Gambini, a Lucca-based company that is a leader in the construction of tissue paper converting machinery, has closed a contract with WEPA, the German hygiene paper producer.

“With this sale, we almost made ourselves a birthday present,” explains Giovanni Gambini, president of Gambini, “since this order, which is the 150th complete line sold in our history, happens precisely in the 150th year from our foundation, an anniversary whose celebration is unfortunately being postponed to 2021, due to Covid-19.

“During the lockdown, we were able to work almost normally, although with all the necessary precautions,” continues Gambini. “But as soon as it was possible to cross the national borders, we immediately took a plane and flew to Germany, bringing home this great result. WEPA was already an important customer of ours: and when customers sign a repeat order, that's a double satisfaction!”

“We want to return to moving at our usual pace,” adds Carlo Berti, sales director and the man responsible for this achievement. “Our enthusiasm is nourished by internationalization, though we are committed to remaining very firm in Lucca, with our mind and heart. This order is important at a symbolic level, as well, since it marks a restart after the health and social disaster caused by the coronavirus: a new beginning, even if we have been working since 1870 as if it was day one.”

This new WEPA line, which will be installed in the Polish plant of Piechowice, is designed to produce away-from-home tissue rolls, thanks to its flexibility and speed (it winds up to 600 m/min). Its flagship will be the TouchMax, the embosser designed by Gambini which has now become a reference for the whole tissue paper converting industry.

WEPA is one of the largest European paper-making companies, employing 3,800 people in its 13 sites – located in 6 countries – and with a total turnover of Euro 1.3 billion. In Italy, two of its three factories are located right in the Lucca paper district.
