General Announcements

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

The following TAPPI Standards have been approved as American National Standards by the ANSI Board of Standards Review:

T 271 om-12 Fiber length of pulp and paper by automated optical analyzer using polarized light

T 512 sp-12 Creasing of flexible packaging material paper specimens for testing

T 834 om-12 Determination of containerboard roll hardness

SSIG Members Needed

A proposal was announced in January 2013 for a new standard test method: "Starch in paper or paperboard." This new standard would replace the withdrawn standards T 531 "Starch consumption in corrugated board (enzymatic/gravimetric method)" and T 532 "Starch consumption in corrugated board (enzymatic/colorimetric method)."

Although enough responses were received to obtain the minimum required for an SSIG, the balance is not acceptable in accordance with the guidelines we must follow from ANSI. No more than 50% of the SSIG members may come from one particular interest group.

Currently more than half of this new SSIG are producers. We need SSIG members in non-producer categories to join in order to achieve the proper balance.

The scope of the method is: This standard test method provides the procedure for the analysis of starch content in paper or paperboard, either as an internal or sizing additive or as a component of starch adhesive in lamination or corrugated board.

Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. To join, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org or by fax at +1-770-446-6947 no later than April 17, 2013.

Standards Coming Up For Review

The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote.

Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review in 2013. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be posted for review by TAPPI members in the Members Only section of the TAPPI website. On that date, you may go to the home page (www.tappi.org), log on with your member ID and password, place your cursor over "Membership," and select "My TAPPI" from the dropdown box. When your personal page appears, click on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left-hand side. You do not have to be a member of the Standard Specific Interest Group to comment on the draft.

Nonmembers of TAPPI who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot. Nonmembers cannot access the drafts online, but they will be sent copies by email upon request after receiving the notice of ballot by email.

If you have joined the Standard Specific Interest Group for any Standard, you will receive a notice for ballot at the proper time with instructions for casting your vote and making your comments. If you wish to join the Standard Specific Interest Group for a particular Standard, please go to the Subject Categories for Standards page or contact the Standards Department at TAPPI (standards@tappi.org ), or phone +1-770-209-7276 or fax +1-770-446-6947).

Announcement of SARG Meeting

The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, 2013, 1:30 pm EASTERN time, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta, GA (the site of the 2013 PaperCon Conference).

SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new or revised standard. In order to act on any appeals from TAPPI members relevant to the standards up for approval, the SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation. The agenda was posted on the SARG page at least 50 days prior to the meeting, in accordance with TAPPI’s guidelines. There are links from the agenda items to the final drafts that are up for approval. If you would like to participate in the SARG meeting by conference call, please send a message before April 25, 2013, to standards@tappi.org.

Members for Working Groups of Useful Methods Needed

Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on February 22, 2013. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI. Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.

Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (April 30, 2013),

To provide updates regarding these reports, send a message to to standards@tappi.org no later than Thursday, April 25, 2013, in order to be able to provide this information to Q&SMC at their next meeting.

Did You Know

... that many of the TAPPI Standard Test Methods require the use of reference materials for calibrating the instruments used in testing? As an example, optical properties tests (brightness, whiteness, and other tests of appearance properties) are tests where the need for specialized reference materials is widely recognized. The use of certified reference measures of mass, distance, time, and volume are also widely used within the paper industry measurement organizations for verifying calibration of basis weight balances, cutting dies and templates, tensile testers, to name only a few of the more obvious examples.

As assistance to those needing a source of reference calibrating materials or equipment, TAPPI maintains a Reference Materials List which is described in TAPPI Standard Practice T 1211. Suppliers of standard materials for TAPPI Standard Test Methods that would like to be placed on the Reference Materials List are encouraged to consult this Standard Practice for guidance on the steps to take in order to be listed. In addition to reading the requirements of TAPPI T 1211, interested parties are encouraged to contact Charles Bohanan, TAPPI Director of Standards and Awards, at standards@tappi.org to discuss specific needs of the Reference Materials program or assistance in becoming a listed material source.
