Workers at Italy’s Cartiere Carrara converting facility in Carraia went on strike for the fourth time in late December, downing tools for one hour as negotiations between the company and trade unions over a possible pay rise ground to a halt.
According to the CGIL-SLC trade union’s local representative Fabio Graziani, the company initially asked the unions to accept stable wages for three years, and later proposed a small increase. “The firm’s proposal is clearly lower than what we are currently agreeing with other companies in the [paper] sector,” Graziani told RISI. He added: “The strikes will continue. Workers have given us a mandate to strike for a total of 16 hours, so we have 12 hours left. We will continue with one-hour strikes, in order to give the company the possibility to think about our requests.”
The firm’s Carraia plant employs almost 200 workers.
