Cascades Tissue Group, Kingsey Falls, Que., Canada, North America's fourth largest producer of tissue paper, reports that its Lachute, Que., mill has attained the highest level of RECYC-QUEBEC "ICI ON RECYCLE!" certification for its waste management. The various measures implemented at Lachute have resulted in the recovery of 88.9% of waste generated by the mill, notably in partnership with the regional agricultural sector.
"By way of various industrial ecology projects, the quantity of waste destined for disposal in landfills will gradually diminish, and eventually, we hope, will be completely eliminated" said Suzanne Blanchet, president and CEO of Cascades Tissue Group.
Cascades Tissue Group in Lachute produces a wide range of tissue products (paper hand towels, bathroom tissue, antibacterial hand towel, etc.) for the institutional, commercial, and industrial sectors. Its business plan is firmly oriented towards continually improving its environmental performance, a direction confirmed with its 2009 mill expansion, currently in the process of becoming the first of its kind to hold a LEED-NC certification in Canada.
RECYC-QUEBEC promotes responsible management of residual through its "ICI ON RECYCLE!" Program to recognize industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) establishments that meet the goals of the program. The Performance level recognizes establishments that have achieved outstanding results in reclaiming waste they generated by implementing reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery measures, as proposed in the 1998-2008 Quebec Residual Materials Management Policy. Establishments must also have held awareness-raising and information activities on waste management in their organization.
