If you want to register and pay the fee for the full conference in order to attend technical sessions, you may do that online as well or you can contact Member Connection as outlined above. Online, follow the instructions above, but when you get to the Contact Information Page, select PaperCon 2015 instead of committee meetings only.

Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.

These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.

Below are the committees which are in need of your support:

Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee

Optical Properties Committee

Physical Properties Committee

Tissue Properties Subcommittee

Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require.  Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.

For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.

Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference. The next meetings are being held in Atlanta, GA, April 20-21, 2015 during PaperCon 2015.

Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Charles Bohanan, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is seeking participants for a working group to revise the standard Permanence of Paper for Publications and Documents in Libraries and Archives (ANSI/NISO Z39.48-1992 (R2009)). This standard establishes criteria for coated and uncoated paper that will last several hundred years without significant deterioration under normal use and storage conditions in libraries and archives. It identifies the specific properties of such paper and specifies the tests required to demonstrate these properties.

"Since it was first issued in 1984, the Paper Permanence standard has been widely used to ensure that paper documents needed for archival or long-term retention were produced on paper that will last for hundreds of years or longer," states Betty Landesman, Head of Technical Services and Content Management at University of Baltimore, Langsdale Library, and Co-Chair of the NISO Content and Collection Development Topic Committee that has responsibility for this standard. "The paper permanence symbol defined by this standard is well-recognized as an indicator of compliance."

"In conducting the five year periodic review of this standard, last revised in 1992, it was determined that it should be updated to reflect changes in paper technology and testing," explains Marti Heyman, Executive Director, Metadata Standards and Services at Cengage Learning and Co-Chair of the NISO Content and Collection Development Topic Committee. "Specifically, the convened working group will be asked to look at issues of lignin, recycled content, and fillers; investigate further testing of how lingin affects permanence; and investigate methods to reveal compliance."

"For the revision working group, we are seeking individuals with experience in paper preservation needs; paper composition, fiber, and stability; and/or paper analysis and test methods," said Nettie Lagace, NISO Associate Director for Programs. "We are interested in having individuals from both the user community and paper producers."

Anyone interested in participating should contact NISO using the online contact form (www.niso.org/contact/) and indicate your areas of related knowledge or expertise. The current version of the Paper Permanence standard can be downloaded from the NISO website at: http://bit.ly/1De8vYP.

Plans are already underway for the 100th Anniversary of TAPPI, which will be observed during the 2015 PaperCon Conference in Atlanta, April 19-22.2015.

The TAPPI Centennial Celebration Gala promises to be an exciting evening celebrating TAPPI's past, present, and future. Mark your calendars and plan to attend this once-in-a-career evening on Monday, April 20, at the AmericasMart in Atlanta. This evening of cocktails and dinner, seeing old friends, making new acquaintances, and celebrating the incredible progress and future potential of our industry can't be missed.

As part of the celebration, TAPPI and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have invited ISO Technical Committee TC 6 and its subcommittees and working groups to hold its 2015 meeting during the PaperCon week.

TAPPI's Centennial Celebration includes a keep-sake book, to be published in April 2015. It spotlights TAPPI's rich history, the people, the organization, and the impact that members and innovations have made on the industry. Get a preview of these innovations, more information, insights, little-known-facts and history on the Centennial website. On this site you can also sign up for the special newsletter for this event.

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

Standards Coming Up For Review

The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote.

Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review in 2015. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be distributed to the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for that particular Standard.

Any interested individuals who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot.

If you have joined the Standard Specific Interest Group for any Standard, you will receive a notice for ballot at the proper time with instructions for casting your vote and making your comments. If you wish to join the Standard Specific Interest Group for a particular Standard, please go to the Subject Categories for Standards  page or contact the Standards Department at TAPPI (standards@tappi.org), or phone +1-770-209-7276 or fax +1-770-446-6947).
