Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.
The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.
Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.
T 610 sp-11 "Preparation of indicators and standard solutions" (July 31, 2015)
T 684 sp-11 "Gross heating value of black liquor" (August 3, 2015)
T 222 om-11 "Acid insoluble lignin in wood and pulp" (August 3, 2015)
T 1014 om-10 "Moisture sensitivity of fiber glass mats" (August 6, 2015)
T 266 om-11 "Determination of sodium, calcium, copper, iron, and manganese in pulp and paper by atomic absorption spectroscopy" (August 7, 2015)
T 413 om-11 "Ash in wood, pulp, paper and paperboard: combustion at 900 degrees C" (August 14, 2015)
T 233 cm-06 "Fiber length of pulp by classification" (August 24, 2015)
TIP 0602-03 "Calibration technique for the drum style chip thickness clarifier" has been under review since May 2012, and is now on the overdue list from the Quality and Standards Management Committee (QSMC).
The individual who agreed to chair the review of this TIP is no longer a TAPPI member. Membership is required to chair a TIP review.
A memo to the Pulp Manufacture Division has failed to produce another volunteer willing to review this TIP. Therefore, it will be placed on the October 2015 agenda of the Quality and Standards Management Committee (QSMC) for withdrawal.
Any TAPPI member who would like to see the TIP retained and who would like to volunteer to chair the review should contact standards@tappi.org before the October meeting of QSMC.
Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.
These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.
Below are the committees which are in need of your support:
Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee
Optical Properties Committee
Physical Properties Committee
Tissue Properties Subcommittee
Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require. Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.
For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.
Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference.
Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Charles Bohanan, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
A proposal has been made for a new Standard: "Specular Gloss at 20º -- Parallel Beam Method."
This method is for the measurement of the specular gloss of high-gloss papers at 20° (70° from the plane of the paper). It is suitable for high-gloss coated, cast-coated, lacquered, highly varnished or waxed papers, and high-gloss ink films.
A Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) must be formed for this proposal. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than August 14, 2015.
T 1009 om-11 "Basis weight of fiber glass mats" has been under regular review since July 2014. After going through three drafts, the most recent ballot was invalid because the Standards-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) became out of balance after dropping members who had missed three ballots in a row.
The SSIG now has over 50% suppliers of chemicals or raw materials. No interest group may have more than 50% in order to properly balance the group.
In order to continue balloting this standard, more members who are NOT suppliers of chemical or raw materials need to join the SSIG in order to achieve the proper balance.
If you are NOT a supplier of chemicals or raw materials, and you would like to join this SSIG to help keep this standard in the system, please contact standards@tappi.org before August 14, 2015. If the SSIG balance can be restored, the next ballot will be distributed sometime after that date.
T 800 cm-06 "Drum test for fiberboard shipping containers (revolving hexagonal drum)" was balloted for its ten-year review on May 5, 2015. After the ballot results were tabulated, several members were dropped due to missing three ballots in a row.
This left a shortage of members on the SSIG (the minimum required is 10). So more members will need to be added to the SSIG before another ballot can be done.
If you would like to join this SSIG and participate in the balloting, please send a message to standards@tappi.org before August 14, 2015.
T 556 "Bending resistance of paper and paperboard by single-point bending methods" was originally scheduled for regular five-year review on November 13, 2015.
An issue was raised regarding the sample placement, so an early review and revision has been proposed. After running an announcement in ANSI Standards Action, the first ballot for this early review will take place sometime after August 10, 2015.
If you would like to join the Standard-Specific Interest Group to participate in the balloting, please send a message to standards@tappi.org before August 10, 2015.
The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2015, 1:30 pm EASTERN time, at the CorrExpo Conference in Louisville, KY.. SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new or revised standard.
In order to act on any appeals from TAPPI members relevant to the standards up for approval, the SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation. The agenda will be posted on the SARG page no later than September 1, 2015. There will be links from the agenda items to the final drafts that are up for approval.
August 21, 2015,, is the deadline for any working group chairs who have standards that are ready for the final stage of approval to submit reports in order to be placed on the SARG agenda.
If you would like to participate in the SARG meeting by conference call, please send a message before October 20, 2015,, to standards@tappi.org.
