated mechanical market, Norske Skog Walsum will from the second half of December temporarily idle paper machine (PM) 4. The machine has an annual capacity of 225 000 tons. Walsum's second paper machine, PM 10, will continue to produce LWC (Light Weighted Coated) magazine paper at an annual capacity of 200 000 tons.
"The temporary idling of capacity at the Walsum mill in Germany is required to both create a better balance between demand and supply, and to avoid unprofitable production at Walsum. Despite years of great efforts of the staff to reduce costs, the decision is unfortunately unavoidable," said Sven Ombudstvedt, CEO and president of Norske Skog.
Customers will be served from other Norske Skog mills and paper machines. All existing supply commitments will be honored, according to Norske Skog.

Norske Skog, Norway, has agreed to sell its Singburi mill in Thailand to a Thai industrial group for a total price of $33 million. The transaction is part of an already communicated strategy to improve Norske Skog's financial position. The new owner plans to continue producing newsprint at the mill.
"The divestment is part of our strategy to improve Norske Skog's cash flow and financial position. We are very pleased to be able to sell the operations in Thailand to a buyer with long-term plans for the mill, says Sven Ombudstvedt, president and CEO of Norske Skog.
The Singburi mill has a total newsprint production of approximately 125 000 metric tpy, and is the sole producer of newsprint in Thailand. The mill has 239 employees.
The transaction will have limited operational impact on the rest of Norske Skog. The financial and operational closing of the transaction is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of this year. The transaction will give a small financial gain, and the final accounting effects will be disclosed in the 2013 fourth quarter financial statements, the company notes.

PMP Group, Poland, reports that it has successfully completed a tissue machine press section rebuild for Kimberly-Clark-Taiwan. The main goals of the project, including increasing PM 1 operating speed and eliminating vibration in the existing press frame, were fully achieved, the company says. PMP's scope of supply included exchanging the entire press frame, new suction roll, auxiliary systems, erection, and engineering supervision.
In 2000, Kimberly-Clark bought virtually all of Taiwan's S-K Corp. The move made K-C one of the largest manufacturers of consumer packaged goods in Taiwan. The company later purchased Taiwan Scott Paper Corp. for about $40 million and merged the two companies, forming Kimberly-Clark Taiwan.

Since the autumn of 2012, SAPPI Maastricht, The Netherlands, has been using an energy-efficient Voith qDry Pro concept for non-contact drying. Peter Pijpers, manager of Process Technology and Engineering at Sappi Maastricht, reports that he is "delighted" with the increase of energy efficiency. "Almost directly after startup, the savings were visible, and after only a few weeks, the savings exceeded our expectations." The gas savings amount to approximately 50%.
To avoid deposits on the turning rolls after the last applicator unit and thus color defects on the paper, the turning rolls were replaced with an HCB-Turn. The HCB-Turn allows contactless web turning, while ensuring energy-efficient hot air drying of the coated web at the same time.
Broke has been reduced thanks to this rebuild. Also, the HCB-Turn allows higher final moisture while maintaining coating quality.
At the same time, the energy savings mentioned above were made possible by the qDry Pro concept, a combination of the HCB-Turn with the existing Voith InfraAir infrared dryers. The infrared dryers were modified and thermically connected to the HCB dryer. Thus, the HCB-Turn is now heated completely by the waste heat of the infrared dryers.
SAPPI Fine Paper Europe has a production capacity of 3.7 million metric tpy of fine paper and 1.1 million metric tpy of pulp. PM 6 at SAPPI Maastricht produces woodfree coated paper and board in a basis range of 180–400 gsm. The working width of PM 6 is 4,300 mm. Its operating speed is 850 m/min.

SCA, Stockholm, Sweden, reports that the complete prospectus for its public cash offer for the Chinese tissue company Vinda was published and distributed this past Monday, October 7. In connection with publishing of the prospectus, the acceptance period for Vinda's shareholders commences, the company notes.
Earlier last month (September 9) SCA announced that it was planning to make a cash offer for Vinda.

