The APCO 2021 Call for Speakers closes TODAY! If you are interested in sharing your expertise and insights at the conference, taking place August 15-18, 2021, in San Antonio, submit your proposal before the end of the day.

Beginning today, December 18, APCO is accepting comments for the candidate American National Standards (ANS) Crisis Intervention Techniques and Call Handling Procedures for Public Safety Telecommunicators. This standard will identify training requirements for handling calls involving emotionally distressed individuals. The public may review and comment on this candidate standard from December 18, 2020, through February 1, 2021.

APCO encourages members to review the following information from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This ongoing incident could have far reaching impact and vigilance is the best approach. Please feel free to share this with your vendors and IT providers.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is aware of active exploitation of a vulnerability in SolarWinds Orion Platform software versions 2019.4 through 2020.2.1, which the company released between March and June 2020. As a result, CISA issued Emergency Directive 21-01 and current activity alert "Active Exploitation of SolarWinds Software."

Impacted organizations should read the SolarWinds and FireEye advisories for more information and FireEye’s GitHub page for detection countermeasures:

  2. FireEye Advisory: Highly Evasive Attacker Leverages SolarWinds Supply Chain to Compromise Multiple Global Victims With SUNBURST Backdoor

Please refer any questions, feedback or incidents related to this product to CISA at Central@cisa.gov or (888) 282-0870.

APCO recently launched RETAINS® Toolkit 3.0 that provides agencies with a suite of staffing and retention tools. Based on updated research, new data and a focus on what ECCs need, APCO released two products to assist agencies in achieving maximum results in staffing, retention and employee satisfaction:

  • The RETAINS Toolkit 3.0, which provides agencies with a platform to complete a comprehensive review of their ECC and provides one report generation for each report type in the toolkit.
  • A new report titled "Staffing and Retention in Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs): A Supplemental Study" based on a study conducted by George Mason University (GMU) on behalf of APCO. The study takes up many of the issues addressed in previous studies and considers two more recent trends in ECC operations: use and awareness of new technologies and virtual and physical consolidation of ECCs.
