Italy’s Sofidel stopped production at its Valfegana mill near Lucca on March 25 and applied for a nine-week “cassa integrazione” (CIGO in Italian) procedure, which involves government participation in paying wages, because of the coronavirus crisis, the Italian trade unions Slc-Cgil, Fistel and Ugl Chimici announced.
According to the unions, the mill’s management wanted to modify the workers’ shifts by imposing three consecutive working days instead of two, in order to better manage a possible lack of personnel due to the coronavirus. Following the unions’ rejection of that step, the firm decided to stop production and apply for the CIGO.
“We think that the behavior of one of our region’s biggest multi-national firms is unacceptable and incomprehensible. There are enough workers to keep the Valfegana mill running as it is, and according to the firm, there is market demand and safety measures are in place,” the trade unions said.
Sofidel was not available for immediate comment.
The company’s Valfegana mill produces 18,000 mtpy of tissue paper.
