SCA, Sweden, reports that its Hygiene Products group and Toscotec, Italy, have started up rebuilt tissue machine PM 3 at Mannheim, Germany, on schedule. PM 3 is a 1971 Voith suction breast roll machine with a grooved, 5,000-mm-dia yankee dryer. The machine has a paper trim width at the reel of 5,200 mm and had a maximum running speed before the rebuild of 1,400 m/min, with a limitation on production of low basis weights.
The rebuild goal was mainly focused on increasing machine speed up to 2,000 m/min while maintaining the same trim width and improving paper quality, making softer products, and improving runnability and maintenance. The stock preparation system and the machine were upgraded to allow the production of products with different furnishes.
The Toscotec scope of supply included an AHEAD 2.0 L crescent former with a multi-layered headbox (TT Headbox ML – T) featuring consistency profiling, a new felt run design, upgrade of the existing two-press configuration, new yankee dryer doctoring, tail threading system, full width turn up, and a TT Reel H. Toscotec also rebuilt the stock preparation plant, new water system, complete new approach flow system for double layers, shaft pulling and core handling system, steam and condensate system for energy savings, and the electrification and control system.
The project was managed on a turn key basis by Toscotec, which also provided all engineering and erection services. With the rebuild, PM 3 at Mannheim will be one of the most modern conventional machines in Europe, featuring technology that will allow the mill to reduce energy and fiber consumption, while producing high quality soft tissue.
