Damapel Com. e Distr. de Papéis Ltda., located in the city of Guarulhos, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been operating a Hergen Paper Machinery ribbed steel yankee cylinder for the past three months. Designed for a working speed up to 1,500 m/min and a maximum working pressure of 10.5 bars, with a maximum nip load of 120 kN/m, the dryer has steel heads bolted to its shell, resulting in a harmonic assembly with high rigidity and dimensional stability.
The paper machine that received the new yankee cylinder is a Crescent Former type, also manufactured by Hergen, with a paper width of 2,880 mm. Its drying system was upgraded to allow the machine to operate at a speed of 1,300 m/min.
The new dryer reportedly is providing the mill high operating security and dryness efficiency. It also is providing significant energy saving compared with traditional cast iron Yankees. Its shell, manufactured of high mechanical resistant steel plates, received a metal coating applied by an Arc Spray process, resulting in a surface with high hardness and final roundness controlled to suite the creping conditions.
