So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.
TAPPI Standards in Ballot
The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. Send a message to standards@tappi.org if you want to request a copy of draft in ballot.
T 464 om-12 "Water vapor transmission rate of paper and paperboard at high temperature and humidity" (March 25, 2017)
T 444 om-12 "Silver tarnishing by paper and paperboard" (March 25, 2017) General Announcements
The SSIG for T 818 and T 819 have approved these methods for withdrawal. Having been classical method for over 20 years, along with limited use of the equipment, these methods are on the way out.
If you have use of these methods, any questions, or concerns, please contact standards@tappi.org for more information. Task Group 1 (TG 1, Cellulosic nanomaterials) is an advisory group within ISO/TC 6 (Paper, board and pulps) with the mandate of determining which standards to develop for cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) and advising as to which working group within TC 6 should develop them. Our goal is to publish standard methods suitable for use with CNMs. Despite consisting mainly of cellulose (similarly to pulps), CNMs have very different forms, particle sizes, surface areas and degrees of crystallinity, and may contain chemical modifications, all of which can change the sample preparation and measurement techniques needed to characterize them.
As a first step in this work, we are adapting the below International Standard Method for use with cellulose nanomaterials:
For each of these methods, a round robin interlaboratory comparison (ILC) study must be performed in order to obtain the reproducibility statistics which are a requirement in International Standard Methods.
An ILC is best done with the participation of as many laboratories as possible. According to TAPPI T 1200 sp-14 "Interlaboratory evaluation of test methods to determine TAPPI repeatability and reproducibility," it is "highly desirable" that a minimum of 8 laboratories participate, and the data absolutely cannot be based on results from fewer than 5 laboratories. As you can see, your participation is very important to us!
Please note:The acid-soluble metals protocol requires a muffle furnace for dry ashing, a microwave for wet digestion (optional), and an ICP-OES system for metals detection
If you agree to participate, the samples (4 different cellulose nanomaterials) would be sent to you along with the measurement protocol(s), and the results expected within a two-month period. The ILCs would likely be initiated during Q2 (end of April to mid-May) of this year.
The identity of the ILC participants will remain strictly confidential, and all participants will receive the complete results of the ILC. Also, all of the samples will be unknowns; the study is for method development and statistics purposes only.
Please let Stephanie Beck know if you are willing to participate in the acid-soluble metals study, or the ash determination study, or both, by March 10, 2017. Any suggestions for other laboratories to contact would also be highly appreciated.

Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers. These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them. Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee Tissue Properties Subcommittee Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require. Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees. For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today. Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference. Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document. SSIG Members Needed
All Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIG) require a minimum of 10 members in order to ballot and vote on a draft of a method.
T 438 cm-06 "Zinc and cadmium in paper" requires two more SSIG members for ballot. T 504 "Glue in paper (qualitative & quantitative determination)" requires one more member in order to ballot. Standards Ready for Final Approval at SARG
