The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.
Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.
T 476 "Abrasion loss of paper and paperboard (Taber-type method)" (January 15, 2016)
T 578 "Accelerated light aging of printing and writing paper by xenon-arc exposure apparatus" (January 21, 2016)
T 412 "Moisture in pulp, paper, and paperboard" (January 23, 2016)
TAPPI has recently launched a revamped website. If you haven't seen it yet, now would be a good time to check it out! (www.tappi.org)
We are very excited to bring this new experience to you, so please feel free to send us feedback and tell us how you feel. We are aware that there will be some minor difficulties during this transition period, so please bear with us as you experience broken links or issues navigating the new site.
Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.
These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.
Below are the committees which are in need of your support:
Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee
Optical Properties Committee
Physical Properties Committee
Tissue Properties Subcommittee
Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require. Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.
For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.
Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference.
Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Charles Bohanan, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
One more member is need for T 602 cm-06 "Analysis of sulfuric acid" SSIG. The roster currently stands at nine members. Once we have ten members we can begin the ballot.
Three more SSIG members are required for T 438 cm-06 "Zinc and cadmium in paper" SSIG. If no progress is made on this ballot, then it will be considered for withdrawal at the next QSMC meeting.
If you have an interest in becoming a member of either of these SSIGs please contact standards@tappi.org.
...that the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is the final approval point for TAPPI Standards? The SARG, appointed by the Quality and Standrads Management Committee, is responsible for assuring that the regulations governing TAPPI Standards have been followed in the review and/or development of all TAPPI Standards.
Current activity relevant to SARG can be found on the SARG web page. The next SARG meeting will be during Papercon, on the week of May 16th. All TAPPI Standards that have gone through the balloting process since the last SARG meeting and are ready for final approval will be voted on at that time.
At least 50 days prior to the meeting, the SARG web page will be updated to show the full agenda of Standards being considered for approval, with links to the draft revisions. Any person who has an interest in any of the Standards has the right to view the drafts and submit comments for SARG to consider before approving the final draft.
The SARG meeting is open to any interested parties, either by attending in person or participating by conference call. To obtain the call-in number for the next meeting, send an email prior to May 10, 2016 to standards@tappi.org.
