Two Timely Yankee Dryer Safety and Reliability Topics Highlight TAPPI’s YDSR Committee Spring Meeting Tech Talks

When it comes to Yankee Dryers, safety and reliability are two words every tissue engineer or technician should focus on.

They are also key reasons why TAPPI’s Tissue Division formed its Yankee Dryer Safety and Reliability Committee (YDSRC). Meeting twice each year, YDSRC’s goal is to expand knowledge, and provide the necessary tools to implement reliable operating and maintenance practices, which improve safety and positively impact drying system performance.

As part of its commitment to the global tissue industry, YDSRC has announced that for the first time ever it is opening its Spring Meeting Tech Talks to non-Committee members. Tech Talks is a non-commercial platform consisting of presentations focused solely on technical aspects and practical applications of Yankee Dryer operations.

“The goal of our Tech Talks feature is to provide end users with best practices that help ensure they are not putting their assets, or employees, at risk,” said Co-Chairs Nicolas Genske and Dan Ludden in making the announcement. Genske is Boiler/Dryer Compliance Manager for Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Ludden is Technical Service Manager for Toscotec North America. “The more information we can get out there, the more we can help prevent accidents. And, by helping to make Yankee Dryer operations safer, we are ultimately benefitting the industry as a whole.”

This year’s YDSRC Spring Meeting is being held in conjunction with the Tissue Track at TAPPICon in Charlotte, N.C. The Tech Talks will take place Wednesday, May 4, 2022 from 9:30 am – noon (including a half-hour break between 10:30 and 11:00). The two focused topics for this year are Pressure Roll Loading and Heat Transfer and Condensing with Straws/Setting. Each presentation will be followed by question and answer sessions.

“No one should take the safety of these vessels for granted,” the YDSRC Co-Chairs noted. “Most are controlled quite well, but the risk is always there. With a new generation of engineers and technicians filling the workforce and also because even seasoned professionals can use a refresher when it comes to safe operations, Tech Talks provide the valuable information needed to implement practical applications back in the real world.”
