TIP 0420-13 "Guidelines for side-entering stock agitators" (Revision)
Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.
The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.

A proposal has been made for the review and reinstatement of withdrawn TIP 0416-02 "Definitions of black liquor recovery furnace availability."
The scope of this TIP is to provide guidance for report of black liquor recovery boiler availability. The coordinated use of suggested definitions would allow for consistent industry wide reporting of availability.
Any individuals who are interested in this TIP may join the Working Group and have an opportunity to review the TIP prior to its publication. If you would like to join the Working Group for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than September 18, 2015.
A proposal has been made for a new Technical Information Paper (TIP): "Green liquor density measurements."
The scope of this TIP is to discuss the importance of the density measurement of green liquor, from both a safety perspective as well as a mill economic perspective. The advantages and disadvantages will also be discussed along with different measurement techniques and good practices to ensure good operations of the measurements. In addition, new technology has been developed and will also be reviewed. Finally, the TIP will discuss the use of density and titratable alkali for dissolving tank control to mitigate the possibility of a smelt dissolving tank explosion while providing the highest economic value to the mill.
Any individuals who are interested in this TIP may join the Working Group and have an opportunity to review the TIP prior to its publication. If you would like to join the Working Group for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than September 21, 2015.
TIP 0602-03 "Calibration technique for the drum style chip thickness clarifier" has been under review since May 2012, and is now on the overdue list from the Quality and Standards Management Committee (QSMC).
The individual who agreed to chair the review of this TIP is no longer a TAPPI member. Membership is required to chair a TIP review.
A memo to the Pulp Manufacture Division has failed to produce another volunteer willing to review this TIP. Therefore, it will be placed on the October 2015 agenda of the Quality and Standards Management Committee (QSMC) for withdrawal.
Any TAPPI member who would like to see the TIP retained and who would like to volunteer to chair the review should contact standards@tappi.org before the October meeting of QSMC.
Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.
These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.
Below are the committees which are in need of your support:
Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee
Optical Properties Committee
Physical Properties Committee
Tissue Properties Subcommittee
Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require. Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.
For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.
Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference.
Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Charles Bohanan, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
An early review has been proposed for T 804 "Compression test of fiberboard shipping containers." The draft submitted proposes adding a new appendix to describe compressive load conditioning.
If you are not already a member of the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for T 804, you are invited to join in order to participate in this review. Please send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than September 15, 2015, so you can be added to the roster before a ballot goes out.
The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2015, 1:30 pm EASTERN time, at the CorrExpo Conference in Louisville, KY.. SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new or revised standard.
In order to act on any appeals from TAPPI members relevant to the standards up for approval, the SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation. The agenda will be posted on the SARG page no later than September 1, 2015. There will be links from the agenda items to the final drafts that are up for approval.
August 21, 2015, is the deadline for any working group chairs who have standards that are ready for the final stage of approval to submit reports in order to be placed on the SARG agenda.
If you would like to participate in the SARG meeting by conference call, please send a message before October 20, 2015, to standards@tappi.org.
Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on August 11, 2015. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.
Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.
Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (October 20, 2015), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.
If you are working on a Standard that will be ready to go to the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) for final approval, please be aware that the SARG agenda must be posted on the web at least 50 days before their next meeting on October 20, 2015. This means that any standards that are ready for SARG must be submitted no later than August 21, 2015, in order to be included in the Fall 2015 SARG agenda.
To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than Monday, October 19, 2015, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their next meeting.
The Standards, TIPs and Useful Methods are issued in March of each year, so the update pages currently show the documents that have been issued since May 2015.
Because revisions are continually made to both sets of documents, the Company License (or Individual License) for Standards and TIPs provides the best way to keep up with changes. Holders of the license always have on line the most current version of all documents. View the information on the Company License page or the Individual License page for details.
For details on these commonly-used acronyms in the development of TAPPI Standards and TIPs, please see the Standards Guidelines and the TIP Guidelines, or send your questions to standards@tappi.org.