Shin-Ei Paper, Japan, has ordered form Andritz, Graz, Austria, two tissue machines with steel yankees for its mill in Fuji city. The machines, which will be used for producing high-quality tissue from recycled fiber, are scheduled to start up at the beginning of 2015.
The new PrimeLineCOMPACT machines are designed for speeds of 1,800 m/min with paper widths of 2.8 m. They will be equipped with PrimeDry Steel Yankees to achieve high drying capacity at minimal energy costs.
Satoshi Kurosaki, president of Shin-Ei Paper, said that "Doh-Ei Paper, one of our group's companies, replaced a cast iron yankee with an Andritz Steel Yankee in 2012. As promised, higher drying capacity and energy savings were achieved. During the tender phase for the two new tissue machines, we had a lot of constructive discussions with Andritz engineers and they proposed various possibilities to improve the production efficiency."

Coldwater, Atlanta, Ga., USA, this week announced the successful startup of a new edge control system at April Symbol BM 11 in Shandong Province, China.
BM 11 is a bleached board machine running liquid container packaging. The FabCurl Edge Control System was installed on the mid ply of BM 11 and, after startup, instant results were seen in machine cleanliness, TSO angle reduction, basis weight, and moisture profile 2 sigma reduction, Coldwater reports.
Coldwater has more than 200 global installations of FabCurl Edge Control Systems.The products are manufactured and supported from both the U.S. and Sweden.

 Iggesund Paperboard's new biofuel boiler in Workington, England, came online earlier this year. By switching its energy source from fossil natural gas to biomass, the company has permanently eliminated annual fossil carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to those from more than 65,000 cars, each driven 20,000 km a year. In addition to now being self-sufficient in electricity and heat, Iggesund Paperboard also expects to supply both green electricity and heat to the nearby town of Workington.Iggesund Paperboard in Workington is the U.K.'s only producer of folding box board and has 400 employees. Incada, the paperboard made at the mill, is constructed of a middle layer made of mechanical pulp produced on site, which gives a low weight combined with high stiffness. The outer layers are made of a purchased chemical pulp to create high whiteness and good printability.
"Thanks to investments spanning more than a decade, Iggesund Paperboard has raised the standard of what was a very middle-of-the-road paperboard mill to one that is state of the art," says Ulf Löfgren (photo), the mill's managing director. "Including the 108 million pounds spent on the biofuel boiler, we have invested more than 200 million pounds in this transformation."
Step by step, the investments and renovations have raised both the quality and quality consistency of Incada. As a result, the mill has found new end uses for its product and gradually improved its profitability.
"In our investment in the new biofuel boiler, profitability and reduced climate impact go hand in hand," Löfgren continues. "We know that the cost of fossil-based energy will rise faster than that of biofuel, so we regard this investment as a way to stabilize our energy costs. At the same time, our emissions of fossil carbon dioxide from the production process will fall to almost zero, which should reasonably make us an even more interesting choice for the large end users who have more or less promised consumers that they will both declare and reduce the emissions created by the products they sell."

 At the 2013 European Carton Makers Association (ECMA) Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Ben Markens (see photo), president of the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), delivered a presentation on PPC's newly released Trends 2013 Industry Outlook and Market Data Report, the 2013 Business Sentiment Report to some 150-plus attendees. Markens described the results of, and discussed the legislative changes and challenges currently affecting, the North American paperboard packaging industry. Highlights from his presentation included the 1.2% increase in 2012 of North American folding carton shipments—an encouraging uptick after four consecutive years of decline. He also noted that based on a recent Business Sentiment survey, which tracks data from North American and European folding carton manufacturers, North American converters are significantly more hopeful about business growth than their European counterparts.
"It was an honor to be invited to present at ECMA again this year, said Ben Markens. "As our European counterparts in the industry, it is important that we learn about their latest advancements and what obstacles they are encountering, and share the latest trends we've observed here in North America."
Produced by RISI, Boston, Mass., USA, the Trends 2013 Industry Outlook and Market Data Report is organized into business conditions, folding carton industry forecasts, and the trends for 17 key end-use markets such as pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and dairy products. A summary of the report shows that, after four years of decline, 2012 saw the first positive growth in the folding carton industry—a 1.2% increase in tons shipped. While moderate growth is expected to continue through 2015, 2012 shipments still fell approximately 537,000 tons short of the total reached in 2007. Slow growth in tons of cartons shipped is expected to continue, averaging 0.8% per year between 2013 and 2017. Cumulative folding carton shipments remained 9.2% below the 2007 peak. Historically, carton demand has lagged approximately 2% behind overall growth in consumer spending on nondurable goods, a pattern that was fairly consistent throughout the macroeconomic cycles of the past decade. In 2008-09, folding carton shipments plummeted 6.6%, which was in line with the 3.0% decline in consumer spending on nondurables. However, in 2010-11, carton demand continued to decline 4.1% while nondurable spending increased 4.6%. The Great Recession's impact on the industry will be felt for years to come.
The U.S. economy continues its gradual return to growth, and consumer spending has increased at the fastest rate in more than two years. Consumer deleveraging, assisted by low interest rates, has reduced the household debt service ratio to its lowest point since 1980. Perhaps just as important as slow but marked increasing employment, household wealth has returned to the level just prior to the Great Recession, on the backs of a rebound in home prices and a seemingly unstoppable stock market.
Housing has finally started to rebound and is now one of the key drivers of the U.S. economy. For the first time since 2005, housing added to overall GDP growth and should continue to do so for the near to medium term. Housing starts have rebounded dramatically and prices have risen almost 10%, compared with the same time last year. With interest rates remaining low, affordability of homes remains near all-time highs. U.S. real GDP is expected to grow by 2.2% in 2013 and 3.3% in 2014.

