Paper International SA (PAINSA), Guatemala, has invested $40 million, enabling it to increase its tissue production to 42,000 metric tpy. The company’s new Recard, Italy, supplied tissue line started up in October at the mill in Rio Hondo, Zacapa. With the new system, 13,000 metric tons of tissue paper will no longer be imported from Asia to Guatemala each year.
The mill now has the ability to produce all of its raw material supply. Of the 22,000 metric tons that it currently produces with the new line, 50% is for local consumption. The rest is exported to Central America, according to Eduardo Font, GM of PAINSA.
Font added that "market coverage will increase from 21% to 30% at the regional level. The company is also conducting pre-feasibility studies to install a plant generating electricity using solar power in the next year.
