On May 20, 2021, Metsä Tissue organized a virtual public event on the expansion plans of the Mariestad plant in Sweden. The event was attended by about 200 participants, and Jani Sillanpää, president and CEO of Metsä Tissue AB, Esa Paavolainen, project director, and Stefan Montarius, plant manager of Mariestad, presented the project.
Jani Sillanpää opened the opportunity by backgrounding the expansion project of the Mariestad plant. “High-quality virgin fiber papers and their production close to the market are a key part of our corporate strategy. In addition to the growing demand for high-quality tissue paper, we are also focusing on the utilization of virgin fiber because the availability and quality of recycled fiber is constantly deteriorating. We believe that investing in the production of high-quality virgin tissue papers is the most sustainable solution for the future, ”said Jani Sillanpää before the presentation of the next topic and Esa Paavolainen.
Project manager Esa Paavolainen gave a brief overview of the investment project:
- The factory plans to manufacture products from Scandinavia's leading tissue brands, Lambi, Serla and Katrin
- The planned investment is approximately SEK 2.5 billion
- The investment would double the mill's annual tissue production capacity from 70,000 tonnes to 145,000 tonnes
- The investment would create about 50-100 new permanent jobs
In addition, Paavolainen gave an overview of the project's recent events, such as the progress of the design of the extension parts, technical processes and the environmental permit process. Paavolainen stated that a final environmental permit decision is expected at the beginning of 2022 and at the same time emphasized the scope and significance of the project.
“We are very proud of this project, which would mean a significant investment in Mariestad, and would also be one of the largest investment projects in the history of Metsä Tissue. With the investment, we would be able to create new jobs, develop future tissue technology that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and better meet the demand for high-quality tissue products,” said Esa Paavolainen.
