General Announcements

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

Plans are already underway for the 100th Anniversary of TAPPI, which will be observed during the 2015 PaperCon Conference in Atlanta, April 19-22.2015.

As part of the celebration, TAPPI and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have invited ISO Technical Committee TC 6 and its subcommittees and working groups to hold its 2015 meeting during the PaperCon week.

To keep up with the 100th Anniversary plans, there's a special website: http://www.tappi100years.org. On this site you can also sign up for the special newsletter for this event.

This Spring, the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) and Quality and Standards Management Committee will both meet during PaperCon 2014, April 27-30 in Nashville.

PaperCon 2014, TAPPI’s largest annual event, focuses on new ways to run more profitably and stay competitive.   The Papermaking Program covers a number of topics guaranteed to give you great ideas to take back to the mill. Learn to optimize your machine(s) through innovations in web imaging systems, improving pressing efficiency, wet end optimization, and vacuum systems upgrades. The Coating & Graphic Arts Program focuses on the future of printing and its demands on paper and board coating.  In addition to mill manager and superintendent panels, the PIMA Management Program features sessions on reliability, training operators of the future, safety and lean manufacturing.  Register now for best rates.

Your registration to PaperCon also includes full access to these programs:

Tissue360° Forum, OpEx Reliability Workshop, RPTA P-T Seminar, and Innovative Nonwovens Conference (NETInc).  Learn more about PaperCon.

The working group reviewing TIP 0402-04 "Clad-steel plate use" has recommended withdrawal due to this information being available from other sources.

Also, is not much call, if any, for clad steel plate anymore. Pulp and paper mill vessels are now more likely to be built out of solid corrosion resistant alloy plate.

One document that contains this information is NACE SP0199 "Installation of Stainless Chromium-Nickel Steel and Nickel-Alloy Roll-Bonded and Explosion-Bonded Clad Plate in Air Pollution Control Equipment." The other, "Engineering with Clad Steel, 2nd Edition" is available online through the Nickel Institute.

If you have comments or have any objection to this withdrawal. please contact standards@tappi.org no later than April 15, 2014. If no objections are received, the TIP will be withdrawn after that date.

A proposal has been made by a Working Group to withdraw UM 821 "A non-destructive production tool to measure the general flute quality and damage of corrugated board using resonance frequency technology."

The reason for withdrawal is that the method does not adequately describe the apparatus or mechanism by which the measurement is made, and it does not currently match any techniques or instruments available.

If you have any objections to this withdrawal, please send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than April 11, 2014.

Standards Coming Up For Review

The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote.

Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review in 2014. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be distributed to the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for that particular Standard.

Any interested individuals who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot.

If you have joined the Standard Specific Interest Group for any Standard, you will receive a notice for ballot at the proper time with instructions for casting your vote and making your comments. If you wish to join the Standard Specific Interest Group for a particular Standard, please go to the Subject Categories for Standards  page or contact the Standards Department at TAPPI (standards@tappi.org), or phone +1-770-209-7276 or fax +1-770-446-6947).

Members for Working Groups of Useful Methods Needed

Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on February 27, 2014. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.

Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.

Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (April 30, 2014), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.

To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to to standards@tappi.org no later than Friday, April 25, 2014,, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their next meeting.
