General Announcements

Standards backlog clean up


The TAPPI Standards team started on July 13th an intense and focused work to update the backlog on the review of Standards. Until September 18, 2020, the team is going to make an effort to update all the late items that have any actions pending. 

Results from the backlog work are already showing: 30 ballots were opened or scheduled since last month and 12 Standards had their reviews finalized and were prepared to be presented at SARG for final approval. Although many SSIGs are still in need of members, the Standards team has got to find volunteers to fulfill many SSIGs with less than 10 members. The TAPPI Standards Department is working tirelessly to update all the remaining reviews and is positive that even better results are going to be presented by the end of this focused work on the backlog. 

Thank you to all the volunteers that are helping the Standards Department update this backlog!

 

Ballots on the new balloting system began

The first official ballot for TAPPI Standards was opened in the new balloting system: TAPPI/ASTM SpecBuilder: The five-year review of T 259 om-16 Species identification of nonwood plant fibers had its first ballot opened in SpecBuilder on August 7th and will close on September 21, 2020. The TAPPI Standards Department will soon open other ballots in the new system. The SSIG members will receive a message from us when the ballot is about to be opened with instructions on how to log in to the new platform.

ISO ballots for the U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 6 are already been opened through SpecBuilder. 

If you have any issues on trying to vote on a ballot on any of the balloting systems (TAPPI Sandbox or TAPPI/ASTM SpecBuilder), please communicate it immediately to the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org.

Announcement of SARG Meeting

 

The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2020, 1:30 – 2:00 pm (EASTERN time), online only. SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new, reaffirmed or revised standard.

In order to act on any appeals from TAPPI members relevant to the standards up for approval, the SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation. The agenda has been posted on the SARG page. There are links from the agenda items to the final drafts that are up for approval.

Members for Working Groups of Useful Methods Needed

 

The report outlining the overdue reviews for TIPs was sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on August 25, 2020. A copy of the report was also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairs for these overdue reviews as well as to the TIP Coordinators and Chairs of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.

Anyone who did not receive the overdue report, but who has an interest may obtain a copy by requesting it from tip@tappi.org.

Working Group Chairs: This report was sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the TIPs Guidelines, withdraw any TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (October 7, 2020), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.

To provide updates regarding this report, send a message to tip@tappi.org no later than September 22, 2020, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their October 7th meeting.

U.S. TAG to ISO TC 6

 

Get to know Mr. Robert Moon, PhD.

Dr. Moon is an expert in processing-structure-property relationships as they apply in various aspects of cellulose nanomaterial (CNMs) research. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the area of CNMs, where he has over 40 SCI ranked journal publications, 2 critical review, 2 patents, an editor of 1 book, has given 5 keynote/plenary and 50+ invited talks at conferences, universities and research centers worldwide on CNMs. Dr Moon is also active in the broader international research efforts of CNMs, where he is the Chair of the Technical Association for Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) Nanotechnology Division, a Convenor of ISO TC 6/TG 1 Cellulosic Nanomaterials for ISO standards development for CNMs, active many other workshops and roadmap development in the area of renewable materials.

His PhD is from Purdue University (Boiler up!), and he is currently a Materials Research Engineer – USDA Forest Service.

Do you have just a general idea for a Standard? Or are you further along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a Standard or TIP, email us at standards@tappi.org or tip@tappi.org. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

 ... that to participate in the balloting process for TAPPI Standards you must sign up for the Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs)? Drafts are available for anyone to review, but to vote and comment you must be a member of the SSIG. Each Standard has its own SSIG – so you have to sign up for each Standard that you have an interest in.