The Pratt Industries mill on Staten Island, N.Y., USA, recently passed a major milestone, producing its five millionth ton of 100% recycled containerboard. The Pratt Paper PM 12 machine at Conyers, Ga., a sister machine to the Staten Island machine, has also passed a major milestone. In July, PM 12 produced its six millionth ton of 100% recycled containerboard.
Voith Paper was the supplier of the Staten Island 196-in.-trim gap former machine. The machine, designed in 1997 to produce 710 tpd, now produces 1,000+ tpd (monthly average) of 23 to 40 lb./1,000 sq. ft. of recycled linerboard and corrugating medium at speeds up to 3,200 fpm.
The 196-in. trim Voith Paper machine in Georgia, designed in 1995 to produce 720 tpd, today produces 1,000+ tpd (monthly average) of 23 to 56 lb./1,000 sq. ft. of recycled linerboard and corrugating medium at speeds up to 3,400 fpm.
To acknowledge these milestones, Voith presented both mills with a commemorative plaque. According to Allen Bowdler, GM of Pratt PM 12, "It was a pleasure to be part of the team that achieved the milestone of 6 million tons. This achievement was only made possible through the efforts of all people involved, past and present."

New Products
 Iggesund Paperboard, Sweden, reports that this autumn it is upgrading its folding box board Incada. The board will be whiter and lighter and also have a number of improved properties affecting printability. Incada Exel, which is more of a specialized packaging board, will also have improved stiffness, with a gain of up to 10% to 15% for grammages over 300 gsm."This enables our customers to reduce their packaging weights while keeping the same protection for the contents," explains Guy Mallinson, head of Iggesund's European sales.
The improved stiffness has also led to a revision of Incada Exel's grammage range to better suit the demands of the current customer base. Other distinct improvements have been made to the odor and taste properties so that Incada now comes in under the Robinson test's detection limit of 0.6. The whiteness improvement amounts to 7.5 units on the CIE scale and most of it lies in the L value, which is critical for color reproduction. Runnability is also improved so that Incada can function even better in customers' processes.
"Incada was introduced in 2001 and since then we've made many small quality improvements," Mallinson says. "This is a big leap forward and will definitely strengthen our market position."
The biggest change of all for Incada, though, has no effect at all on printability or the economy of customers' own processes, the company notes. Incada is manufactured at Iggesund Paperboard's mill in Workington. This spring, the mill changed its energy source from fossil natural gas to biomass, which is burned in a new combined heat and power plant. Overnight, the mill eliminated its fossil carbon emissions from more than 190,000 metric tpy to zero. The reduction is the equivalent of the annual emissions from more than 65,000 cars.
"This adds even more power to our sales message," Mallinson concludes. "Paperboard in general is a very sustainable packaging material. By changing our energy source and upgrading Incada, we are now at the summit of the folding box board market in terms of both product properties and sustainability."
The new Incada can be ordered this autumn with deliveries beginning in November.

