General Announcements

New Standards balloting system coming soon

TAPPI will soon have a new balloting system for Standards. An agreement with ASTM International to use its SpecBuilder platform has just been signed and the two organizations are working to make the new balloting system available to SSIG members soon. The expectation is that by the end of May the new system will be fully implemented. The TAPPI Standards Department will keep SSIG members up-to-date when the new system goes live and will provide all necessary support to assist all voters with the transition.

New section in STAR Newsletter: U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 6

STAR Newsletter opens in this issue a new section, dedicated to the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for ISO Technical Committee 6 (U.S. TAG to ISO/TC6). This Technical Committee is called "Paper, board and pulps" and its scope is: "Standardization in the field of paper, board pulps cellulosic nanomaterials, and lignins, including terminology, sampling procedures, test methods, product and quality specifications, and the establishment and maintenance of appropriate calibration systems. This includes all types of paper, pulps and board as well as products thereof containing any portion of recycled material or material intended for recycling." ISO TC 6 and its subcommittees have published 188 ISO Standards and has 29 under development. 28 countries actively participate in the review and development of ISO TC 6 Standards while other 32 countries are observer members. ANSI (American National Standards Institute) is the member body that represents the United Stantes before ISO and TAPPI has the responsibility of administration, funding and operation of the U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 6, activities performed by the TAPPI Standards Department. The U.S. TAG currently counts with 27 members and some of them are also TAPPI Members. The TAG Chair is Todd Popson, the Vice-Chair is Dave Loebker and the TAG Administrator is Priscila Briggs.

If you have any questions about ISO/TC 6, please write to isotc6@tappi.org.

Best regards,

Priscila Briggs
Standards Manager

Members for Working Groups of Useful Methods Needed

Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) respectively on March 9, 2020 and March 6, 2020. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.

Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.

Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (April 28, 2020), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.

To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than April 20, 2020, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their April 28th meeting.
