Canadian-based tissue and paper producer Cascades has won the "Top Green Supplier," "Intellichoix" and "'Energia" awards in the field of technological innovation. To support its green image, Cascades says it decided to preferably work with suppliers that adopt the same philosophy and pay special importance to sustainability. As part of this initiative, Alain Lemaire, president of Cascades, recently presented Voith Paper, Germany, the company's first "Sustainable Development Supplier Award 2009."
To evaluate suppliers, the Global Reporting Initiative, an international network for establishing sustainability standards in companies and organizations, was used for the supplier award. Questions covered the categories of product characteristics, environment, social and working conditions, economy, and transparency and reporting. Louise Fillion, Cascades purchasing manager, noted that Voith Paper's technology is "a key element that helps us lower our operating costs by extending the life of fabrics and related equipment."
