TAPPI held its semi-annual Yankee Dryer Safety and Reliability Committee (YDSRC) meeting prior to Tissue World Americas in Miami on March 19. An excellent turnout of yankee owner/users and supplier partners shared information on the safe and efficient operation of yankee dryers. Some of the technical issues discussed were:
- Basic vibration technology as it relates to creping blade chatter (SKF presentation)
- Process driven chatter and how to prevent it (Nalco)
- Creping blade friction – basic concepts (BTG).
The YDSRC subcommittees reported on several projects that will benefit the yankee users:
- Online chatter database–-tools such as a cause and effect diagram and inspection are being posted for TAPPI members to use
- Cast Iron yankee inspections-–a comprehensive TAPPI TIP is almost ready for publication that will include recommended inspections, frequencies, and who should do it (a basic "how to" guide is also included)
- Steel yankee inspections-–a TAPPI TIP will also be published highlighting the unique aspects of inspecting steel yankees
- Yankee hood inspections-–a TAPPI TIP is also in the works for proper hood inspections.
Finally, the committee reviewed conditions surrounding a recent cast iron yankee explosion in China. They maintain a database capturing the facts on more than 80% of the known global failures.
