Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.
The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.
Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.
T 702 "Rheological measurements for characterization of polyolefins: low-density polyethylene" (July 7, 2014)
T 1007 "Sample location for fiber glass mat sheets" (July 11, 2014)
T 840 "Testing adhesives used in glued lap joints of corrugated fiberboard containers" (July 25, 2014)
The Working Group reviewing TIP 0304-63 "Determination of moisture in containerboard using a moisture meter" has recommended that it be withdrawn. The reason for withdrawal is that the technology used in the TIP is not accurate and the list of suppliers should have been validated at the last publication. The Working Group has determined that moisture meters are not very accurate and the values are not reproducible.
If you have any objections to this withdrawal, please notify standards@tappi.org no later than July 11, 2014.

On June 14, 2014, Dave Carlson, Fibre Box Association (FBA) Technical Manager, celebrated fifty years in the corrugated industry. FBA would like to thank Dave for his dedication and contributions to the industry. FBA would like to congratulate Dave on this incredible milestone. and encourages all who have worked with Dave in some capacity to congratulate him on this important event. Please send all congratulatory emails to Dave at dcarlson@fibrebox.org.
Dave’s career began in 1964 as an Engineer and Production Manager at Container Corporation of America, where he remained until 1973. Dave subsequently worked at Hoerner Waldorf as an Engineer, Champion International as Manager of Quality Assurance, Stone Container Corporation as Manager of Quality Assurance and Smurfit-Stone as Director of Quality Assurance and Technical Director. The years from 1973 to 2007 are "continuous employment" with company names changed as the result of mergers and acquisitions. In June 2007, Dave joined FBA as Technical and Environmental Manager.
Technical accomplishments for Dave include the areas of bar code printing, statistical process control, Alternate Rule 41, and box compression theory. Dave has written guidelines used by TAPPI, the Fibre Box Association and the Uniform Code Council for direct printing of bar codes on corrugated. He was also instrumental in developing TAPPI’s SPC video training series and taught TAPPI’s SPC education course. He has published articles in several industry publications including Paperboard Packaging, Package Engineering, Flexo, and International Paperboard Industry.
A TAPPI member since 1978, Dave has been active in the Corrugated Packaging Division, as well as the Chicago Local Section. He has served as Chairman and continues to serve as a member on multiple TAPPI committees and councils (including chair or the Quality and Standards Management Committee), served on the TAPPI Board of Directors from 1997-2000, and was Technical Editor of TAPPI’s Corrugating International (CI) Magazine from 1995 to 2007. Joachim Distinguished Service Award in 2006, and the TAPPI Corrugated Packaging Division Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
Although there have been problems with the online voting system for TAPPI Standards for a while now, the good news is that TAPPI has launched a new system based on one developed by our vendor, the Kavi Corporation, called Kavi Workspace.
Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) members should have already received an email from admin@standards.tappi.org. This will be the sender for messages that the TAPPI Standards Manager creates in the system. The email provided login instructions, a user name, and a password. After an SSIG member logs in the first time, the password can be changed; users can use the same password they use for the main TAPPI website but should be aware that logging into one does not log one into the other (they are hosted on separate servers).
On the user’s home page appears general information about the system on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side are notices in case there are ballots to be voted on or new documents of interest. Whenever there is an item posted for ballot or any other documents or emails posted in any of the SSIGs that a user belongs to, an email notice will go out.
In the general information on the right are links to obtain help and a link to online training videos as well.
In the upper left-hand corner of the home page is a "Groups" dropdown box. The list in this dropdown box is divided between "My Groups" and "All Groups." "My Groups" are the active groups -- i.e., groups where some activity is currently going on (Work Item opened, ballots in progress, etc.) -- that the logged-in user is a member of. "All Groups" shows all SSIGs that are currently active -- including those the user belongs to (in bold). Click on any group to go to its home page. Those who are not a member of a particular group will see a link to request membership in that SSIG.
Among the active groups listed are the standards that will come up for review in 2014. These will be visible when the review begins. If you have not seen the list of standards up for review this year, go to http://www.tappi.org/Standards-TIPs/Review-Schedule-for-TAPPI-Standards.aspx.
If you are a member of any SSIGs, and you have not received the login instructions, please contact standards@tappi.org immediately As with the old system, you will receive emails alerting you whenever a ballot from one of your SSIGs is up for vote.
To join existing SSIGs that may not show up yet on the new site (because they are not currently active), you can still sign up for them at any time by visiting the Subject Categories page.
Plans are already underway for the 100th Anniversary of TAPPI, which will be observed during the 2015 PaperCon Conference in Atlanta, April 19-22.2015.
As part of the celebration, TAPPI and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have invited ISO Technical Committee TC 6 and its subcommittees and working groups to hold its 2015 meeting during the PaperCon week.
To keep up with the 100th Anniversary plans, there's a special website: http://www.tappi100years.org. On this site you can also sign up for the special newsletter for this event.
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
For details on these commonly-used acronyms in the development of TAPPI Standards and TIPs, please see the Standards Guidelines and the TIP Guidelines, or send your questions to standards@tappi.org.
