Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.
The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.
Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

The Community Classification Standards Board (CCSB) is researching the transportation characteristics related to the shipping of both paper towels and wrapping paper in accordance with the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) standard. NMFC is a standard used by the trucking industry that provides a comparison of commodities moving in commerce.
CCSB has designed a questionnaire to be completed by manufacturers and shippers of each product. The source of the information furnished will be identified only as "shipper," and no confidential information will be released. The CCSB would also welcome an opportunity to visit shipping facilities and observe shipments as they are presented to the carrier.
The CCSB would like the questionnaire on paper towels submitted no later than September 15, 2014, and the questionnaire on wrapping paper by September 22, 2014. If your company is a manufacturer or shipper of paper towels and/or wrapping paper, and you have not already received the questionnaire directly from CCSB, please contact standards@tappi.org, and a copy of the letter and questionnaire can be sent to you.
The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announces that the first seven international standards in the rapidly expanding industry of solid biofuels have been published. In addition, work has also begun on part 8 of the series.
The newly published documents are as follows: ISO 17225 Solid biofuels — Fuel specifications and classes — Part 1 General requirements; Part 2 Graded wood pellets; Part 3 Graded wood briquettes; Part 4 Graded wood chips; Part 5 Graded firewood; Part 6 Graded non-woody pellets; and Part 7 Graded non-woody briquettes. The new project, Part 8, will cover thermally treated and densified biomass fuels
ASABE is accredited by the American National Standards Institute as the administrator for the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to the ISO committee on solid biofuels, TC 238, which was established in 2007 in response to growing global trade in the subject commodities. Currently, there are over two dozen projects in development within ISO on solid biofuels. Individuals, companies, or organizations interested in joining the committee or wishing additional details regarding TC 238 may contact ASABE.
ASABE is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food, and biological systems. Further information on the Society can be obtained by contacting ASABE at (269) 429-0300, emailing hq@asabe.org or visiting www.asabe.org.
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
Plans are already underway for the 100th Anniversary of TAPPI, which will be observed during the 2015 PaperCon Conference in Atlanta, April 19-22.2015.
As part of the celebration, TAPPI and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have invited ISO Technical Committee TC 6 and its subcommittees and working groups to hold its 2015 meeting during the PaperCon week.
To keep up with the 100th Anniversary plans, there's a special website: http://www.tappi100years.org. On this site you can also sign up for the special newsletter for this event.
Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on August 5, 2014. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.
Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.
Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (November 4, 2014), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.
If you are working on a Standard that will be ready to go to the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) for final approval, please be aware that the SARG agenda must be posted on the web at least 50 days before their next meeting on November 4, 2014. This means that any standards that are ready for SARG must be submitted no later than September 8, 2014,, in order to be included in the Fall 2014 SARG agenda.
To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than Monday, November 3, 2014, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their next meeting.
For details on these commonly-used acronyms in the development of TAPPI Standards and TIPs, please see the Standards Guidelines and the TIP Guidelines, or send your questions to standards@tappi.org.
