Sweden's Södra has decided to increase its price for northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp in Europe to $860/tonne for April deliveries.
The firm said the main driver behind the decision was the volume of pulp on the market, and a situation in which even small changes in pulp supply can affect the market.
"At the moment, we are seeing a tight supply situation with planned maintenance shutdowns compounded by unplanned shutdowns at several mills, for a variety of reasons. We have not seen this level of tightening in the market for many years," said Södra’ VP marketing and sales Magnus Björkman.
Södra is now the second firm to have announced a price increase for NBSK in Europe to $860/tonne in Europe. Finland’s Metsӓ Fibre announced a price increase to that level with immediate effect earlier in March.
