Supplied by Valmet, the unit is dubbed TM 8. It has a trim width of 5.6 m and a design speed of 2,000 m/min. An identical machine, TM 7, came on stream at the same site in late November. The move will boost its total tissue paper capacity to 390,000 tonnes/yr.
Already a leading recycled containerboard producer in China, Lee & Man diversified into the tissue segment in 2014 with the commissioning of two 15,000-tonne/yr Kawanoe Zoki TMs at the Chongqing mill.
Its expansions in this sector have accelerated since. Two 60,000-tonne/yr tissue units came online at the same plant last year, one from Voith and the other from Valmet.TM 8 was the fourth machine of its kind to commence production at the Chongqing site in 2016.
The Hong Kong-listed company is also adding tissue capacity at other existing mills. It has ordered four 60,000-tonne/yr TMs for its Hongmei plant in Guangdong province, two from Valmet and two from Voith. The latter has also been signed up to provide a pair of 60,000-tonne/yr TMs for the Jiujiang mill in Jiangxi province. These six units are scheduled to be commissioned in 2017.
If it stays on track with these plans, Lee & Man, despite being a latecomer to the tissue industry, will surpass many of its competitors to become the fourth largest tissue producer in China by the end of 2017.