UPM Raflatac, has introduced a range of next-generation labelstock products that offer fit-for-purpose performance for the main end-use segments. The Fit range combines increased production efficiency and sustainability credentials with no compromises on printing and dispensing performance.
Raflacoat Fit PEFC provides efficiency to high-volume food applications. The new PEFC-certified mid-gloss label face is sustainably sourced, and the thinner 63 ยตm in caliper yields up to 30% longer rolls, substantially reducing downtime during roll changes, the company notes. The labelstocks are equipped with adhesives for all food labeling temperatures, including the EU 10/2011 compliant next generation hotmelt RH 6 optimized for chilled conditions but equally capable in room temperatures. Raflacoat Fit PEFC is available with three liner options. The HG65 and HG45 glassine liners are PEFC-certified like the label face. The ProLiner PP30 option maximally reduces the labelstock thickness to increase productivity and to provide better performance in high-speed applications and humid conditions. Retail Eco Fit PEFC provides optimal performance in weigh-price and backroom applications and assures a crisp image for scanning at the cash register. Thermal Eco Fit PEFC is a fit-for-purpose solution for packaging films and most common cardboards in short-life labeling. Laminate structure in these two products is 17% thinner, meaning more labels per roll, 17% fewer roll changes, and possibility to move to longer reel lengths both in printing and in labeling. The HG45 liner is lighter than HG65, which results in 20% less liner waste and a comparable reduction in landfill costs, the company says. The label faces and glassine liners are PEFC-certified. The liner waste is 100% recyclable through UPM Raflatac's waste management concept RafCycle, leading to reductions in carbon footprint, liner waste, and landfill costs. UPM Raflatac explained that the environmental impact of the Fit products is based on comprehensive lifecycle assessments (LCA). The LCAs carried out at UPM Raflatac are performed in accordance with ISO 14014/44 and are consistent with the methodology used by many large brand owners to evaluate their own environmental impacts. ##SHARELINKS##

The Aspect Label and Release Papers product line, which includes pressure-sensitive face sheet, cut and stack label, and SCK release paper, leverages generations of Verso papermaking expertise to deliver specialty paper solutions that meet the stringent requirements of label customers.
The Aspect EDP Face Sheet product is an uncoated, high brightness, surface-sized free sheet paper suitable for impact and non-impact printing. It possesses an appealing combination of brightness and shade, resulting in enhanced bar code and human readable printing. The paper's physical properties provide the dimensional stability and strength required in the pressure-sensitive label converting process.

Iggesund Paperboard, Sweden, this week announced that its prices for both Invercote and Incada folding box board grades will go up in Europe as of mid-November. The increase applies to the entire product range, and will be EUR 70 per metric tonne or £60 per metric ton.
Iggesund Paperboard, a member of the Holmen Group, is a producer of virgin fiber paperboard for use in the packaging and graphics sectors.

Sonoco-Alcore S.a.r.l. Brussels, Belgium, this week announced that it will raise the prices for all of its tube and core related products, effective November 1. The price increase follows the company's recently announced coreboard increase of EUR 50 per metric ton in the European market that went into effect on October 1.
"The coreboard increase was needed due to the rising cost of energy, freight, and other materials involved in the manufacturing process. This increase has been accepted by the market, therefore our tube and core prices needed to reflect this change accordingly," said Adam Wood, VP, Sonoco-Alcore.
Sonoco-Alcore S.a.r.l., wholly-owned by Sonoco, Hartsville, S.C., USA, operates 29 tube and core plants and five paperboard mills in Europe.

Glatfelter, York, Pa., USA, this week announced the promotion of Kent K. Matsumoto to VP, general counsel, and corporate secretary, effective immediately. In this capacity, he will report directly to Dante C. Parrini, chairman and CEO.
In making this announcement, Parrini said that "during his seven-month tenure as the interim general counsel, Kent has demonstrated a track record of hands-on execution that has created value for the company and shareholders. His sound judgment, business acumen, and leadership skills are a great complement to the Glatfelter Senior Executive Team."
Matsumoto brings 28 years of diverse and global corporate, legal, and trade association experience to his assignment. He joined Glatfelter in June 2012 as assistant general counsel and quickly assumed the role as chief compliance officer as well as various assistant secretarial responsibilities. In March 2013, he was appointed interim general counsel for the company.
Prior to working at Glatfelter, Matsumoto served in a variety of corporate and divisional leadership assignments with firms such as Wolters Kluwer, Mayne Pharma, Alpharma, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. He also has worked for the Baltimore legal firms of Semes, Bowen, and Semes as well as Ober, Kaler, Grimes, and Shriver.
Matsumoto earned a B.A. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia and achieved his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School. His continued development includes executive education programs at Harvard and Columbia Universities. Matsumoto is admitted to practice law in Maryland and the District of Columbia (inactive) and is licensed as an in-house corporate counsel in Pennsylvania.

