TAPPI has awarded the inaugural Tissue Lifetime Achievement Award and Nalco Water Honorarium to the late Sam Archer (photo right), formerly of Kimberly-Clark and Nalco. The award recognizes an individual whose achievements in management, technology, or marketing have resulted in preeminent benefit to the world’s tissue industry.
Sam’s commitment to learning about tissue making and his enthusiasm for sharing that knowledge were largely responsible for the growth of TAPPI’s Yankee Dryer Safety and Reliability Committee. Sam not only shared his knowledge and skills with TAPPI members, he also was a teacher to machine operators and anyone else in the mills he visited who had an interest in improving tissue making.
The award was presented to Sam’s wife Michelle (photo below) and his daughters Leslie Monroe and Sasha Dillard on May 17 at the PaperCon Awards Dinner in Cincinnati, Ohio. During her acceptance speech, Michelle summed up Sam’s contribution: "Sam lived his life with a fierce sense of authenticity, passion, and competitiveness, giving it his all and reaching for the best in everything he did. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he showed the world how to fight with that same fierce passion, instilling a sense of hope and inspiration to everyone who knew him."
