TIPs Guidelines Revised
We are happy to announce that the TIPs (Technical Information Papers) Guidelines have been revised. The revision was approved at the 2019 Fall meeting of Q&SMC and the final draft has recently been published on the TAPPI website.
Some of the main changes from the previous version are listed below:
• Creation of the role of TIP Coordinator
• Adoption of the role title “Working Group Chair” instead of “Working Group Chairman” (WGC).
• The respective Division or Committee Chair or TIP Coordinator will be now responsible for recruiting the Working Group Chair, and for ensuring that the review schedule is met. All these tasks were previously performed by the TAPPI Standards Department.
• The Division Chair or Committee Chair is the individual responsible for TIPs within the TAPPI Division and is required to notify the Standards Manager of the name(s) of any TIP Coordinators within the Division or Committee.
• The text inside the Caution box was updated to show “Safety Data Sheets” instead of the old term “Material Safety Data Sheets”.
• The Q&SMC (Quality and Standards Management Committee) approved a 7-year review cycle for the TIPs, Standards and Useful Methods Guidelines.
A special thank you to the Quality and Standards Management Committee Chair, Christopher Czyryca, and to the Papermakers Technology and Operations Committee Chair, Paula Hajakian, for their direct involvement in the review of these guidelines.
In addition, thank you to all the TAPPI members who also dedicated their time and knowledge to review this document.

Submit your ideas for new P&PQ technical content
The Process and Product Quality Division is looking for opportunities to increase the value of participation in P&PQ Division activities, and for the readers of the STAR Newsletter. One avenue is to increase the learning and the “keeping up-to-date” opportunities for existing stake holders in the measurement and control of product quality. We are asking your input regarding potential topics about quality systems, the latest product quality testing technology and new methods that you think are of benefit to our industry.
We are hoping to develop these ideas into short seminars and conference session, or workshops. Please send us your ideas to training@tappi.org.
Propose a New Standard or Technical Information Paper (TIP)
Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a Standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for aStandard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion.
If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org.
From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.
