The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.
Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.
T 600 "Analysis of formaldehyde in aqueous solutions and of free formaldehyde in resins" (July 15, 2015)
T 509 "Hydrogen ion concentration (pH) of paper extracts (cold extraction method)" (July 20, 2015)
T 435 "Hydrogen ion concentration (pH) of paper extracts (hot extraction method)" (July 24, 2015)
TIP 0602-03 "Calibration technique for the drum style chip thickness clarifier" has been under review since May 2012, and is now on the overdue list from the Quality and Standards Management Committee (QSMC).
The individual who agreed to chair the review of this TIP is no longer a TAPPI member. Membership is required to chair a TIP review.
A memo to the Pulp Manufacture Division has failed to produce another volunteer willing to review this TIP. Therefore, it will be placed on the October 2015 agenda of the Quality and Standards Management Committee (QSMC) for withdrawal.
Any TAPPI member who would like to see the TIP retained and who would like to volunteer to chair the review should contact standards@tappi.org before the October meeting of QSMC.
Fifteen recently published TAPPI Standards have been approved as American National Standards:
T 213 om-15 "Dirt in pulp - chart method"
T 259 om-15 "Species identification of nonwood plant fibers"
T 401 om-15 "Fiber analysis of paper and paperboard"
T 409 sp-15 "Machine direction of paper and paperboard"
T 454 om-15 "Turpentine test for voids in glassine and greaseproof papers"
T 546 om-15 "Machine-direction grammage variation measurement (gravimetric method)"
T 555 om-15 "Roughness of paper and paperboard (print-surf method)"
T 558 om-15 "Surface wettability and absorbency of sheeted materials using an automated contact angle tester"
T 563 om-15 "Equivalent black area (EBA) and count of visible dirt in pulp, paper and paperboard by image analysis"
T 573 sp-15 "Accelerated temperature aging of printing and writing paper by dry oven exposure apparatus"
T 650 om-15 "Solids content of black liquor"
T 1007 sp-15 "Sample location for fiber glass mat sheets"
T 1008 sp-15 "Test conditions for fiberglass mat test methods"
T 1012 om-15 "Moisture content of fiber glass mats"
T 1015 sp-15 "Fiber glass mat uniformity (visual defects)"
Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.
These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.
Below are the committees which are in need of your support:
Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee
Optical Properties Committee
Physical Properties Committee
Tissue Properties Subcommittee
Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require. Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.
For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.
Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference.
Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Charles Bohanan, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
A proposal has been made for a new Standard: "Specular Gloss at 20º -- Parallel Beam Method."
This method is for the measurement of the specular gloss of high-gloss papers at 20° (70° from the plane of the paper). It is suitable for high-gloss coated, cast-coated, lacquered, highly varnished or waxed papers, and high-gloss ink films.
A Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) must be formed for this proposal. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than July 15, 2015.
T 465 sp-10 "Static creasing of paper for water vapor transmission tests" was first balloted for its five-year review on November 25, 2014.
The first draft balloted resulted in dropping delinquent voting members which led to an imbalance of interest groups on the SSIG. After recruiting new members, Draft 2 was balloted, but that ballot did not receive the minimum percent return of over 50%.
So a Draft 3 was balloted. After tabulating that ballot, more members were dropped due to missing three ballots in a row. This leaves the SSIG with only 9 members – one short of the 10 required. So the Draft 3 ballot was invalid.
So we must have at least one new member on the SSIG in order to attempt a fourth ballot. If you are not already a member of the T 465 SSIG, please consider joining. Please send a message to standards@tappi.org by July 15, 2015. After that date, assuming we have the minimum 10 that we need, another ballot will be attempted.
T 556 "Bending resistance of paper and paperboard by single-point bending methods" was originally scheduled for regular five-year review on November 13, 2015.
An issue was raised regarding the sample placement, so an early review and revision has been proposed. After running an announcement in ANSI Standards Action, the first ballot for this early review will take place sometime after August 10, 2015.
If you would like to join the Standard-Specific Interest Group to participate in the balloting, please send a message to standards@tappi.org before August 10, 2015.
. . . you do not have to be a TAPPI member to join any of the Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs)? To join an SSIG for a specific Standard, go to the Subject Categories page, where you will find links to sign up for as many SSIGs as you like.
If you do not choose to join an SSIG, you can still request copies of any Standards up for ballot by sending a message to standards@tappi.org. After reviewing drafts, you may also send any comments to standards@tappi.org. The volunteer experts working on Standards are required to consider all comments received, but they are not required to accept comments from nonmembers of the SSIG. To ensure that your comments are addressed, then think about signing up for as many SSIGs as you like.
Once you have signed up, you will be given instruction son how to log into the TAPPI balloting system. You will then be notified by email whenever one of the Standards you have signed up for is ready for voting.