Three leaders have been elected to the independent Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI®) Board of Directors, to fill positions in each of its three chambers—Environmental, Social, and Economic. Jim Hannan, CEO and president of Georgia-Pacific, Atlanta, Ga., USA, was elected to fill a vacant seat in the Economic Chamber. Previously, Hannan served as G-P's president and COO after being promoted from EVP and chief administrative officer.
Hannan is a member of the board of the Atlanta Committee for Progress, the Atlanta History Center, The Commerce Club, The Center for Human and Civil Rights, Holy Innocents Episcopal School, and the Georgia Research Alliance, and serves as a Trustee of the Woodruff Arts Center and of the California State East Bay Educational Foundation. His industry board affiliations include American Forest & Paper Association (past chairman), National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), and Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). In July 2013, he was named the 2013 North American CEO of the Year by RISI.
Bob Matters, chair of the Steelworkers Wood Council, was elected to fill a seat in the SFI Board's Social Chamber. Jonathan Haufler was elected to fill a vacant seat in the SFI Board's Environmental Chamber.

Mikko Forsell, M. Sc. (Econ.), M. Sc. (Tech.), has been appointed Metsä Tissue's CFO and a member of Metsä Tissue's management team, effective Jan. 1, 2014. He will report to Mika Joukio, CEO, and will be located in Espoo, Finland.

Frank J. Sutman, Ashland Water Technologies, has been appointed by the TAPPI Nominating Committee and approved by the TAPPI Board to serve out the remaining time of a vacated board of directors seat. Frank will serve effective immediately through March 2015.  "We are extremely pleased to have someone with Frank's skills and broad range of experience to serve on our board of directors," said Larry N. Montague, TAPPI president and CEO. "His in-depth technical knowledge coupled with his strong leadership skills will be extremely valuable as we strive to offer TAPPI's members the best possible world class products and services." Sutman began his career in research with Great Northern Paper Co. and then served with Georgia-Pacific Corp./Great Northern Paper Co. as quality assurance supervisor and technical director. For 16 years, he was a senior research scientist with Hercules Pulp and Paper Division/BetzDearborn Paper Process Group/Betz Paperchem Inc. In 2006, he became a research fellow with Hercules, now Ashland Water Technologies in Wilmington, Del. In 2009, he assumed the role of senior group leader, focusing on specialty chemical functional and process solutions for papermaking applications. At TAPPI, Sutman has held several key leadership positions, including chairman of the Engineering Division, steering committee chair for PaperCon, and chairman of the Water Removal Committee. He is a past member of IPST's Recycle Elective Research Consortium Advisory Group and Papermaking PAC, and a former VP, North America, International Association of Scientific Papermakers. TAPPI honors include the Engineering Division Leadership and Service Award, and in 2010 he was named a TAPPI Fellow. He has published numerous technical papers and holds 10 patents. The TAPPI Microbiology and Microbial Technology committee has announced the next webinar in its series on Microbes in Papermaking. "Microbial Control: Protecting Mineral Slurries and Papermaking Additives from Spoilage" will be held on October 16 at 12:00 p.m. EST. The webinar will be hosted by Sherrill Gammon, Sr. Research Scientist in the Microbiology Group of Kemira Chemicals, and will focus on the challenges presented when protecting additives in storage against the growth of ever changing microorganisms. The preservation of mineral slurries and other additives for pulp and paper processes can be a challenge given the dynamic nature of the microorganisms, characteristics of individual biocides, and the chemistry of the products to be preserved. A review of microbial control in the world of white pigments and additives combining the tools of biocides, microbiology, monitoring, and housekeeping will be discussed to make the job of protecting these additives a little easier.  The Bleaching of PulpBy: Peter W. Hart and Alan W. Rudie Previous editions of The Bleaching of Pulp have provided comprehensive information on the technology used to bleach wood pulps. The 5th edition will continue this tradition as the premiere industry text on bleaching technologies but will be more focused on the modern industrial processes with less emphasis on fundamental science. New or more comprehensive sections are included on elemental chlorine free bleaching, enzymes, acid treatments for hexeneuronic acids, control of mineral scale, and multi-stage modeling as used to optimize bleaching among multiple stages. Do you have a history book gathering dust on your shelf? TAPPI's 100th year is coming soon and we are looking for donations to the TAPPI Library. Specifically, we are interested in histories of companies and mills in the paper and packaging industry (both producers and suppliers).
